In this work, we describe a simple finite element approach that is able to resolve weak discontinuities in interface problems accurately. The approach is based on a fixed patch mesh consisting of quadrilaterals, that will stay unchanged independent of the position of the interface. Inside the patches we refine once more, either in eight triangles or in four quadrilaterals, in such a way that the interface is locally resolved. The resulting finite element approach can be considered a fitted finite element approach. In our practical implementation, we do not construct this fitted mesh, however. Instead, the local degrees of freedom are included in a parametric way in the finite element space, or to be more precise in the local mappings between a reference patch and the physical patches. We describe the implementation in the open source C++ finite element library deal.II in detail and present two numerical examples to illustrate the performance of the approach. Finally, detailed studies of the behavior of iterative linear solvers complement this work.

The locally modified finite element method, which is introduced in [Frei, Richter: SINUM 52(2014), p. 2315-2334] is a simple fitted finite element method that is able to resolve weak discontinuities in interface problems. The method is based on a fix ed structured coarse mesh, which is then refined into sub-elements to resolve an interior interface. In this work, we extend the locally modified finite element method to second order using an isoparametric approach in the interface elements. Thereby we need to take care that the resulting curved edges do not lead to degenerate sub-elements. We prove optimal a priori error estimates in the $L^2$-norm and in a modified energy norm, as well as a reduced convergence order of ${cal O}(h^{3/2})$ in the standard $H^1$-norm. Finally, we present numerical examples to substantiate the theoretical findings.

An $hp$ version of interface penalty finite element method ($hp$-IPFEM) is proposed for elliptic interface problems in two and three dimensions on unfitted meshes. Error estimates in broken $H^1$ norm, which are optimal with respect to $h$ and subopt imal with respect to $p$ by half an order of $p$, are derived. Both symmetric and non-symmetric IPFEM are considered. Error estimates in $L^2$ norm are proved by the duality argument.
In this paper, a stabilized extended finite element method is proposed for Stokes interface problems on unfitted triangulation elements which do not require the interface align with the triangulation. The velocity solution and pressure solution on ea ch side of the interface are separately expanded in the standard nonconforming piecewise linear polynomials and the piecewise constant polynomials, respectively. Harmonic weighted fluxes and arithmetic fluxes are used across the interface and cut edges (segment of the edges cut by the interface), respectively. Extra stabilization terms involving velocity and pressure are added to ensure the stable inf-sup condition. We show a priori error estimates under additional regularity hypothesis. Moreover, the errors {in energy and $L^2$ norms for velocity and the error in $L^2$ norm for pressure} are robust with respect to the viscosity {and independent of the location of the interface}. Results of numerical experiments are presented to {support} the theoretical analysis.
The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is a semi-analytical computational scheme, which is based on the characteristics of the finite element method (FEM) and combines the advantages of the boundary element method (BEM). This paper integra tes the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) and the polygonal mesh technique into a new approach to solving the steady-state and transient seepage problems. The proposed method is implemented in Abaqus using a user-defined element (UEL). The detailed implementations of the procedure, defining the UEL element, updating the RHS and AMATRX, and solving the stiffness/mass matrix by the eigenvalue decomposition are presented. Several benchmark problems from seepage are solved to validate the proposed implementation. Results show that the polygonal element of PS-SBFEM has a higher accuracy rate than the standard FEM element in the same element size. For the transient problems, the results between PS-SBFEM and the FEM are in excellent agreement. Furthermore, the PS-SBFEM with quadtree meshes shows a good effect for solving complex geometric in the seepage problem. Hence, the proposed method is robust accurate for solving the steady-state and transient seepage problems. The developed UEL source code and the associated input files can be downloaded from https://github.com/yangyLab/PS-SBFEM.

We design an adaptive unfitted finite element method on the Cartesian mesh with hanging nodes. We derive an hp-reliable and efficient residual type a posteriori error estimate on K-meshes. A key ingredient is a novel hp-domain inverse estimate which allows us to prove the stability of the finite element method under practical interface resolving mesh conditions and also prove the lower bound of the hp a posteriori error estimate. Numerical examples are included.
