Psychological studies have found that human visual tracking system involves learning, memory, and planning. Despite recent successes, not many works have focused on memory and planning in deep learning based tracking. We are thus interested in memory augmented network, where an external memory remembers the evolving appearance of the target (foreground) object without backpropagation for updating weights. Our Dual Augmented Memory Network (DAWN) is unique in remembering both target and background, and using an improved attention LSTM memory to guide the focus on memorized features. DAWN is effective in unsupervised tracking in handling total occlusion, severe motion blur, abrupt changes in target appearance, multiple object instances, and similar foreground and background features. We present extensive quantitative and qualitative experimental comparison with state-of-the-art methods including top contenders in recent VOT challenges. Notably, despite the straightforward implementation, DAWN is ranked third in both VOT2016 and VOT2017 challenges with excellent success rate among all VOT fast trackers running at fps > 10 in unsupervised tracking in both challenges. We propose DAWN-RPN, where we simply augment our memory and attention LSTM modules to the state-of-the-art SiamRPN, and report immediate performance gain, thus demonstrating DAWN can work well with and directly benefit other models to handle difficult cases as well.

Video object detection is a tough task due to the deteriorated quality of video sequences captured under complex environments. Currently, this area is dominated by a series of feature enhancement based methods, which distill beneficial semantic infor mation from multiple frames and generate enhanced features through fusing the distilled information. However, the distillation and fusion operations are usually performed at either frame level or instance level with external guidance using additional information, such as optical flow and feature memory. In this work, we propose a dual semantic fusion network (abbreviated as DSFNet) to fully exploit both frame-level and instance-level semantics in a unified fusion framework without external guidance. Moreover, we introduce a geometric similarity measure into the fusion process to alleviate the influence of information distortion caused by noise. As a result, the proposed DSFNet can generate more robust features through the multi-granularity fusion and avoid being affected by the instability of external guidance. To evaluate the proposed DSFNet, we conduct extensive experiments on the ImageNet VID dataset. Notably, the proposed dual semantic fusion network achieves, to the best of our knowledge, the best performance of 84.1% mAP among the current state-of-the-art video object detectors with ResNet-101 and 85.4% mAP with ResNeXt-101 without using any post-processing steps.
Recently, several Space-Time Memory based networks have shown that the object cues (e.g. video frames as well as the segmented object masks) from the past frames are useful for segmenting objects in the current frame. However, these methods exploit t he information from the memory by global-to-global matching between the current and past frames, which lead to mismatching to similar objects and high computational complexity. To address these problems, we propose a novel local-to-local matching solution for semi-supervised VOS, namely Regional Memory Network (RMNet). In RMNet, the precise regional memory is constructed by memorizing local regions where the target objects appear in the past frames. For the current query frame, the query regions are tracked and predicted based on the optical flow estimated from the previous frame. The proposed local-to-local matching effectively alleviates the ambiguity of similar objects in both memory and query frames, which allows the information to be passed from the regional memory to the query region efficiently and effectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed RMNet performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods on the DAVIS and YouTube-VOS datasets.
In this paper, we propose a novel video super-resolution method that aims at generating high-fidelity high-resolution (HR) videos from low-resolution (LR) ones. Previous methods predominantly leverage temporal neighbor frames to assist the super-reso lution of the current frame. Those methods achieve limited performance as they suffer from the challenge in spatial frame alignment and the lack of useful information from similar LR neighbor frames. In contrast, we devise a cross-frame non-local attention mechanism that allows video super-resolution without frame alignment, leading to be more robust to large motions in the video. In addition, to acquire the information beyond neighbor frames, we design a novel memory-augmented attention module to memorize general video details during the super-resolution training. Experimental results indicate that our method can achieve superior performance on large motion videos comparing to the state-of-the-art methods without aligning frames. Our source code will be released.
Perceiving the world in terms of objects and tracking them through time is a crucial prerequisite for reasoning and scene understanding. Recently, several methods have been proposed for unsupervised learning of object-centric representations. However , since these models were evaluated on different downstream tasks, it remains unclear how they compare in terms of basic perceptual abilities such as detection, figure-ground segmentation and tracking of objects. To close this gap, we design a benchmark with four data sets of varying complexity and seven additional test sets featuring challenging tracking scenarios relevant for natural videos. Using this benchmark, we compare the perceptual abilities of four object-centric approaches: ViMON, a video-extension of MONet, based on recurrent spatial attention, OP3, which exploits clustering via spatial mixture models, as well as TBA and SCALOR, which use explicit factorization via spatial transformers. Our results suggest that the architectures with unconstrained latent representations learn more powerful representations in terms of object detection, segmentation and tracking than the spatial transformer based architectures. We also observe that none of the methods are able to gracefully handle the most challenging tracking scenarios despite their synthetic nature, suggesting that our benchmark may provide fruitful guidance towards learning more robust object-centric video representations.
Recently, people tried to use a few anomalies for video anomaly detection (VAD) instead of only normal data during the training process. A side effect of data imbalance occurs when a few abnormal data face a vast number of normal data. The latest VAD works use triplet loss or data re-sampling strategy to lessen this problem. However, there is still no elaborately designed structure for discriminative VAD with a few anomalies. In this paper, we propose a DiscRiminative-gEnerative duAl Memory (DREAM) anomaly detection model to take advantage of a few anomalies and solve data imbalance. We use two shallow discriminators to tighten the normal feature distribution boundary along with a generator for the next frame prediction. Further, we propose a dual memory module to obtain a sparse feature representation in both normality and abnormality space. As a result, DREAM not only solves the data imbalance problem but also learn a reasonable feature space. Further theoretical analysis shows that our DREAM also works for the unknown anomalies. Comparing with the previous methods on UCSD Ped1, UCSD Ped2, CUHK Avenue, and ShanghaiTech, our model outperforms all the baselines with no extra parameters. The ablation study demonstrates the effectiveness of our dual memory module and discriminative-generative network.
