We have examined whether the Co ions crystallographically substitute on the Ti sites in rutile and anatase Ti_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O$_{2-delta}$ thin films that exhibit room-temperature ferromagnetism. Intensities of the x-ray Bragg reflection from the films were measured around the $K$-absorption-edge of Co. If the Co ions randomly substitute on the Ti sites, the intensity should exhibit an anomaly due to the anomalous dispersion of the atomic scattering factor of Co. However, none of the anatase and rutile samples did exhibit an anomaly, unambiguously showing that the Co ions in Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O$_{2-delta}$ are not exactly located at the Ti sites of TiO$_2$. The absence of the anomaly is probably caused by a significant deformation of the local structure around Co due to the oxygen vacancy. We have applied the same method to paramagnetic Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films and obtained direct evidence that the Co ions are indeed substituted on the Zn sites.

This paper reviews the present understanding of the origin of ferromagnetic response of diluted magnetic semiconductors and diluted magnetic oxides as well as in some nominally magnetically undoped materials. It is argued that these systems can be grouped into four classes. To the first belong composite materials in which precipitations of a known ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic or antiferromagnetic compound account for magnetic characteristics at high temperatures. The second class forms alloys showing chemical nano-scale phase separation into the regions with small and large concentrations of the magnetic constituent. To the third class belong (Ga,Mn)As, heavily doped p-(Zn,Mn)Te, and related semiconductors. In these solid solutions the theory built on p-d Zeners model of hole-mediated ferromagnetism and on either the Kohn-Luttinger kp theory or the multi-orbital tight-binding approach describes qualitatively, and often quantitatively many relevant properties. Finally, in a number of carrier-doped DMS and DMO a competition between long-range ferromagnetic and short-range antiferromagnetic interactions and/or the proximity of the localisation boundary lead to an electronic nano-scale phase separation.

The carrier spin and impurity spin densities in diluted magnetic semiconductors are considered using a semiclassical approach. Equations of motions for the spin densities and the carrier spin current density in the paramagnetic phase are derived, exhibiting their coupled diffusive dynamics. The dynamical spin susceptibilities are obtained from these equations. The theory holds for p-type and n-type semiconductors doped with magnetic ions of arbitrary spin quantum number. Spin-orbit coupling in the valence band is shown to lead to anisotropic spin diffusion and to a suppression of the Curie temperature in p-type materials. As an application we derive the Hall-voltage noise in the paramagnetic phase. This quantity is critically enhanced close to the Curie temperature due to the contribution from the anomalous Hall effect.
Chemical pressure is an effective method to tune physical properties, particularly for diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) of which ferromagnetic ordering is mediated by charge carriers. Via substitution of smaller Ca for larger Sr, we introduce chemical pressure on (Sr,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2 to fabricate a new DMS material (Ca,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2. Carriers and spins are introduced by substitutions of (Ca,Na) and (Cd,Mn) respectively. The unit cell volume reduces by 6.2% after complete substitution of Ca for Sr, suggesting a subsistent chemical pressure. Importantly the local geometry of [Cd/MnAs4] tetrahedron is optimized via chemical compression that increases the Mn-As hybridization leading to enhanced ferromagnetic interactions. As a result, the maximum Curie temperature (TC) is increased by about 50% while the the maximum saturation moment increases by over 100% from (Sr,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2 to (Ca,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2. The chemical pressure estimated from the equation of state is equal to an external physical pressure of 3.6 GPa.
We present the studies of Sn/1-x/Cr/x/Te semimagnetic semiconductors with chemical composition x ranging from 0.004 to 0.012. The structural characterization indicates that even at low average Cr-content x < ?0.012, the aggregation into micrometer size clusters appears in our samples. The magnetic properties are affected by the presence of clusters. In all our samples we observe the transition into the ordered state at temperatures between 130 and 140 K. The analysis of both static and dynamic magnetic susceptibility data indicates that the spin-glass-like state is observed in our samples. The addition of Cr to the alloy seems to shift the spin-glass-like transition from 130 K for x = 0.004 to 140 K for x = 0.012.
We report on the growth of heterostructures composed of layers of the high-Curie temperature ferromagnet Co-doped (La,Sr)TiO3 (Co-LSTO) with high-mobility SrTiO3 (STO) substrates processed at low oxygen pressure. While perpendicular spin-dependent transport measurements in STO//Co-LSTO/LAO/Co tunnel junctions demonstrate the existence of a large spin polarization in Co-LSTO, planar magnetotransport experiments on STO//Co-LSTO samples evidence electronic mobilities as high as 10000 cm2/Vs at T = 10 K. At high enough applied fields and low enough temperatures (H < 60 kOe, T < 4 K) Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are also observed. We present an extensive analysis of these quantum oscillations and relate them with the electronic properties of STO, for which we find large scattering rates up to ~ 10 ps. Thus, this work opens up the possibility to inject a spin-polarized current from a high-Curie temperature diluted oxide into an isostructural system with high-mobility and a large spin diffusion length.
