The correlated behavior of electrons determines the structure and optical properties of molecules, semiconductor and other systems. Valuable information on these correlations is provided by measuring the response to femtosecond laser pulses, which probe the very short time period during which the excited particles remain correlated. The interpretation of four-wave-mixing techniques, commonly used to study the energy levels and dynamics of many-electron systems, is complicated by many competing effects and overlapping resonances. Here we propose a coherent optical technique, specifically designed to provide a background-free probe for electronic correlations in many-electron systems. The proposed signal pulse is generated only when the electrons are correlated, which gives rise to an extraordinary sensitivity. The peak pattern in two-dimensional plots, obtained by displaying the signal vs. two frequencies conjugated to two pulse delays, provides a direct visualization and specific signatures of the many-electron wavefunctions.

Quantum coherence of superposed states, especially of entangled states, is indispensable for many quantum technologies. However, it is vulnerable to environmental noises, posing a fundamental challenge in solid-state systems including spin qubits. He re we show a scheme of entanglement engineering where pure dephasing assists the generation of quantum entanglement at distant sites in a chain of electron spins confined in semiconductor quantum dots. One party of an entangled spin pair, prepared at a single site, is transferred to the next site and then adiabatically swapped with a third spin using a transition across a multi-level avoided crossing. This process is accelerated by the noise-induced dephasing through a variant of the quantum Zeno effect, without sacrificing the coherence of the entangled state. Our finding brings insight into the spin dynamics in open quantum systems coupled to noisy environments, opening an avenue to quantum state manipulation utilizing decoherence effects.
We report on noise measurements in a quantum dot in the presence of Kondo correlations. Close to the unitary limit, with the conductance reaching 1.8e2/h, we observed an average backscattered charge of e*~5e/3, while weakly biasing the quantum dot. T his result held to bias voltages up to half the Kondo temperature. Away from the unitary limit, the charge was measured to be e as expected. These results confirm and extend the prediction by E. Sela et al. [1], that suggested that two-electron backscattering processes dominate over single-electron backscattering processes near the unitary limit, with an average backscattered charge e*~5e/3.
A single-electron transistor incorporated as part of a nanomechanical resonator represents an extreme limit of electron-phonon coupling. While it allows for fast and sensitive electromechanical measurements, it also introduces backaction forces from electron tunnelling which randomly perturb the mechanical state. Despite the stochastic nature of this backaction, under conditions of strong coupling it is predicted to create self-sustaining coherent mechanical oscillations. Here, we verify this prediction using time-resolved measurements of a vibrating carbon nanotube transistor. This electromechanical oscillator has intriguing similarities with a laser. The single-electron transistor, pumped by an electrical bias, acts as a gain medium while the resonator acts as a phonon cavity. Despite the unconventional operating principle, which does not involve stimulated emission, we confirm that the output is coherent, and demonstrate other laser behaviour including injection locking and frequency narrowing through feedback.
Experimental results of rectification of a constant wave radio frequency (RF) current flowing in a single-layered ferromagnetic wire are presented. We show that a detailed external magnetic field dependence of the RF current induced a direct-current voltage spectrum. The mechanism of the rectification is discussed in a term of the spin transfer torque, and the rectification is closely related to resonant spin wave excitation with the assistant of the spin-polarized RF current. The micromagnetic simulation taking into account the spin transfer torque provides strong evidence which supports the generation of spin wave excitation by the RF current.

Chirality induced spin selectivity, discovered about two decades ago in helical molecules, is a non-equilibrium effect that emerges from the interplay between geometrical helicity and spin-orbit interactions. Several model Hamiltonians building on th is interplay have been proposed and while these can yield spin-polarized transport properties that agrees with experimental observations, they simultaneously depend on unrealistic values of the spin-orbit interaction parameters. It is likely, however, that a common deficit originates from the fact that all these models are uncorrelated, or, single-electron theories. Therefore, chirality induced spin selectivity is, here, addressed using a many-body approach, which allows for non-equilibrium conditions and a systematic treatment of the correlated state. The intrinsic molecular spin-polarization increases by two orders of magnitudes, or more, compared to the corresponding result in the uncorrelated model. In addition, the electronic structure responds to varying external magnetic conditions which, therefore, enables comparisons of the currents provided for different spin-polarizations in one of the (or both) leads between which the molecule is mounted. Using experimentally feasible parameters and room temperature, the obtained normalized difference between such currents may be as large as 5 - 10 % for short molecular chains, clearly suggesting the vital importance of including electron correlations when searching for explanations of the phenomenon.
