In these lectures I will show some results obtained with the chiral unitary approach applied to the photo and electroproduction of mesons. The results for photoproduction of $eta pi^0 p$ and $K^0 pi^0 Sigma^+$, together with related reactions will be shown, having with common denominator the excitation of the $Delta(1700)$ resonance which is one of those dynamically generated in the chiral unitary approach. Then I will show results obtained for the $e^+ e^- to phi f_0(980)$ reaction which reproduce the bulk of the data except for a pronounced peak, giving support to a new mesonic resonance, X(2175). Results will also be shown for the electromagnetic form factors of the $N^*(1535)$ resonance, also dynamically generated in this approach. Finally, I will show some results on the photoproduction of the $omega$ in nuclei, showing that present experimental results claiming a shift of the $omega$ mass in the medium are tied to a particular choice of background and are not conclusive. One the other hand, the same experimental results show unambiguously a huge increase of the $omega$ width in the nuclear medium.

We report on the status of the search for eta-mesic nuclei and the studies of the interaction of the eta meson with nucleons. Recently we have completed the analysis of the new WASA-at-COSY data on the production of the eta meson with polarized proton beam. New results on the analyzing power for the pp->ppeta reaction with more than an order of magnitude improved precision shed a new light on the production mechanism of the eta meson in nucleon-nucleon collisions. Also, the latest results of the search for eta-mesic nuclei are discussed.

We propose a simple meson-exchange model of the photoproduction of $rho$- and $omega$-mesons off protons near threshold ($E_gamma$ less than 2 GeV). This model provides a good description of the available data and implies a large $rho$-nucleon interaction in the scalar channel ($sigma$-exchange). We use this phenomenological interaction to estimate the leading contribution to the self-energy of $rho$-mesons in matter. The implications of our calculation for experimental studies of the $rho$-meson mass in nuclei are discussed.

The photoproduction of $omega$ mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The $omega$ line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. The data are compared with results of transport calculations that predict a sensitivity of the $omega$ line shape to in-medium modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of $E_{gamma}^{lab}$ = 1109 MeV.}
Recent developments in understanding the influence of the nucleus on deep-inelastic structure functions, the EMC effect, are reviewed. A new data base which expresses ratios of structure functions in terms of the Bjorken variable $x_A=AQ^2/(2M_A q_0)$ is presented. Information about two-nucleon short-range correlations from experiments is also discussed and the remarkable linear relation between short-range correlations and teh EMC effect is reviewed. A convolution model that relates the underlying source of the EMC effect to modification of either the mean-field nucleons or the short-range correlated nucleons is presented. It is shown that both approaches are equally successful in describing the current EMC data.

After some short introductory remarks on particular issues on the vector mesons in nuclei, in this paper we present a short review of recent developments concerning the interaction of vector mesons with baryons and with nuclei from a modern perspective using the local hidden gauge formalism for the interaction of vector mesons. We present results for the vector baryon interaction and in particular for the resonances which appear as composite states, dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons, taking also the mixing of these states with pseudoscalars and baryons into account. We then venture into the charm sector, reporting on hidden charm baryon states around 4400 MeV, generated from the interaction of vector mesons and baryons with charm, which have a strong repercussion on the properties of the $J/Psi N$ interaction. We also address the interaction of $K^*$ with nuclei and make suggestions to measure the predicted huge width in the medium by means of the transparency ratio. The formalism is extended to study the phenomenon of $J/psi$ suppression in nuclei via $J/psi$ photoproduction reactions.
