The emergence of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has aroused broad interest. However, the ferromagnetic instability has been a problem remained. In this work, by using the first-principles calculations, we identified the critical ranges of strain and doping for the bilayer Cr2Ge2Te6 within which the ferromagnetic stability can be enhanced. Beyond the critical range, the tensile strain can induce the phase transition from the ferromagnetic to the antiferromagnetic, and the direction of magnetic easy axis can be converted from out-of-plane to in-plane due to the increase of compressive strain, or electrostatic doping. We also predicted an electron doping range, within which the ferromagnetism can be enhanced, while the ferromagnetic stability was maintained. Moreover, we found that the compressive strain can reverse the spin polarization of electrons at the conduction band minimum, so that two categories of half-metal can be induced by controlling electrostatic doping in the bilayer Cr2Ge2Te6. These results should shed a light on achieving ferromagnetic stability for low-dimensional materials.

Cr2Ge2Te6 is an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor with van der Waals type layered structure, thus represents a promising material for novel electronic and spintronic devices. Here we combine scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calc ulations to investigate the electronic structure of Cr2Ge2Te6. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals a surprising large energy level shift and change of energy gap size across the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition, as well as a peculiar double-peak electronic state on the Cr-site defect. These features can be quantitatively explained by density functional theory calculations, which uncover a close relationship between the electronic structure and magnetic order. These findings shed important new lights on the microscopic electronic structure and origin of magnetic order in Cr2Ge2Te6.
Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, has attracted a great deal of interest recently owing to its potential for integration with Dirac materials to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and to develop novel spintronics devic es. Here, we study the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of single-crystalline CGT and determine that the magnetic easy axis is directed along the c-axis in its ferromagnetic phase. In addition, CGT is an insulator below the Curie temperature. These properties make CGT a potentially promising candidate substrate for integration with topological insulators for the realization of the high-temperature QAHE.

We report on the spectroscopic observation of a quantized electronic fine structure near the Fermi energy in thin Fe films grown on W(110). The quantum well states are detected down to binding energies of $sim$10 meV by angle-resolved photoelectron s pectroscopy. The band dispersion of these states is found to feature a pronounced anisotropy within the surface plane: It is free-electron like along the $bar{Gamma rm{H}}$-direction while it becomes heavy along $bar{Gamma rm{N}}$. Density functional theory calculations identify the observed states to have both majority and minority spin character and indicate that the large anisotropy can be dependent on the number of Fe-layers and coupling to the substrate.
We report the anisotropic changes in the electronic structure of a Kondo semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ across an anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering temperature ($T_0$) of 29 K, using optical conductivity spectra. The spectra along the $a$- and $c $-axes indicate that a $c$-$f$ hybridization gap emerges from a higher temperature continuously across $T_0$. Along the b-axis, on the other hand, a different energy gap with a peak at 20 meV appears below 39 K, which is higher temperature than $T_0$, because of structural distortion. The onset of the energy gap becomes visible below $T_0$. Our observation reveals that the electronic structure as well as the energy gap opening along the b-axis due to the structural distortion induces antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_0$.
We carefully investigated the ferromagnetic coupling in the as-grown and annealed ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs/AlGaMnAs bilayer devices. We observed that the magnetic interaction between the two layers strongly affects the magnetoresistance of the GaMnAs layer with applying out of plane magnetic field. After low temperature annealing, the magnetic easy axis of the AlGaMnAs layer switches from out of plane into in-plane and the interlayer coupling efficiency is reduced from up to 0.6 to less than 0.4. However, the magnetic coupling penetration depth for the annealed device is twice that of the as-grown bilayer device.
