A gas of strongly interacting spinless p-orbital fermionic atoms in 2D optical lattices is proposed and studied. Several interesting new features are found. In the Mott limit on a square lattice, the gas is found to be described effectively by an orbital exchange Hamiltonian equivalent to a pseudospin-1/2 XXZ model. For a triangular, honeycomb, or Kagome lattice, the orbital exchange is geometrically frustrated and described by a new quantum 120 degree model. We determine the orbital ordering on the Kagome lattice, and show how orbital wave fluctuations select ground states via the order by disorder mechanism for the honeycomb lattice. We discuss experimental signatures of various orbital ordering.

Motivated by experimental and theoretical interest in realizing multipolar orders in $d$-orbital materials, we discuss the quantum magnetism of $J!=!2$ ions which can be realized in spin-orbit coupled oxides with $5d^2$ transition metal ions. Based on the crystal field environment, we argue for a splitting of the $J!=!2$ multiplet, leading to a low lying non-Kramers doublet which hosts quadrupolar and octupolar moments. We discuss a microscopic mechanism whereby the combined perturbative effects of orbital repulsion and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin interactions leads to ferro-octupolar coupling between neighboring sites, and stabilizes ferro-octupolar order for a face-centered cubic lattice. This same mechanism is also shown to disfavor quadrupolar ordering. We show that studying crystal field levels via Raman scattering in a magnetic field provides a probe of octupolar order. We study spin dynamics in the ferro-octupolar state using a slave-boson approach, uncovering a gapped and dispersive magnetic exciton. For sufficiently strong magnetic exchange, the dispersive exciton can condense, leading to conventional type-I antiferromagnetic (AFM) order which can preempt octupolar order. Our proposal for ferrooctupolar order, with specific results in the context of a model Hamiltonian, provides a comprehensive understanding of thermodynamics, $mu$SR, X-ray diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a range of cubic $5d^2$ double perovskite materials including Ba$_2$ZnOsO$_6$, Ba$_2$CaOsO$_6$, and Ba$_2$MgOsO$_6$. Our proposal for exciton condensation leading to type-I AFM order may be relevant to materials such as Sr$_2$MgOsO$_6$.

Basic mechanisms controlling orbital order and orbital fluctuations in transition metal oxides are discussed. The lattice driven classical orbital picture, e.g. like in manganites LaMnO$_3$, is contrasted to the quantum behavior of orbitals in frustrated superexchange models as realised in pseudocubic titanites ATiO$_3$ and vanadates AVO$_3$. In YVO$_3$, the lattice and superexchange effects strongly compete -- this explains the extreme sensitivity of magnetic states to temperature and doping. Lifting the $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy by a relativistic spin-orbital coupling is considered on example of the layered cobaltates. We find that the spin-orbital mixing of low-energy states leads to unusual magnetic correlations in a triangular lattice of the CoO$_2$ parent compound. Finally, the magnetism of sodium-rich compounds Na$_{1-x}$CoO$_2$ is discussed in terms of a spin/orbital polaronic liquid.

In the framework of mean field approach, we study topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions on a square lattice at half filling. We consider the combined effects of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin-orbit Rashba coupling. The spin-orbit Rashba coupling leads to a distinct phase of matter, the topological semimetal. We are talking about a new type of phase transition between the non-topological insulator state and topological semimetal state. New phase state is characterized by the zero energy Majorana states, which there are in defined region of the wave vectors and are localized at the boundaries of the sample. The zero energy Majorana states are dispersionless (they can be considered as flat bands), the Chern number and Hall conductance are equal to zero (note in two dimensional model).(note in two dimensional model).
Motivated by the experiment [St-Jean {it et al}., Nature Photon. {bf 11}, 651 (2017)] on topological phases with collective photon modes in a zigzag chain of polariton micropillars, we study spinless $p$-orbital fermions with local interorbital hoppings and repulsive interactions between $p_x$ and $p_y$ bands in zigzag optical lattices. We show that spinless $p$-band fermions in zigzag optical lattices can mimic the interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the effective transverse field Ising model in the presence of local hoppings. We analytically and numerically discuss the ground-state phases and quantum phase transitions of the model. This work provides a simple scheme to simulate topological phases and the quench dynamics of many-body systems in optical lattices.
We outline a general mechanism for Orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT), the coexistence of both itinerant and localized conduction electrons, and show how it can take place in a wide range of realistic situations, even for bands of identical width and correlation, provided a crystal field splits the energy levels in manifolds with different degeneracies and the exchange coupling is large enough to reduce orbital fluctuations. The mechanism relies on the different kinetic energy in manifolds with different degeneracy. This phase has Curie-Weiss susceptibility and non Fermi-liquid behavior, which disappear at a critical doping, all of which is reminiscent of the physics of the pnictides.
