We propose four hybrid combiner/precoder for downlink mmWave massive MU-MIMO systems. The design of a hybrid combiner/precoder is divided in two parts, analog and digital. The system baseband model shows that the signal processed by the mobile station can be interpreted as a received signal in the presence of colored Gaussian noise, therefore, since the digital part of the combiner and precoder do not have constraints for their generation, their designs can be based on any traditional signal processing that takes into account this kind of noise. To the best of our knowledge, this was not considered by previous works. A more realistic and appropriate design is described in this paper. Also, the approaches adopted in the literature for the designing of the combiner/precoder analog parts do not try to avoid or even reduce the inter user/symbol interference, they concentrate on increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We propose a simple solution that decreases the interference while maintaining large SNR. In addition, one of the proposed hybrid combiners reaches the maximum value of our objective function according with the Hadamards inequality. Numerical results illustrate the BER performance improvements resulting from our proposals. In addition, a simple detection approach can be used for data estimation without significant performance loss.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has recently appeared as a powerful and robust multiple access and interference management strategy for downlink Multi-user (MU) multi-antenna communications. In this work, we study the precoder design problem fo r RSMA scheme in downlink MU systems with both perfect and imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and assess the role and benefits of transmitting multiple common streams. Unlike existing works which have considered single-antenna receivers (Multiple-Input Single-Output--MISO), we propose and extend the RSMA framework for multi-antenna receivers (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output--MIMO) and formulate the precoder optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the Weighted Ergodic Sum-Rate (WESR). Precoder optimization is solved using Sample Average Approximation (SAA) together with the proposed vectorization and Weighted Minimum Mean Square Error (WMMSE) based approach. Achievable sum-Degree of Freedom (DoF) of RSMA is derived for the proposed framework as an increasing function of the number of transmitted common and private streams, which is further validated by the Ergodic Sum Rate (ESR) performance using Monte Carlo simulations. Conventional MU-MIMO based on linear precoders and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) schemes are considered as baselines. Numerical results show that with imperfect CSIT, the sum-DoF and ESR performance of RSMA is superior than that of the two baselines, and is increasing with the number of transmitted common streams. Moreover, by better managing the interference, RSMA not only has significant ESR gains over baseline schemes but is more robust to CSIT inaccuracies, network loads and user deployments.
We address the problem of analyzing and classifying in groups the downlink channel environment in a millimeter-wavelength cell, accounting for path loss, multipath fading, and User Equipment (UE) blocking, by employing a hybrid propagation and multip ath fading model, thus using accurate inter-group interference modeling. The base station (BS) employs a large Uniform Planar Array (UPA) to facilitate massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) communications with high efficiency. UEs are equipped with a single antenna and are distributed uniformly within the cell. The key problem is analyzing and defining groups toward precoding. Because equitable type of throughput is desired between groups, Combined Frequency and Spatial Division and Multiplexing (CFSDM) prevails as necessary. We show that by employing three subcarrier frequencies, the UEs can be efficiently separated into high throughput groups, with each group employing Virtual Channel Model Beams (VCMB) based inner precoding, followed by efficient Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) outer precoders. For each group, we study three different sub-grouping methods offering different advantages. We show that the improvement offered by Zero-Forcing Per-Group Precoding (ZF-PGP) over Zero-Forcing Precoding (ZFP) is very high.
Hybrid analog-digital (A/D) transceivers designed for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have received substantial research attention, as a benefit of their lower cost and modest energy consumption compared to their fully-digital counterparts. We furth er improve their performance by conceiving a Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) based nonlinear joint design for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mmWave systems. Our optimization criterion is that of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the system under channel uncertainties subject both to realistic transmit power constraint and to the unit modulus constraint imposed on the elements of the analog beamforming (BF) matrices governing the BF operation in the radio frequency domain. We transform this optimization problem into a more tractable form and develop an efficient block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm for solving it. Then, a novel two-timescale nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithm is developed, which can be viewed as an extension of the BCD-based joint design algorithm for reducing both the channel state information (CSI) signalling overhead and the effects of outdated CSI. Moreover, we determine the near-optimal cancellation order for the THP structure based on the lower bound of the MSE. The proposed algorithms can be guaranteed to converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution of the original problem. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed nonlinear joint hybrid transceiver design algorithms significantly outperform the existing linear hybrid transceiver algorithms and approach the performance of the fully-digital transceiver, despite its lower cost and power dissipation.
Large intelligent surface (LIS) has recently emerged as a potential low-cost solution to reshape the wireless propagation environment for improving the spectral efficiency. In this paper, we consider a downlink millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input -multiple-output (MIMO) system, where an LIS is deployed to assist the downlink data transmission from a base station (BS) to a user equipment (UE). Both the BS and the UE are equipped with a large number of antennas, and a hybrid analog/digital precoding/combining structure is used to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption. We aim to maximize the spectral efficiency by jointly optimizing the LISs reflection coefficients and the hybrid precoder (combiner) at the BS (UE). To tackle this non-convex problem, we reformulate the complex optimization problem into a much more friendly optimization problem by exploiting the inherent structure of the effective (cascade) mmWave channel. A manifold optimization (MO)-based algorithm is then developed. Simulation results show that by carefully devising LISs reflection coefficients, our proposed method can help realize a favorable propagation environment with a small channel matrix condition number. Besides, it can achieve a performance comparable to those of state-of-the-art algorithms, while at a much lower computational complexity.
We introduce a framework for linear precoder design over a massive multiple-input multiple-output downlink system and in presence of nonlinear power amplifiers (PAs). By studying the spatial characteristics of the distortion, we demonstrate that conv entional linear precoding techniques steer nonlinear distortions in the direction of the users. We show that, by taking into account PA nonlinearity characteristics, one can design linear precoders that reduce, and in single-user scenarios, even remove completely the distortion transmitted in the direction of the users. This, however, is achieved at the price of a considerably reduced array gain. To address this issue, we present precoder optimization algorithms which simultaneously take into account the effects of array gain, distortion, multiuser interference, and receiver noise. Specifically, we derive an expression for the achievable sum rate and propose an iterative algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix maximizing this expression. Moreover, using a model for PA power consumption, we propose an algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix minimizing the consumed power for a given minimum achievable sum rate. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed distortion-aware precoding techniques yield considerable improvements in terms of spectral and energy efficiency compared to conventional linear precoding techniques.
