Mobile-edge computing (MEC) has emerged as a prominent technique to provide mobile services with high computation requirement, by migrating the computation-intensive tasks from the mobile devices to the nearby MEC servers. To reduce the execution latency and device energy consumption, in this paper, we jointly optimize task offloading scheduling and transmit power allocation for MEC systems with multiple independent tasks. A low-complexity sub-optimal algorithm is proposed to minimize the weighted sum of the execution delay and device energy consumption based on alternating minimization. Specifically, given the transmit power allocation, the optimal task offloading scheduling, i.e., to determine the order of offloading, is obtained with the help of flow shop scheduling theory. Besides, the optimal transmit power allocation with a given task offloading scheduling decision will be determined using convex optimization techniques. Simulation results show that task offloading scheduling is more critical when the available radio and computational resources in MEC systems are relatively balanced. In addition, it is shown that the proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal execution delay along with a substantial device energy saving.

In this paper, we investigate a mobile edge computing (MEC) system with its computation task subjected to sequential task dependency, which is critical for video stream processing and intelligent MEC applications. To minimize energy consumption per m obile device while limiting task processing delay, task offloading strategy, communication resource, and computation resource are optimized jointly under both slow and fast fading channels. In slow fading channels, an optimization problem is formulated, which is mixed-integer and non-convex. To solve this challenging problem, we decompose it as a one-dimensional search of task offloading decision problem and a non-convex optimization problem with task offloading decision given. Through mathematical manipulations, the non-convex problem is transformed to be a convex one, which is shown to be solvable only with the simple Golden search method. In fast fading channels, optimal online policy depending on instant channel state is derived. In addition, it is proved that the derived policy will converge to be offline when channel coherence time is low, which can help to save extra computation complexity. Numerical results verify the correctness of our analysis and the effectiveness of our proposed strategies over existing methods.
Mobile edge computing (MEC) can enhance the computing capability of mobile devices, and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can provide high data rates. Combining these two technologies can effectively benefit the network with spectrum and energy e fficiency. In this paper, we investigate the task completion time minimization in NOMA multiuser MEC networks, where multiple users can offload their tasks simultaneously via the same frequency band. We adopt the emph{partial} offloading, in which each user can partition its computation task into offloading computing and locally computing parts. We aim to minimize the maximum task latency among users by optimizing their tasks partition ratios and offloading transmit power. By considering the energy consumption and transmitted power limitation of each user, the formulated problem is quasi-convex. Thus, a bisection search (BSS) iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain the minimum task completion time. To reduce the complexity of the BSS algorithm and evaluate its optimality, we further derive the closed-form expressions of the optimal task partition ratio and offloading power for two-user NOMA MEC networks based on the analysed results. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence and optimality of the proposed a BSS algorithm and the effectiveness of the proposed optimal derivation.
In this paper, we consider the network power minimization problem in a downlink cloud radio access network (C-RAN), taking into account the power consumed at the baseband unit (BBU) for computation and the power consumed at the remote radio heads and fronthaul links for transmission. The power minimization problem for transmission is a fast time-scale issue whereas the power minimization problem for computation is a slow time-scale issue. Therefore, the joint network power minimization problem is a mixed time-scale problem. To tackle the time-scale challenge, we introduce large system analysis to turn the original fast time-scale problem into a slow time-scale one that only depends on the statistical channel information. In addition, we propose a bound improving branch-and-bound algorithm and a combinational algorithm to find the optimal and suboptimal solutions to the power minimization problem for computation, respectively, and propose an iterative coordinate descent algorithm to find the solutions to the power minimization problem for transmission. Finally, a distributed algorithm based on hierarchical decomposition is proposed to solve the joint network power minimization problem. In summary, this work provides a framework to investigate how execution efficiency and computing capability at BBU as well as delay constraint of tasks can affect the network power minimization problem in C-RANs.
Age of Information (AoI), defined as the time elapsed since the generation of the latest received update, is a promising performance metric to measure data freshness for real-time status monitoring. In many applications, status information needs to b e extracted through computing, which can be processed at an edge server enabled by mobile edge computing (MEC). In this paper, we aim to minimize the average AoI within a given deadline by jointly scheduling the transmissions and computations of a series of update packets with deterministic transmission and computing times. The main analytical results are summarized as follows. Firstly, the minimum deadline to guarantee the successful transmission and computing of all packets is given. Secondly, a emph{no-wait computing} policy which intuitively attains the minimum AoI is introduced, and the feasibility condition of the policy is derived. Finally, a closed-form optimal scheduling policy is obtained on the condition that the deadline exceeds a certain threshold. The behavior of the optimal transmission and computing policy is illustrated by numerical results with different values of the deadline, which validates the analytical results.
While mobile edge computing (MEC) alleviates the computation and power limitations of mobile devices, additional latency is incurred when offloading tasks to remote MEC servers. In this work, the power-delay tradeoff in the context of task offloading is studied in a multi-user MEC scenario. In contrast with current system designs relying on average metrics (e.g., the average queue length and average latency), a novel network design is proposed in which latency and reliability constraints are taken into account. This is done by imposing a probabilistic constraint on users task queue lengths and invoking results from extreme value theory to characterize the occurrence of low-probability events in terms of queue length (or queuing delay) violation. The problem is formulated as a computation and transmit power minimization subject to latency and reliability constraints, and solved using tools from Lyapunov stochastic optimization. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, while examining the power-delay tradeoff and required computational resources for various computation intensities.
