This paper presents an experimental and theoretical study of the distribution of carbon atoms in the octahedral interstitial sites of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase of the iron-carbon system. The experimental part of the work consists of Mossbauer measurements in Fe-C alloys with up to about 12 atomic percent C, which are interpreted in terms of two alternative models for the distribution of C atoms in the interstitial sites. The theoretical part combines an analysis of the chemical potential of C based on the quasichemical approximation to the statistical mechanics of interstitial solutions, with three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations. The latter were performed by assuming a gas like mixture of C atoms and vacancies (Va) in the octahedral interstitial sites. The number of C-C, C-Va and Va-Va pairs calculated using Monte Carlo simulations are compared with those given by the quasichemical model. Furthermore, the relative fraction of the various Fe environments were calculated and compared with those extracted from the Mossbauer spectra. The simulations reproduce remarkably well the relative fractions obtained assuming the Fe(8)C(1-y) model for Mossbauer spectra, which includes some blocking of the nearest neighbour interstitial sites by a C atom. With the new experimental and theoretical information obtained in the present study, a critical discussion is reported of the extent to which such blocking effect is accounted for in current thermodynamic models of the Fe-C fcc phase. Carbon nanoscrolls are material structures that have been shown to exhibit excellent performances in electric capacity and carrier mobility. They also represent a prime realization of radial superlattices whose geometric shape is expected to modulate the electronic and magnetic properties. Here, we show that these nanostructures display the Aharonov-Bohm effect even if they do not possess the closed cylindrical geometry of carbon nanotubes. Using a combination of density functional theory calculations and low-energy continuum models, we determine the electronic states in a simple two-winding carbon nanoscroll, and indeed show oscillations of the energy levels in the presence of an axial magnetic field. We prove that these oscillations, and hence the occurrence of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, are entirely due to electronic tunneling between the two windings of the spiral-shaped scroll. We also show that the open geometry of the scroll leads to the occurrence of one-dimensional conducting channels. Our study establishes the occurrence of the Aharonov-Bohm effect as a generic property of radial superlattices, including the recently synthesized high-order van der Waals superlattices.
Because substitutions of BH4- anion with Br can stabilize the hexagonal structure of the LiBH4 at room temperature, leading to a high Li-ion conductivity, its thermodynamic stability has been investigated in this work. The binary LiBH4-LiBr system ha s been explored by means of X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, combined with an assessment of thermodynamic properties. The monophasic zone of the hexagonal Li(BH4)1-x(Br)x solid solution has been defined from x=0.30 to x=0.55 at room temperature. Solubility limits have been determined by in-situ X-ray diffraction at various temperatures. For the formation of the h-Li(BH4)0.6(Br)0.4 solid solution, a value of the enthalpy of mixing has been determined experimentally equal to 1.0 kJ/mol. In addition, the enthalpy of melting has been measured for various compositions. Lattice stabilities of LiBH4 and LiBr have been determined by ab initio calculations, using CRYSTAL and VASP codes. Combining results of experiments and theoretical calculations, the LiBH4-LiBr phase diagram has been determined in all composition and temperature range by the CALPHAD method.

The problem of finite size effects in s=1/2 Ising systems showing slow dynamics of the magnetization is investigated introducing diamagnetic impurities in a Co$^{2+}$-radical chain. The static magnetic properties have been measured and analyzed consi dering the peculiarities induced by the ferrimagnetic character of the compound. The dynamic susceptibility shows that an Arrhenius law is observed with the same energy barrier for the pure and the doped compounds while the prefactor decreases, as theoretically predicted. Multiple spins reversal has also been investigated.

Both even- and odd-numbered neutral carbon clusters Cn (n = 2-10) are systematically studied using the energy minimization method and the modified Brenner potential for the carbon-carbon interactions. Many stable configurations were found and several new isomers are predicted. For the lowest energy stable configurations we obtained their binding energies and bond lengths. We found that for n < 6 the linear isomer is the most stable one while for n > 5 the monocyclic isomer becomes the most stable. The latter was found to be regular for all studied clusters. The dependence of the binding energy for linear and cyclic clusters versus the cluster size n (n = 2-10) is found to be in good agreement with several previous calculations, in particular with ab initio calculations as well as with experimental data for n = 2-5.
The incorporation of Eu into the diamond lattice is investigated in a combined theoretical-experimental study. The large size of the Eu ion induces a strain on the host lattice, which is minimal for the Eu-vacancy complex. The oxidation state of Eu i s calculated to be 3+ for all defect models considered. In contrast, the total charge of the defect-complexes is shown to be negative -1.5 to -2.3 electron. Hybrid-functional electronic-band-structures show the luminescence of the Eu defect to be strongly dependent on the local defect geometry. The 4-coordinated Eu substitutional dopant is the most promising candidate to present the typical Eu3+ luminescence, while the 6-coordinated Eu-vacancy complex is expected not to present any luminescent behaviour. Preliminary experimental results on the treatment of diamond films with Eu-containing precursor indicate the possible incorporation of Eu into diamond films treated by drop-casting. Changes in the PL spectrum, with the main luminescent peak shifting from approximately 614 nm to 611 nm after the growth plasma exposure, and the appearance of a shoulder peak at 625 nm indicate the potential incorporation. Drop-casting treatment with an electronegative polymer material was shown not to be necessary to observe the Eu signature following the plasma exposure, and increased the background luminescence.
