We propose a simple meson-exchange model of the photoproduction of $rho$- and $omega$-mesons off protons near threshold ($E_gamma$ less than 2 GeV). This model provides a good description of the available data and implies a large $rho$-nucleon interaction in the scalar channel ($sigma$-exchange). We use this phenomenological interaction to estimate the leading contribution to the self-energy of $rho$-mesons in matter. The implications of our calculation for experimental studies of the $rho$-meson mass in nuclei are discussed.

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section on $phi$-meson photoproduction from deuterium near the production threshold for a proton using the CLAS detector and a tagged-photon beam in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was carried out by a triple coincidence detection of a proton, $K^+$ and $K^-$ near the theoretical production threshold of 1.57 GeV. The extracted differential cross sections $frac{dsigma}{dt}$ for the initial photon energy from 1.65-1.75 GeV are consistent with predictions based on a quasifree mechanism. This experiment establishes a baseline for a future experimental search for an exotic $phi$-N bound state from heavier nuclear targets utilizing subthreshold/near-threshold production of $phi$ mesons.

The photoproduction of $omega$ mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The $omega$ line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. The data are compared with results of transport calculations that predict a sensitivity of the $omega$ line shape to in-medium modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of $E_{gamma}^{lab}$ = 1109 MeV.}
An experimental study of $omega$ photoproduction on the proton was conducted by using the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The $gamma ptoomega p$ differential cross sections are measured from threshold to the incident-photon energy $E_gamma=1.40$ GeV ($W=1.87$ GeV for the center-of-mass energy) with 15-MeV binning in $E_gamma$ and full production-angle coverage. The quality of the present data near threshold gives access to a variety of interesting physics aspects. As an example, an estimation of the $omega N$ scattering length $alpha_{omega p}$ is provided.
Quasi-free photoproduction of $pieta$-pairs has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of 1.4 GeV, respectively up to photon-nucleon invariant masses up to 1.9 GeV. Total cross sections, angular distributions, invariant-mass distributions of the $pieta$ and meson-nucleon pairs, and beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured for the reactions $gamma prightarrow ppi^0eta$, $gamma nrightarrow npi^0eta$, $gamma prightarrow npi^+eta$, and $gamma nrightarrow ppi^-eta$ from nucleons bound inside the deuteron. For the $gamma p$ initial state data for free protons have also been analyzed. Finally, the total cross sections for quasi-free production of $pi^0eta$ pairs from nucleons bound in $^3$He nuclei have been investigated in view of final state interaction (FSI) effects. The experiments were performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator using an almost $4pi$ covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The shapes of all differential cross section data and the asymmetries are very similar for protons and neutrons and agree with the conjecture that the reactions are dominated by the sequential $Delta^{star}3/2^-rightarrowetaDelta(1232)rightarrowpieta N$ decay chain, mainly with $Delta(1700)3/2^-$ and $Delta(1940)3/2^-$. The ratios of the magnitude of the total cross sections also agree with this assumption. However, the absolute magnitudes of the cross sections are reduced by FSI effects with respect to free proton data.

Quasi-free photoproduction of $eta $ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $eta $-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $gamma n rightarrow neta $ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $eta $-production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. The data are compared to model calculations taking into account contributions from nucleon resonances and $t$-channel exchanges.
