We investigate the electron states and optical absorption in square- and hexagonal-shaped two-dimensional (2D) HgTe quantum dots and quantum rings in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The electronic structure is modeled by means of the $sp^3d^5s^*$ tight-binding method within the nearest-neighbor approximation. Both bulklike and edge states appear in the energy spectrum. The bulklike states in quantum rings exhibit Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in magnetic field, whereas no such oscillations are found in quantum dots, which is ascribed to the different topology of the two systems. When magnetic field varies, all the edge states in square quantum dots appear as quasibands composed of almost fully flat levels, whereas some edge states in quantum rings are found to oscillate with magnetic field. However, the edge states in hexagonal quantum dots are localized like in rings. The absorption spectra of all the structures consist of numerous absorption lines, which substantially overlap even for small line broadening. The absorption lines in the infrared are found to originate from transitions between edge states. It is shown that the magnetic field can be used to efficiently tune the optical absorption of HgTe 2D quantum dot and quantum ring systems.

While the dynamics for three-dimensional axially symmetric two-electron quantum dots with parabolic confinement potentials is in general non-separable we have found an exact separability with three quantum numbers for specific values of the magnetic field. Furthermore, it is shown that the magnetic properties such as the magnetic moment and the susceptibility are sensitive to the presence and strength of a vertical confinement. Using a semiclassical approach the calculation of the eigenvalues reduces to simple quadratures providing a transparent and almost analytical quantization of the quantum dot energy levels which differ from the exact energies only by a few percent.
We investigate experimentally and theoretically the temporal evolution of the spin of the conduction band electron and that of the valence band heavy hole, both confined in the same semiconductor quantum dot. In particular, the coherence of the spin purity in the limit of a weak externally applied magnetic field, comparable in strength to the Overhauser field due to fluctuations in the surrounding nuclei spins. We use an all-optical pulse technique to measure the spin evolution as a function of time after its initialization. We show for the first time that the spin purity performs complex temporal oscillations which we quantitatively simulate using a central spin model. Our model encompasses the Zeeman and the hyperfine interactions between the spin and the external and Overhauser fields, respectively. Our novel studies are essential for the design and optimization of quantum-dot-based entangled multi-photon sources. Specifically, cluster and graph states, which set stringent limitations on the magnitude of the externally applied field.

We study the effect of magnetic field on the properties of a high mobility gated two-dimensional electron gas in a field effect transistor with the Hall bar geometry. When approaching the current saturation when the drain side of the channel becomes strongly depleted, we see a number of unusual effects related to the magnetic field induced re-distribution of the electron density in the conducting channel. The experimental results obtained in the non-linear regime have been interpreted based on the results obtained in the linear regime by a simple theoretical model, which describes quite well our observations.
We have experimentally investigated the hole states in a gated vertical strained Si/SiGe quantum dot. We demonstrate the inhomogeneous strain relaxation on the lateral surface creates a ring-like potential near the perimeter of the dot, which can con fine hole states exhibiting quantum ring characteristics. The magnetotunneling spectroscopy exhibits the predicted periodicity of energy states in phi/phi0, but the magnitude of the energy shifts is larger than predicted by simple ring theory. Our results suggest a new way to fabricate and study quantum ring structures.
The two-dimensional topological insulator phase has been observed previously in single HgTe-based quantum wells with inverted subband ordering. In double quantum wells (DQWs), coupling between the layers introduces additional degrees of freedom leadi ng to a rich phase picture. By studying local and nonlocal resistance in HgTe-based DQWs, we observe both the gapless semimetal phase and the topological insulator phase, depending on parameters of the samples and according to theoretical predictions. Our work establishes the DQWs as a promising platform for realization of multilayer topological insulators.
