The first true coaxial 18-fold segmented n-type HPGe prototype detector produced by Canberra-France for the GERDA neutrinoless double beta-decay project was tested both at Canberra-France and at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physik in Munich. The main characteristics of the detector are given and measurements concerning detector properties are described. A novel method to establish contacts between the crystal and a Kapton cable is presented.

A fast method to determine the crystallographic axes of segmented true-coaxial high-purity germanium detectors is presented. It is based on the analysis of segment-occupancy patterns obtained by irradiation with radioactive sources. The measured patt erns are compared to predictions for different axes orientations. The predictions require a simulation of the trajectories of the charge carriers taking the transverse anisotropy of their drift into account.

A new package to simulate the formation of electrical pulses in segmented true-coaxial high purity germanium detectors is presented. The computation of the electric field and weighting potentials inside the detector as well as of the trajectories of the charge carriers is described. In addition, the treatment of bandwidth limitations and noise are discussed. Comparison of simulated to measured pulses, obtained from an 18-fold segmented detector operated inside a cryogenic test facility, are presented.

The GERDA (GERmanium Detector Array) experiment aiming to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge at the Laboratori Nazionali Del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy, will operate bare enriched high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in liquid argo n. GERDA Phase I will use the enriched diodes from the previous Heidelberg-Moscow (HdM) and IGEX experiments. With the HPGe detectors mounted in a low-mass holder, GERDA aims at an excellent energy resolution and extremely low background. The goal is to check the claim for the neutrinoless double beta decay evidence in the HdM 76Ge experiment within one year of data taking. Before dismounting the enriched diodes from their cryostat, the performance parameters of the HdM and the IGEX detectors have been measured. The diodes have been removed from their cryostats, their dimensions measured and they have been put under va-cuum in a transportation container. They are now being refurbished for GERDA Phase I at Canberra Semiconductor NV. Before operating the enriched diodes, a non-enriched HPGe p-type detector mounted in a low-mass holder is operated in the liquid argon test facility of the GERDA Detector Laboratory (GDL) at LNGS. Since January 2006, the testing of the prototype detector is being carried out in the GDL as well as at the site of the detector manufacturer.

A four-fold segmented n-type point-contact Broad Energy high-purity germanium detector, SegBEGe, has been characterised at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik in Munich. The main characteristics of the detector are described and first measurements con cerning the detector properties are presented. The possibility to use mirror pulses to determine source positions is discussed as well as charge losses observed close to the core contact.

Purpose: CMOS pixel sensors have become extremely attractive for future high performance tracking devices. Initial R&D work has been conducted for the vertex detector for the proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider that will allow precision Higg s measurements. It is critical to achieve low power consumption to minimize the material budget. This requires careful optimization of the sensor diode geometry to reach high charge-over-capacitance that allows reduction in analog power consumption. Methods: The electrode area and footprint are two critical elements in sensor diode geometry and have deciding impacts on the sensor charge collection performance. Prototype CMOS pixel sensor JadePix-1 has been developed with pixel sectors implementing different electrode area and footprint and their charge collection performance has been characterized with radioactive resources. Results: Charge-to-voltage conversion gains are calibrated with low energy X-ray. Noise, charge collection efficiency, charge-over-capacitance and signal-to-noise ratio are obtained for pixel sectors of different electrode area and footprint. Conclusion: Small electrode area and large footprint are preferred to achieve high charge-over-capacitance that promises low analog power consumption. Ongoing studies on sensor performance before and after irradiation, combined with this work, will conclude on the diode geometry optimization.
