We examine the challenge of performing accurate electronic structure calculations at high pressures by comparing the results of all-electron full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave calculations with those of the projector augmented wave (PAW) method. In particular, we focus on developing an automated and consistent way of generating transferable PAW data-sets that can closely produce the all electron equation of state defined from zero to arbitrary high pressures. The technique we propose is an evolutionary search procedure that exploits the ATOMPAW code to generate atomic data-sets and the Quantum ESPRESSO software suite for total energy calculations. We demonstrate different aspects of its workability by optimizing PAW basis functions of some elements relatively abundant in planetary interiors. In addition, we introduce a new measure of atomic data-set goodness by considering their performance uniformity over an enlarged pressure range.

Large scale electronic structure calculations require modern high performance computing (HPC) resources and, as important, mature HPC applications that can make efficient use of those. Real-space grid-based applications of Density Functional Theory ( DFT) using the Projector Augmented Wave method (PAW) can give the same accuracy as DFT codes relying on a plane wave basis set but exhibit an improved scalability on distributed memory machines. The projection operations of the PAW Hamiltonian are known to be the performance critical part due to their limitation by the available memory bandwidth. We investigate on the utility of a 3D factorizable basis of Hermite functions for the localized PAW projector functions which allows to reduce the bandwidth requirements for the grid representation of the projector functions in projection operations. Additional on-the-fly sampling of the 1D basis functions eliminates the memory transfer almost entirely. For an quantitative assessment of the expected memory bandwidth savings we show performance results of a first implementation on GPUs. Finally, we suggest a PAW generation scheme adjusted to the analytically given projector functions.
Thermal and other transport coefficients were recently shown to be largely independent of the microscopic representation of the energy (current) densities or, more generally, of the relevant conserved densities/currents. In this paper we show how thi s gauge invariance, which is intimately related to the intrinsic indeterminacy of the energy of isolated atoms, can be exploited to optimize the statistical properties of the current time series from which the transport coefficients can be evaluated. To this end, we make use of a variational principle that relies on the metric properties of the conserved currents, treated as elements of an abstract linear space. Different metrics would result in different variational principles. We finally show how a recently proposed data-analysis methodology based on the theory of transport in multi-component systems can be recovered by a suitable choice of this metric.
We propose a hybrid scheme that interpolates smoothly the Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark (ZBL) screened nuclear repulsion potential with a newly developed deep learning potential energy model. The resulting DP-ZBL model can not only provide overall good p erformance on the predictions of near-equilibrium material properties but also capture the right physics when atoms are extremely close to each other, an event that frequently happens in computational simulations of irradiation damage events. We applied this scheme to the simulation of the irradiation damage processes in the face-centered-cubic aluminium system, and found better descriptions in terms of the defect formation energy, evolution of collision cascades, displacement threshold energy, and residual point defects, than the widely-adopted ZBL modified embedded atom method potentials and its variants. Our work provides a reliable and feasible scheme to accurately simulate the irradiation damage processes and opens up new opportunities to solve the predicament of lacking accurate potentials for enormous newly-discovered materials in the irradiation effect field.
Module for ab initio structure evolution (MAISE) is an open-source package for materials modeling and prediction. The codes main feature is an automated generation of neural network (NN) interatomic potentials for use in global structure searches. Th e systematic construction of Behler-Parrinello-type NN models approximating ab initio energy and forces relies on two approaches introduced in our recent studies. An evolutionary sampling scheme for generating reference structures improves the NNs mapping of regions visited in unconstrained searches, while a stratified training approach enables the creation of standardized NN models for multiple elements. A more flexible NN architecture proposed here expands the applicability of the stratified scheme for an arbitrary number of elements. The full workflow in the NN development is managed with a customizable MAISE-NET wrapper written in Python. The global structure optimization capability in MAISE is based on an evolutionary algorithm applicable for nanoparticles, films, and bulk crystals. A multitribe extension of the algorithm allows for an efficient simultaneous optimization of nanoparticles in a given size range. Implemented structure analysis functions include fingerprinting with radial distribution functions and finding space groups with the SPGLIB tool. This work overviews MAISEs available features, constructed models, and confirmed predictions.
We implement the statistically sound G-JF thermostat for Langevin Dynamics simulations into the ESPREesSo molecular package for large-scale simulations of soft matter systems. The implemented integration method is tested against the integrator curren tly used by the molecular package in simulations of a fluid bilayer membrane. While the latter exhibits deviations in the sampling statistics that increase with the integration time step dt, the former reproduces near-correct configurational statistics for all dt within the stability range of the simulations. We conclude that, with very modest revisions to existing codes, one can significantly improve the performance of statistical sampling using Langevin thermostats.
