Polymerization and formation of crosslinked polymer networks are important processes in manufacturing, materials fabrication, and in the case of hydrated polymer networks, synthesis of biomedical materials, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. While considerable research has been devoted to the modeling of polymer networks to determine averaged, mean-field, global properties, there are fewer studies that specifically examine the variance of the composition across micro-regions (composed of a large, but finite, number of polymer network strands) within the larger polymer network. Here, we mathematically model the stochastic formation of polymer networks comprised of linear homobifunctional network strands that undergo an end-linking gelation process. We introduce a master equation that describes the evolution of the probabilities of possible network micro-region configurations as a function of time and extent of reaction. We specifically focus on the dynamics of network formation and the statistical variability of the gel micro-regions, particularly at intermediate extents of reaction. We also consider possible annealing effects and study how cooperative binding between the two end-groups on a single network-strand affects network formation. Our results allow for a more detailed and thorough understanding of polymer network dynamics and variability of network properties.

We analyse the dynamics of polymer translocation in the strong force regime by recasting the problem into solving a differential equation with a moving absorbing boundary. For the total translocation time, $tau_{rm tr}$, our simple mean-field model p redicts that $tau_{rm tr}sim$ (number of monomers)$^{1.5}$, which is in agreement with the exponent found in previous simulation results. Our model also predicts intricate dependencies of $tau_{rm tr}$ on the variations of the pulling force and of the temperature.

We present a numerical study of the slip link model introduced by Likhtman for describing the dy- namics of dense polymer melts. After reviewing the technical aspects associated with the implemen- tation of the model, we extend previous work in sever al directions. The dependence of the relaxation modulus with the slip link density and the slip link stiffness is reported. Then the nonlinear rheolog- ical properties of the model, for a particular set of parameters, are explored. Finally, we introduce excluded volume interactions in a mean field such as manner in order to describe inhomogeneous systems, and we apply this description to a simple nanocomposite model. With this extension, the slip link model appears as a simple and generic model of a polymer melt, that can be used as an alternative to molecular dynamics for coarse grained simulations of complex polymeric systems.
Structure of polymer electrolytes membranes, e.g., Nafion, inside fuel cell catalyst layers has significant impact on the electrochemical activity and transport phenomena that determine cell performance. In those regions, Nafion can be found as an ul tra-thin film, coating the catalyst and the catalyst support surfaces. The impact of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of these surfaces on the structural formation of the films and, in turn, on transport properties, has not been sufficiently explored yet. Here, we report about classical Molecular Dynamics simulations of hydrated Nafion thin-films in contact with unstructured supports, characterized by their global wetting properties only. We have investigated structure and transport in different regions of the film and found evidences of strongly heterogeneous behavior. We speculate about the implications of our work on experimental and technological activity.
We consider a polymer brush grafted to a surface (acting as an electrode) and bearing a charged group at its free end. Using a second distant electrode, the brush is subject to a constant electric field. Based on a coarse-grained continuum model, we calculate the average brush height and find that the brush can stretch or compress depending on the applied field and charge end-group. We further look at an undulation mode of the flat polymer brush and find that the electrostatic energy scales linearly with the undulation wavenumber, $q$. Competition with surface tension, scaling as $q^2$, tends to stabilize a lateral $q$-mode of the polymer brush with a well-defined wavelength. This wavelength depends on the brush height, surface separation, and several system parameters.
We present the first experimental study on the simultaneous capillary instability amongst viscous concentric rings suspended atop an immiscible medium. The rings ruptured upon annealing, with three types of phase correlation between neighboring rings . In the case of weak substrate confinement, the rings ruptured independently when they were sparsely distanced, but via an out-of-phase mode when packed closer. If the substrate confinement was strong, the rings would rupture via an in-phase mode, resulting in radially aligned droplets. The concentric ring geometry caused a competition between the phase correlation of neighboring rings and the kinetically favorable wavelength, yielding an intriguing, recursive surface pattern. This frustrated pattern formation behavior was accounted for by a scaling analysis.
