By using the Hectospec 6.5 m Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) and the 2.16 m telescope of National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), we obtained 188 high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) spectra of HII regions in the nearby galaxy M101, which are the largest spectroscopic sample of HII regions for this galaxy so far. These spectra cover a wide range of regions on M101, which enables us to analyze two dimensional distributions of its physical properties. The physical parameters are derived from emission lines or stellar continuum, including stellar population age, electron temperature, oxygen abundance and etc. The oxygen abundances are derived using two empirical methods based on O3N2 and R$_{23}$ indicators, as well as the direct Te method when OIII$lambda4363$ is available. By applying the harmonic decomposition analysis to the velocity field, we obtained line-of-sight rotation velocity of 71 km s$^{-1}$ and a position angle of 36 degree. The stellar age profile shows an old stellar population in galaxy center and a relative young stellar population in outer regions, suggesting an old bulge and a young disk. Oxygen abundance profile exhibits a clear break at $sim$18 kpc, with a gradient of $-$0.0364 dex kpc$^{-1}$ in the inner region and $-$0.00686 dex kpc$^{-1}$ in the outer region. Our results agree with the inside-out disk growth scenario of M101.

We present spectral line mapping observations toward four massive star-forming regions (Cepheus A, DR21S, S76E and G34.26+0.15), with the IRAM 30 meter telescope at 2 mm and 3 mm bands. Totally 396 spectral lines from 51 molecules, one helium recombi nation line, ten hydrogen recombination lines, and 16 unidentified lines were detected in these four sources. An emission line of nitrosyl cyanide (ONCN, 14$_{0,14}$-13$_{0,13}$) was detected in G34.26+0.15, as first detection in massive star-forming regions. We found that the $c$-C$_{3}$H$_{2}$ and NH$_{2}$D show enhancement in shocked regions as suggested by evidences of SiO and/or SO emission. Column density and rotational temperature of CH$_{3}$CN were estimated with the rotational diagram method for all four sources. Isotope abundance ratios of $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C were derived using HC$_{3}$N and its $^{13}$C isotopologue, which were around 40 in all four massive star-forming regions and slightly lower than the local interstellar value ($sim$65). $^{14}$N/$^{15}$N and $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O abundance ratios in these sources were also derived using double isotopic method, which were slightly lower than that in local interstellar medium. Except for Cep A, $^{33}$S/$^{34}$S ratio in the other three targets were derived, which were similar to that in the local interstellar medium. The column density ratios of N(DCN)/N(HCN) and N(DCO$^{+}$)/N(HCO$^{+}$) in these sources were more than two orders of magnitude higher than the elemental [D]/[H] ratio, which is 1.5$times$10$ ^{-5}$. Our results show the later stage sources, G34.26+0.15 in particular, present more molecular species than earlier stage ones. Evidence of shock activity is seen in all stages studied.
The conversion of the IR emission into star formation rate can be strongly dependent on the physical properties of the dust, which are affected by the environmental conditions where the dust is embedded. We study here the dust properties of a set of HII regions in the Local Group Galaxy M33 presenting different spatial configurations between the stars, gas and dust to understand the dust evolution under different environments. We model the SED of each region using the DustEM tool and obtain the mass relative to hydrogen for Very Small Grains (YVSG), Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (YPAH) and Big Grains (YBG). The relative mass of the VSGs (YVSG/YTOT) is a factor of 1.7 higher for HII regions classified as filled and mixed than for regions presenting a shell structure. The enhancement of VSGs within NGC 604 and NGC 595 is correlated to expansive gas structures with velocities greater than 50 km/s. The gas-to-dust ratio derived for the HII regions in our sample exhibits two regimes related to the HI-H2 transition of the ISM. Regions corresponding to the HI diffuse regime present a gas-to-dust ratio compatible with the expected value if we assume that the gas-to-dust ratio scales linearly with metallicity, while regions corresponding to a H2 molecular phase present a flatter dust-gas surface density distribution. The fraction of VSGs can be affected by the conditions of the interstellar environment: strong shocks of 50-90 km/s existing in the interior of the most luminous HII regions can lead to fragmentation of BGs into smaller ones, while the more evolved shell and clear shell objects provide a more quiescent environment where reformation of dust BG grains might occur. The gas-to-dust variations found in this analysis might imply that grain coagulation and/or gas-phase metals incorporation to the dust mass is occurring in the interior of the HII regions in M33.

(Abridged) We have obtained HST WFPC2 observations of three very luminous but morphologically different giant HII regions (GHRs) in M101, NGC5461, NGC5462, and NGC5471, in order to study cluster formation in GHRs. The measured (M_F547M - M_F675W) col ors and M_F547M magnitudes are used to determine the ages and masses of the cluster candidates with M_F547M <= -9.0. NGC5461 is dominated by a very luminous core, and has been suggested to host a super-star cluster (SSC). Our observations show that it contains three R136-class clusters superposed on a bright stellar background in a small region. This tight group of clusters may dynamically evolve into an SSC in the future, and may appear unresolved and be identified as an SSC at large distances, but at present NGC5461 has no SSCs. NGC5462 has loosely distributed HII regions and clusters without a prominent core. It has the largest number of cluster candidates among the three GHRs, but most of them are faint and older than 10 Myr. NGC5471 has multiple bright HII regions, and contains a large number of faint clusters younger than 5 Myr. Two of the clusters in NGC5471 are older than R136, but just as luminous; they may be the most massive clusters in the three GHRs. The fraction of stars formed in massive clusters is estimated from the clusters contribution to the total stellar continuum emission and a comparison of the ionizing power of the clusters to the ionizing requirement of the associated HII regions. Both estimates show that <~ 50% of massive stars are formed in massive clusters. The cluster luminosity functions (CLFs) of the three GHRs show different slopes. NGC5462 has the steepest CLF and the most loosely distributed interstellar gas, qualitatively consistent with the hypothesis that massive clusters are formed in high-pressure interstellar environments.
Context. The derived physical parameters for young HII regions are normally determined assuming the emission region to be optically thin. However, this assumption is unlikely to hold for young HII regions such as hyper-compact HII(HCHII) and ultra-co mpact HII(UCHII) regions and leads to the underestimation of their properties. This can be overcome by fitting the SEDs over a wide range of radio frequencies. Aims. The two primary goals of this study are (1) to determine the physical properties of young HII regions from radio SEDs in the search for potential HCHII regions, and (2) to use these physical properties to investigate their evolution. Method. We used the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to observe the X-band and K-band with angular resolutions of ~1.7 and ~0.7, respectively, toward 114 HII regions with rising-spectra between 1-5 GHz. We complement our observations with VLA archival data and construct SEDs in the range of 1-26 GHz and model them assuming an ionization-bounded HII region with uniform density. Results. Our sample has a mean electron density of ne=1.6E4cm^{-3}, diameter diam=0.14pc, and emission measure EM = 1.9E7pc*cm^{-6}. We identify 16 HCHII region candidates and 8 intermediate objects between the classes of HCHII and UCHII regions. The ne, diam, and EM change as expected, but the Lyman continuum flux is relatively constant over time. We find that about 67% of Lyman-continuum photons are absorbed by dust within these HII regions and the dust absorption fraction tends to be more significant for more compact and younger HII regions. Conclusion. Young HII regions are commonly located in dusty clumps; HCHII regions and intermediate objects are often associated with various masers, outflows, broad radio recombination lines, and extended green objects, and the accretion at the two stages tends to be quickly reduced or halted.
