Accurately weigh the masses of SMBH in AGN is currently possible for only a small group of local and bright broad-line AGN through reverberation mapping (RM). Statistical demographic studies can be carried out considering the empirical scaling relation between the size of the BLR and the AGN optical continuum luminosity. However, there are still biases against low-luminosity or reddened AGN, in which the rest-frame optical radiation can be severely absorbed/diluted by the host and the BLR emission lines could be hard to detect. Our purpose is to widen the applicability of virial-based SE relations to reliably measure the BH masses also for low-luminosity or intermediate/type 2 AGN that are missed by current methodology. We achieve this goal by calibrating virial relations based on unbiased quantities: the hard X-ray luminosities, in the 2-10 keV and 14-195 keV bands, that are less sensitive to galaxy contamination, and the FWHM of the most important rest-frame NIR and optical BLR emission lines. We built a sample of RM AGN having both X-ray luminosity and broad optical/NIR FWHM measurements available in order to calibrate new virial BH mass estimators. We found that the FWHM of the H$alpha$, H$beta$ and NIR lines (i.e. Pa$alpha$, Pa$beta$ and HeI$lambda$10830) all correlate each other having negligible or small offsets. This result allowed us to derive virial BH mass estimators based on either the 2-10 keV or 14-195 keV luminosity. We took also into account the recent determination of the different virial coefficients $f$ for pseudo and classical bulges. By splitting the sample according to the bulge type and adopting separate $f$ factors we found that our virial relations predict BH masses of AGN hosted in pseudobulges $sim$0.5 dex smaller than in classical bulges. Assuming the same average $f$ factor for both populations, a difference of $sim$0.2 dex is still found.

Quasars accreting matter at very high rates (known as extreme Population A [xA]) may provide a new class of distance indicators covering cosmic epochs from present day up to less than 1 Gyr from the Big Bang. We report on the developments of a method that is based on virial luminosity estimates from measurements of emission line widths of xA quasars. The approach is conceptually equivalent to the virial estimates based on early and late type galaxies. The main issues related to the cosmological application of luminosity estimates from xA quasar line widths are the identification of proper emission lines whose broadening is predominantly virial over a wide range of luminosity, and the assessment of the effect of the emitting region orientation with respect to the line of sight. We report on recent developments concerning the use of the AlIII 1860 intermediate ionisation line and of the Hydrogen Balmer line H$beta$ as virial broadening estimators.

Local samples of quiescent galaxies with dynamically measured black hole masses (Mbh) may suffer from an angular resolution-related selection effect, which could bias the observed scaling relations between Mbh and host galaxy properties away from the intrinsic relations. In particular, previous work has shown that the observed Mbh-Mstar (stellar mass) relation is more strongly biased than the Mbh-sigma (velocity dispersion) relation. Local samples of active galactic nuclei (AGN) do not suffer from this selection effect, as in these samples Mbh is estimated from megamasers and/or reverberation mapping-based techniques. With the exception of megamasers, Mbh-estimates in these AGN samples are proportional to a virial coefficient fvir. Direct modelling of the broad line region suggests that fvir~3.5. However, this results in a Mbh-Mstar relation for AGN which lies below and is steeper than the one observed for quiescent black hole samples. A similar though milder trend is seen for the Mbh-sigma relation. Matching the high-mass end of the Mbh-Mstar and Mbh-sigma relations observed in quiescent samples requires fvir~15 and fvir~7, respectively. On the other hand, fvir~3.5 yields Mbh-sigma and Mbh-Mstar relations for AGN which are remarkably consistent with the expected `intrinsic correlations for quiescent samples (i.e., once account has been made of the angular resolution-related selection effect), providing additional evidence that the sample of local quiescent black holes is biased. We also show that, as is the case for quiescent black holes, the Mbh-Mstar scaling relation of AGN is driven by velocity dispersion, thus providing additional key constraints to black hole-galaxy co-evolution models.
Getting insights on the shape and nature of the ionizing continuum in astronomical objects is often done via indirect methods as high energy photons are absorbed by our Galaxy. This work explores the ionization continuum of active galactic nuclei (AG N) using the ubiquitous coronal lines. Using bona-fide BH mass estimates from reverberation mapping and the line ratio [Si VI] 1.963 micron/Br$gamma_{rm broad}$ as tracer of the AGN ionizing continuum, a novel BH-mass scaling relation of the form log($M_{rm BH}) = (6.40pm 0.17) - (1.99pm 0.37) times$ log ([Si VI]/Br$gamma_{rm broad})$, over the BH mass interval, $10^6 - 10^8$ M$_{odot}$ with dispersion 0.47 dex is found. Following on the thin accretion disc approximation and after surveying a basic parameter space for coronal lines production, we believe that a key parameter driving this anti-correlation is the effective temperature of the accretion disc, this being effectively sampled by the coronal line gas. Accordingly, the observed anti-correlation becomes formally in line with the thin accretion disc prediction $T_{rm{disc}} propto {M_{rm BH}}^{-1/4}$.
We present the first results from an optical reverberation mapping campaign executed in 2014, targeting the active galactic nuclei (AGN) MCG+08-11-011, NGC 2617, NGC 4051, 3C 382, and Mrk 374. Our targets have diverse and interesting observational pr operties, including a changing look AGN and a broad-line radio galaxy. Based on continuum-H$beta$ lags, we measure black hole masses for all five targets. We also obtain H$gamma$ and He{sc ii},$lambda 4686$ lags for all objects except 3C 382. The He{sc ii},$lambda 4686$ lags indicate radial stratification of the BLR, and the masses derived from different emission lines are in general agreement. The relative responsivities of these lines are also in qualitative agreement with photoionization models. These spectra have extremely high signal-to-noise ratios (100--300 per pixel) and there are excellent prospects for obtaining velocity-resolved reverberation signatures.
The tight correlations between the mass of supermassive black holes ($M_{rm BH}$) and their host-galaxy properties have been of great interest to the astrophysical community, but a clear understanding of their origin and fundamental drivers still elu des us. The local relations for active galaxies are interesting in their own right and form the foundation for any evolutionary study over cosmic time. We present Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging of a sample of 66 local active galactic nuclei (AGNs); for 14 objects, we also obtained Gemini near-infrared images. We use state of the art methods to perform surface photometry of the AGN host galaxies, decomposing them in spheroid, disk and bar (when present) and inferring the luminosity and stellar mass of the components. We combine this information with spatially-resolved kinematics obtained at the Keck Telescopes to study the correlations between $M_{rm BH}$ (determined from single-epoch virial estimators) and host galaxy properties. The correlations are uniformly tight for our AGN sample, with intrinsic scatter 0.2-0.4 dex, smaller than or equal to that of quiescent galaxies. We find no difference between pseudo and classical bulges or barred and non-barred galaxies. We show that all the tight correlations can be simultaneously satisfied by AGN hosts in the 10$^7$-10$^9$ $M_{odot}$ regime, with data of sufficient quality. The MBH-$sigma$ relation is also in agreement with that of AGNs with $M_{rm BH}$ obtained from reverberation mapping, providing an indirect validation of single-epoch virial estimators of $M_{rm BH}$.
