Metallic vanadium disulfide nanosheets as a platform material for multifunctional electrode applications

Nano-thick metallic transition metal dichalcogenides such as VS$_{2}$ are essential building blocks for constructing next-generation electronic and energy-storage applications, as well as for exploring unique physical issues associated with the dimensionality effect. However, such 2D layered materials have yet to be achieved through either mechanical exfoliation or bottom-up synthesis. Herein, we report a facile chemical vapor deposition route for direct production of crystalline VS$_{2}$ nanosheets with sub-10 nm thicknesses and domain sizes of tens of micrometers. The obtained nanosheets feature spontaneous superlattice periodicities and excellent electrical conductivities (~3$times$10$^{3}$ S cm$^{-1}$), which has enabled a variety of applications such as contact electrodes for monolayer MoS$_{2}$ with contact resistances of ~1/4 to that of Ni/Au metals, and as supercapacitor electrodes in aqueous electrolytes showing specific capacitances as high as 8.6$times$10$^{2}$ F g$^{-1}$. This work provides fresh insights into the delicate structure-property relationship and the broad application prospects of such metallic 2D materials.

Using density functional theory we have performed theoretical investigations of the electronic properties of a free-standing one-dimensional organometallic vanadium-benzene wire. This system represents the limiting case of multi-decker V_n(C6H6)_{n+1 } clusters which can be synthesized. We predict that the ground state of the wire is a 100% spin-polarized ferromagnet (half-metal). Its density of states is metallic at the Fermi energy for the minority electrons and shows a semiconductor gap for the majority electrons. We found that the half-metallic behavior is conserved up to 12%, longitudinal elongation of the wire. However, under further stretching, the system exhibits a transition to a high-spin ferromagnetic state that is accompanied by an abrupt jump of the magnetic moment and a gain of exchange energy.
We report on graphene-passivated ferromagnetic electrodes (GPFE) for spin devices. GPFE are shown to act as spin-polarized oxidation-resistant electrodes. The direct coating of nickel with few layer graphene through a readily scalable chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process allows the preservation of an unoxidized nickel surface upon air exposure. Fabrication and measurement of complete reference tunneling spin valve structures demonstrates that the GPFE is maintained as a spin polarizer and also that the presence of the graphene coating leads to a specific sign reversal of the magneto-resistance. Hence, this work highlights a novel oxidation-resistant spin source which further unlocks low cost wet chemistry processes for spintronics devices.
Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) materials hold promise for future electronics because of their unique band structures that result in electronic and mechanical properties sensitive to crystal strains in all three dimensions. Quantifying crystal strai n is a prerequisite to correlating it with the performance of the device, and calls for high resolution but spatially resolved rapid characterization methods. Here we show that using fly-scan nano X-ray diffraction we can accomplish a tensile strain sensitivity below 0.001% with a spatial resolution of better than 80 nm over a spatial extent of 100 $mu$m on quasi 2D flakes of 1T-TaS2. Coherent diffraction patterns were collected from a $sim$ 100 nm thick sheet of 1T-TaS2 by scanning 12keV focused X-ray beam across and rotating the sample. We demonstrate that the strain distribution around micron and sub-micron sized bubbles that are present in the sample may be reconstructed from these images. The experiments use state of the art synchrotron instrumentation, and will allow rapid and non-intrusive strain mapping of thin film samples and electronic devices based on quasi 2D materials.
We develop two types of graphene devices based on nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), that allows transport measurement in the presence of in situ strain modulation. Different mobility and conductance responses to strain were observed for single la yer and bilayer samples. These types of devices can be extended to other 2D membranes such as MoS2, providing transport, optical or other measurements with in situ strain.
Mutiferroics are a novel class of next generation multifunctional materials, which display simultaneous magnetic spin, electric dipole, and ferroelastic ordering, and have drawn increasing interest due to their multi-functionality for a variety of de vice applications. Since single-phase materials exist rarely in nature with such cross-coupling properties, an intensive research activity is being pursued towards the discovery of new single-phase multiferroic materials and the design of new engineered materials with strong magneto-electric (ME) coupling. This review article summarizes the development of different kinds of multiferroic material: single-phase and composite ceramic, laminated composite, and nanostructured thin films. Thin-film nanostructures have higher magnitude direct ME coupling values and clear evidence of indirect ME coupling compared with bulk materials. Promising ME coupling coefficients have been reported in laminated composite materials in which signal to noise ratio is good for device fabrication. We describe the possible applications of these materials.
