Context: Halpha images of star bursting irregular galaxies reveal a large amount of extended ionized gas structures, in some cases at kpc-distance away from any place of current star forming activity. A kinematic analysis of especially the faint structures in the halo of dwarf galaxies allows insights into the properties and the origin of this gas component. This is important for the chemical evolution of galaxies, the enrichment of the intergalactic medium, and for the understanding of the formation of galaxies in the early universe. Aims: We want to investigate whether the ionized gas detected in two irregular dwarf galaxies (NGC 2366 and NGC 4861) stays gravitationally bound to the host galaxy or can escape from it by becoming a freely flowing wind. Methods: Very deep Halpha images of NGC 2366 and NGC 4861 were obtained to detect and catalog both small and large scale ionized gas structures down to very low surface brightnesses. Subsequently, high-resolution long-slit echelle spectroscopy of the Halpha line was performed for a detailed kinematic analysis of the most prominent filaments and shells. To calculate the escape velocity of both galaxies and to compare it with the derived expansion velocities of the detected filaments and shells, we used dark matter halo models. Results: We detected a huge amount of both small scale (up to a few hundred pc) and large scale (about 1-2 kpc of diameter or length) ionized gas structures on our Halpha images. Many of the fainter ones are new detections. The echelle spectra reveal outflows and expanding bubbles/shells with velocities between 20 and 110 km/s. Several of these structures are in accordance with filaments in the Halpha images. A comparison with the escape velocities of the galaxies derived from the NFW dark matter halo model shows that all gas features stay gravitationally bound.

Using 3D spectroscopy with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, we study the ionized gas kinematics in 59 nearby dwarf galaxies. Combining our results with data from literature, we provide a global relation between the gas velocity dispersion (sigma) and the star formation rate (SFR) and Halpha luminosity for galaxies in a very broad range of star formation rates SFR=0.001-300 Msun/yr. We find that the SFR-sigma relation for the combined sample of dwarf galaxies, star forming, local luminous, and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies can be fitted as sigma~ SFR^(5.3+-0.2). This implies that the slope of the L-sigma relation inferred from the sample of rotation supported disc galaxies (including mergers) is similar to the L-sigma relation of individual giant HII regions. We present arguments that the velocity dispersion of the ionized gas does not reflect the virial motions in the gravitational potential of dwarf galaxies, and instead is mainly determined by the energy injected into the interstellar medium by the ongoing star formation.
In order to examine the excitation and ionization mechanism of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (DIG) we have obtained optical longslit spectra of seven edge-on spiral galaxies. In four objects the brightest emission lines can be traced out to distances of typically 1.5 kpc above the disk. For NGC1963 and NGC3044 line ratios such as [NII]6583/Ha or [SII]6717/Ha as well as [OIII]5007/Hb could be measured for the halo DIG. This allows us to discuss the DIG in the halo of these objects in the framework of diagnostic diagrams. For these two objects, the line ratios of [OIII]5007/Hb decrease with increasing z, different from the recently reported trend in NGC891 (Rand 1998). We find that emission lines from the DIG in the disks are in good agreement with photoionization models using a dilute radiation field. However, with increasing z these models fail to predict the measured [OI]6300/Ha and HeI5876/Ha line ratios for NGC1963. Diagnostic diagrams reveal for NGC1963 the need for a second ionization mechanism of the halo DIG (besides photoionization). This additional source could be shock ionization. The same diagrams demonstrate an intermediate classification for NGC3044. Plots of [SII]/[NII] vs. emission measure reveal significant changes towards the halo and seem to trace local small scale density fluctuations of the extraplanar DIG.
We describe an extensive FUSE survey of highly ionized oxygen in the vicinity of the Milky Way that serves as an example of the type of study that would be desirable for other galactic systems. Understanding the origin of hot gas in the vicinity of galaxies and its relationship to the intergalactic medium presents a major observational challenge. Ultraviolet absorption-line spectroscopy is currently the most direct means for comprehensive investigations of the gas in galactic environments, but even with present (and near-term) facilities the number of background objects available to probe nearby galaxy halos and low-redshift cosmological structures is limited. Studying these structures over a range of impact parameters and angular separations would provide fundamental information about the baryonic content of the hot gas, its physical conditions, and its origins. A large space telescope optimized for high resolution spectroscopy in the 900-3200 Angstrom wavelength region at a sensitivity sufficient to observe faint AGNs/QSOs at angular separations of <1 degree would be ideal for such studies.
We address the spatial scale, ionization structure, mass and metal content of gas at the Milky Way disk-halo interface detected as absorption in the foreground of seven closely-spaced, high-latitude halo blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs) with heights z = 3 - 14 kpc. We detect transitions that trace multiple ionization states (e.g. CaII, FeII, SiIV, CIV) with column densities that remain constant with height from the disk, indicating that the gas most likely lies within z < 3.4 kpc. The intermediate ionization state gas traced by CIV and SiIV is strongly correlated over the full range of transverse separations probed by our sightlines, indicating large, coherent structures greater than 1 kpc in size. The low ionization state material traced by CaII and FeII does not exhibit a correlation with either N$_{rm HI}$ or transverse separation, implying cloudlets or clumpiness on scales less than 10 pc. We find that the observed ratio log(N_SiIV/ N_CIV), with a median value of -0.69+/-0.04, is sensitive to the total carbon content of the ionized gas under the assumption of either photoionization or collisional ionization. The only self-consistent solution for photoionized gas requires that Si be depleted onto dust by 0.35 dex relative to the solar Si/C ratio, similar to the level of Si depletion in DLAs and in the Milky Way ISM. The allowed range of values for the areal mass infall rate of warm, ionized gas at the disk-halo interface is 0.0003 < dM_gas / dtdA [M_sun kpc^-2 yr^-] < 0.006. Our data support a physical scenario in which the Milky Way is fed by complex, multiphase processes at its disk-halo interface that involve kpc-scale ionized envelopes or streams containing pc-scale, cool clumps.

We present a study of the ionized gas in a sample of 65 nearby early-type galaxies, for which we have acquired optical intermediate-resolution spectra. Emission lines are detected in ~89 % of the sample. The incidence of emission appears independent from the E or S0 morphological classes. According to classical diagnostic diagrams, the majority of the galaxies are LINERs. However, the galaxies tend to move toward the Composites region (at lower [NII]/Halpha values) as the emission lines are measured at larger galacto-centric distances. This suggests that different ionization mechanisms may be at work in LINERs.
