Prethermalization, by introducing emergent quasiconserved observables, plays a crucial role in protecting Floquet many-body phases over exponentially long time, while the ultimate fate of such quasiconserved operators can signal thermalization to infinite temperature. To elucidate the properties of prethermal quasiconservation in many-body Floquet systems, here we systematically analyze infinite temperature correlations between observables. We numerically show that the late-time behavior of the autocorrelations unambiguously distinguishes quasiconserved observables from non-conserved ones, allowing to single out a set of linearly-independent quasiconserved observables. By investigating two Floquet spin models, we identify two different mechanism underlying the quasi-conservation law. First, we numerically verify energy quasiconservation when the driving frequency is large, so that the system dynamics is approximately described by a static prethermal Hamiltonian. More interestingly, under moderate driving frequency, another quasiconserved observable can still persist if the Floquet driving contains a large global rotation. We show theoretically how to calculate this conserved observable and provide numerical verification. Having systematically identified all quasiconserved observables, we can finally investigate their behavior in the infinite-time limit and thermodynamic limit, using autocorrelations obtained from both numerical simulation and experiments in solid state nuclear magnetic resonance systems.

We develop a flow renormalization approach for periodically-driven quantum systems, which reveals prethermal dynamical regimes and associated timescales via direct correspondence between real time and flow time behavior. In this formalism, the dynami cal problem is recast in terms of coupling constants of the theory flowing towards an attractive fixed point that represents the thermal Floquet Hamiltonian at long times, while narrowly avoiding a series of unstable fixed points which determine distinct prethermal regimes at intermediate times. We study a class of relevant perturbations that trigger the onset of heating and thermalization, and demonstrate that the renormalization flow has an elegant representation in terms of a flow of matrix product operators. Our results permit microscopic calculations of the emergence of distinct dynamical regimes directly in the thermodynamic limit in an efficient manner, establishing a new computational tool for driven non-equilibrium systems.

The Floquet Hamiltonian has often been used to describe a time-periodic system. Nevertheless, because the Floquet Hamiltonian depends on a micro-motion parameter, the Floquet Hamiltonian with a fixed micro-motion parameter cannot faithfully represent a driven system, which manifests as the anomalous edge states. Here we show that an accurate description of a Floquet system requires a set of Hamiltonian exhausting all values of the micro-motion parameter, and this micro-motion parameter can be viewed as an extra synthetic dimension of the system. Therefore, we show that a $d$-dimensional Floquet system can be described by a $d+1$-dimensional static Hamiltonian, and the advantage of this representation is that the periodic boundary condition is automatically imposed along the extra-dimension, which enables a straightforward definition of topological invariants. The topological invariant in the $d+1$-dimensional system can ensure a $d-1$-dimensional edge state of the $d$-dimensional Floquet system. Here we show two examples where the topological invariant is a three-dimensional Hopf invariant. We highlight that our scheme of classifying Floquet topology on the micro-motion space is different from the previous classification of Floquet topology on the time space.
Periodically driven Floquet quantum systems provide a promising platform to investigate novel physics out of equilibrium. Unfortunately, the drive generically heats up the system to a featureless infinite temperature state. For large driving frequenc y, the heat absorption rate is predicted to be exponentially small, giving rise to a long-lived prethermal regime which exhibits all the intriguing properties of Floquet systems. Here we experimentally observe Floquet prethermalization using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. We first show the relaxation of a far-from-equilibrium initial state to a long-lived prethermal state, well described by the time-independent prethermal Hamiltonian. By measuring the autocorrelation of this prethermal Hamiltonian we can further experimentally confirm the predicted exponentially slow heating rate. More strikingly, we find that in the timescale when the effective Hamiltonian picture breaks down, the Floquet system still possesses other quasi-conservation laws. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to realize robust Floquet engineering, thus enabling the experimental observation of non-trivial Floquet phases of matter.

An open quantum system, whose time evolution is governed by a master equation, can be driven into a given pure quantum state by an appropriate design of the system-reservoir coupling. This points out a route towards preparing many body states and non -equilibrium quantum phases by quantum reservoir engineering. Here we discuss in detail the example of a emph{driven dissipative Bose Einstein Condensate} of bosons and of paired fermions, where atoms in an optical lattice are coupled to a bath of Bogoliubov excitations via the atomic current representing emph{local dissipation}. In the absence of interactions the lattice gas is driven into a pure state with long range order. Weak interactions lead to a weakly mixed state, which in 3D can be understood as a depletion of the condensate, and in 1D and 2D exhibits properties reminiscent of a Luttinger liquid or a Kosterlitz-Thouless critical phase at finite temperature, with the role of the ``finite temperature played by the interactions.
The use of periodic driving for synthesizing many-body quantum states depends crucially on the existence of a prethermal regime, which exhibits drive-tunable properties while forestalling the effects of heating. This motivates the search for direct e xperimental probes of the underlying localized nonergodic nature of the wave function in this metastable regime. We report experiments on a many-body Floquet system consisting of atoms in an optical lattice subjected to ultrastrong sign-changing amplitude modulation. Using a double-quench protocol we measure an inverse participation ratio quantifying the degree of prethermal localization as a function of tunable drive parameters and interactions. We obtain a complete prethermal map of the drive-dependent properties of Floquet matter spanning four square decades of parameter space. Following the full time evolution, we observe sequential formation of two prethermal plateaux, interaction-driven ergodicity, and strongly frequency-dependent dynamics of long-time thermalization. The quantitative characterization of the prethermal Floquet matter realized in these experiments, along with the demonstration of control of its properties by variation of drive parameters and interactions, opens a new frontier for probing far-from-equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics and new possibilities for dynamical quantum engineering.
