We establish the Lagrangian nature of the discrete isospectral and isomonodromic dynamical systems corresponding to the re-factorization transformations of the rational matrix functions on the Riemann sphere. Specifically, in the isospectral case we generalize the Moser-Veselov approach to integrability of discrete systems via the re-factorization of matrix polynomials to a more general class of matrix rational functions that have a simple divisor and, in the quadratic case, explicitly write the Lagrangian function for such systems. Next we show that if we let certain parameters in this Lagrangian to be time-dependent, the resulting Euler-Lagrange equations describe the isomonodromic transformations of systems of linear difference equations. It is known that in some special cases such equations reduce to the difference Painleve equation. As an example, we show how to obtain the difference Painlev`e V equation in this way, and hence we establish that this equation can be written in the Lagrangian form.
We derive isospectral flows of the mass density in the string boundary value problem corresponding to general boundary conditions. In particular, we show that certain class of rational flows produces in a suitable limit all flows generated by polynomials in negative powers of the spectral parameter. We illustrate the theory with concrete examples of isospectral flows of discrete mass densities which we prove to be Hamiltonian and for which we provide explicit solutions of equations of motion in terms of Stieltjes continued fractions and Hankel determinants.
We discuss an extension of the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential 1-form to a form closed on the full space of extended monodromy data of systems of linear ordinary differential equations with rational coefficients. This extension is based on the results of M. Bertola generalizing a previous construction by B. Malgrange. We show how this 1-form can be used to solve a long-standing problem of evaluation of the connection formulae for the isomonodromic tau functions which would include an explicit computation of the relevant constant factors. We explain how this scheme works for Fuchsian systems and, in particular, calculate the connection constant for generic Painleve VI tau function. The result proves the conjectural formula for this constant proposed in cite{ILT13}. We also apply the method to non-Fuchsian systems and evaluate constant factors in the asymptotics of Painleve II tau function.
The existence of non-isomorphic graphs which share the same Laplace spectrum (to be referred to as isospectral graphs) leads naturally to the following question: What additional information is required in order to resolve isospectral graphs? It was suggested by Band, Shapira and Smilansky that this might be achieved by either counting the number of nodal domains or the number of times the eigenfunctions change sign (the so-called flip count). Recently examples of (discrete) isospectral graphs with the same flip count and nodal count have been constructed by K. Ammann by utilising Godsil-McKay switching. Here we provide a simple alternative mechanism that produces systematic examples of both discrete and quantum isospectral graphs with the same flip and nodal counts.
We prove the integrability and superintegrability of a family of natural Hamiltonians which includes and generalises those studied in some literature, originally defined on the 2D Minkowski space. Some of the new Hamiltonians are a perfect analogy of the well-known superintegrable system on the Euclidean plane proposed by Tremblay-Turbiner-Winternitz and they are defined on Minkowski space, as well as on all other 2D manifolds of constant curvature, Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian. We show also how the application of the coupling-constant-metamorphosis technique allows us to obtain new superintegrable Hamiltonians from the previous ones. Moreover, for the Minkowski case, we show the quantum superintegrability of the corresponding quantum Hamiltonian operator. Our results are obtained by applying the theory of extended Hamiltonian systems, which is strictly connected with the geometry of warped manifolds.
Discrete spectral transformations of skew orthogonal polynomials are presented. From these spectral transformations, it is shown that the corresponding discrete integrable systems are derived both in 1+1 dimension and in 2+1 dimension. Especially in the (2+1)-dimensional case, the corresponding system can be extended to 2x2 matrix form. The factorization theorem of the Christoffel kernel for skew orthogonal polynomials in random matrix theory is presented as a by-product of these transformations.
