A set of stabilizer operations augmented by some special initial states known as magic states, gives the possibility of universal fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, magic state preparation inevitably involves nonideal operations that introduce noise. The most common method to eliminate the noise is magic state distillation (MSD) by stabilizer operations. Here we propose a hybrid MSD protocol by connecting a four-qubit H-type MSD with a five-qubit T-type MSD, in order to overcome some disadvantages of the previous MSD protocols. The hybrid MSD protocol further integrates distillable ranges of different existing MSD protocols and extends the T-type distillable range to the stabilizer octahedron edges. And it provides considerable improvement in qubit cost for almost all of the distillable range. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrate the four-qubit H-type MSD protocol using nuclear magnetic resonance technology, together with the previous five-qubit MSD experiment, to show the feasibility of the hybrid MSD protocol.

Certain physical systems that one might consider for fault-tolerant quantum computing where qubits do not readily interact, for instance photons, are better suited for measurement-based quantum-computational protocols. Here we propose a measurement-b ased model for universal quantum computation that simulates the braiding and fusion of Majorana modes. To derive our model we develop a general framework that maps any scheme of fault-tolerant quantum computation with stabilizer codes into the measurement-based picture. As such, our framework gives an explicit way of producing fault-tolerant models of universal quantum computation with linear optics using protocols developed using the stabilizer formalism. Given the remarkable fault-tolerant properties that Majorana modes promise, the main example we present offers a robust and resource efficient proposal for photonic quantum computation.
We explain how to combine holonomic quantum computation (HQC) with fault tolerant quantum error correction. This establishes the scalability of HQC, putting it on equal footing with other models of computation, while retaining the inherent robustness the method derives from its geometric nature.
Topological error correcting codes, and particularly the surface code, currently provide the most feasible roadmap towards large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation. As such, obtaining fast and flexible decoding algorithms for these codes, withi n the experimentally relevant context of faulty syndrome measurements, is of critical importance. In this work, we show that the problem of decoding such codes, in the full fault-tolerant setting, can be naturally reformulated as a process of repeated interactions between a decoding agent and a code environment, to which the machinery of reinforcement learning can be applied to obtain decoding agents. As a demonstration, by using deepQ learning, we obtain fast decoding agents for the surface code, for a variety of noise-models.

Reliable qubits are difficult to engineer, but standard fault-tolerance schemes use seven or more physical qubits to encode each logical qubit, with still more qubits required for error correction. The large overhead makes it hard to experiment with fault-tolerance schemes with multiple encoded qubits. The 15-qubit Hamming code protects seven encoded qubits to distance three. We give fault-tolerant procedures for applying arbitrary Clifford operations on these encoded qubits, using only two extra qubits, 17 total. In particular, individual encoded qubits within the code block can be targeted. Fault-tolerant universal computation is possible with four extra qubits, 19 total. The procedures could enable testing more sophisticated protected circuits in small-scale quantum devices. Our main technique is to use gadgets to protect gates against correlated faults. We also take advantage of special code symmetries, and use pieceable fault tolerance.

We propose an all-linear-optical scheme to ballistically generate a cluster state for measurement-based topological fault-tolerant quantum computation using hybrid photonic qubits entangled in a continuous-discrete domain. Availability of near-determ inistic Bell-state measurements on hybrid qubits is exploited for the purpose. In the presence of photon losses, we show that our scheme leads to a significant enhancement in both tolerable photon-loss rate and resource overheads. More specifically, we report a photon-loss threshold of $sim3.3times 10^{-3}$, which is higher than those of known optical schemes under a reasonable error model. Furthermore, resource overheads to achieve logical error rate of $10^{-6} (10^{-15})$ is estimated to be $sim8.5times10^{5} (1.7times10^{7})$ which is significantly less by multiple orders of magnitude compared to other reported values in the literature.
