Virial (aka scaling) identities are integral identities that are useful for a variety of purposes in non-linear field theories, including establishing no-go theorems for solitonic and black hole solutions, as well as for checking the accuracy of numerical solutions. In this paper, we provide a pedagogical rationale for the derivation of such integral identities, starting from the standard variational treatment of particle mechanics. In the framework of one-dimensional (1D) effective actions, the treatment presented here yields a set of useful formulas for computing virial identities in any field theory. Then, we propose that a complete treatment of virial identities in relativistic gravity must take into account the appropriate boundary term. For General Relativity this is the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term. We test and confirm this proposal with concrete examples. Our analysis here is restricted to spherically symmetric configurations, which yield 1D effective actions (leaving higher-D effective actions and in particular the axially symmetric case to a companion paper). In this case, we show that there is a particular gauge choice, $i.e.$ a choice of coordinates and parameterizing metric functions, that simplifies the computation of virial identities in General Relativity, making both the Einstein-Hilbert action and the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term non-contributing. Under this choice, the virial identity results exclusively from the matter action. For generic gauge choices, however, this is not the case.

In this review we consider first order gravity in four dimensions. In particular, we focus our attention in formulations where the fundamental variables are a tetrad $e_a^I$ and a SO(3,1) connection ${omega_{aI}}^J$. We study the most general action principle compatible with diffeomorphism invariance. This implies, in particular, considering besides the standard Einstein-Hilbert-Palatini term, other terms that either do not change the equations of motion, or are topological in nature. Having a well defined action principle sometimes involves the need for additional boundary terms, whose detailed form may depend on the particular boundary conditions at hand. In this work, we consider spacetimes that include a boundary at infinity, satisfying asymptotically flat boundary conditions and/or an internal boundary satisfying isolated horizons boundary conditions. We focus on the covariant Hamiltonian formalism where the phase space $Gamma$ is given by solutions to the equations of motion. For each of the possible terms contributing to the action we consider the well posedness of the action, its finiteness, the contribution to the symplectic structure, and the Hamiltonian and Noether charges. For the chosen boundary conditions, standard boundary terms warrant a well posed theory. Furthermore, the boundary and topological terms do not contribute to the symplectic structure, nor the Hamiltonian conserved charges. The Noether conserved charges, on the other hand, do depend on such additional terms. The aim of this manuscript is to present a comprehensive and self-contained treatment of the subject, so the style is somewhat pedagogical. Furthermore, along the way we point out and clarify some issues that have not been clearly understood in the literature.

Boundary actions for three-dimensional quantum gravity in the discretized formalism of Ponzano-Regge are studied with a view towards understanding the boundary degrees of freedom. These degrees of freedom postulated in the holography hypothesis are s upposed to be characteristic of quantum gravity theories. In particular it is expected that some of these degrees of freedom reside on black hole horizons. This paper is a study of these ideas in the context of a theory of quantum gravity that requires no additional structure such as supersymmetry or special gravitational backgrounds. Lorentzian as well as Euclidean regimes are examined. Some surprising relationships to Liouville theory and string theory in AdS(3) are found.

The intriguing choice to treat alternative theories of gravity by means of the Palatini approach, namely elevating the affine connection to the role of independent variable, contains the seed of some interesting (usually under-explored) generalizatio ns of General Relativity, the metric-affine theories of gravity. The peculiar aspect of these theories is to provide a natural way for matter fields to be coupled to the independent connection through the covariant derivative built from the connection itself. Adopting a procedure borrowed from the effective field theory prescriptions, we study the dynamics of metric-affine theories of increasing order, that in the complete version include invariants built from curvature, nonmetricity and torsion. We show that even including terms obtained from nonmetricity and torsion to the second order density Lagrangian, the connection lacks dynamics and acts as an auxiliary field that can be algebraically eliminated, resulting in some extra interactions between metric and matter fields.
In this article, the bulk viscosity is introduced in a modified gravity model. The gravitational action has a general $f(R,T)$ form, where $R$ and $ T $ are the curvature scalar and the trace of energy momentum tensor respectively. An effective equat ion of state (EoS) has been investigated in the cosmological evolution with bulk viscosity. In the present scenario, the Hubble parameter which has a scaling relation with the redshift can be obtained generically. The role of deceleration parameter $q$ and equation of state parameter $omega $ is discussed to explain the late-time accelerating expansion of the universe. The statefinder parameters and Om diagnostic analysis are discussed for our obtained model to distinguish from other dark energy models together with the analysis of energy conditions and velocity of sound for the model. We have also numerically investigated the model by detailed maximum likelihood analysis of $580$ Type Ia supernovae from Union $ 2.1$ compilation datasets and updated $57$ Hubble datasets ($31$ data points from differential age method and $26$ points from BAO and other methods). It is with efforts found that the present model is in good agreement with observations.

In a recent paper, we introduced a new discretization scheme for gravity in 2+1 dimensions. Starting from the continuum theory, this new scheme allowed us to rigorously obtain the discrete phase space of loop gravity, coupled to particle-like edge mo de degrees of freedom. In this work, we expand on that result by considering the most general choice of integration during the discretization process. We obtain a family of polarizations of the discrete phase space. In particular, one member of this family corresponds to the usual loop gravity phase space, while another corresponds to a new polarization, dual to the usual one in several ways. We study its properties, including the relevant constraints and the symmetries they generate. Furthermore, we motivate a relation between the dual polarization and teleparallel gravity.
