We present a method for the calculation of photoemission spectra in terms of reduced density matrices. We start from the spectral representation of the one-body Greens function G, whose imaginary part is related to photoemission spectra, and we introduce a frequency-dependent effective energy that accounts for all the poles of G. Simple approximations to this effective energy give accurate spectra in model systems in the weak as well as strong correlation regime. In real systems reduced density matrices can be obtained from reduced density-matrix functional theory. Here we use this approach to calculate the photoemission spectrum of bulk NiO: our method yields a qualitatively correct picture both in the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, contrary to mean-field methods, in which the paramagnet is a metal.

We introduce the notion of the strongly correlated band insulator (SCI), where the lowest energy excitations are collective modes (excitons) rather than the single particles. We construct controllable 1/N expansion for SCI to describe their observabl es properties. A remarkable example of the SCI is bilayer graphene which is shown to be tunable between the SCI and usual weak coupling regime.

The purpose of this paper is (i) to present a generic and fully functional implementation of the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, and (ii) to describe how to write additional strongly-correlated electron models and geometries by using templated classes. Besides considering general models and geometries, the code implements Hamiltonian symmetries in a generic way and parallelization over symmetry-related matrix blocks.
We discuss the problem of a possible violation of the optical sum rule in the normal (non superconducting) state of strongly correlated electronic systems, using our recently proposed DMFT+Sigma approach, applied to two typical models: the hot - spot model of the pseudogap state and disordered Anderson - Hubbard model. We explicitly demonstrate that the general Kubo single band sum rule is satisfied for both models. However, the optical integral itself is in general dependent on temperature and characteristic parameters, such as pseudogap width, correlation strength and disorder scattering, leading to effective violation of the optical sum rule, which may be observed in the experiments.
The cross over from low to high carrier densities in a many-polaron system is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model, using unbiased numerical methods. Combining a novel quantum Monte Carlo approach and exact diagonal ization, accurate results for the single-particle spectrum and the electronic kinetic energy on fairly large systems are obtained. A detailed investigation of the quality of the Monte Carlo data is presented. In the physically most important adiabatic intermediate electron-phonon coupling regime, for which no analytical results are available, we observe a dissociation of polarons with increasing band filling, leading to normal metallic behavior, while for parameters favoring small polarons, no such density-driven changes occur. The present work points towards the inadequacy of single-polaron theories for a number of polaronic materials such as the manganites.
We formulate a low-energy theory for the magnetic interactions between electrons in the multi-band Hubbard model under non-equilibrium conditions determined by an external time-dependent electric field which simulates laser-induced spin dynamics. We derive expressions for dynamical exchange parameters in terms of non-equilibrium electronic Green functions and self-energies, which can be computed, e.g., with the methods of time-dependent dynamical mean-field theory. Moreover, we find that a correct description of the system requires, in addition to exchange, a new kind of magnetic interaction, that we name twist exchange, which formally resembles Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling, but is not due to spin-orbit, and is actually due to an effective three-spin interaction. Our theory allows the evaluation of the related time-dependent parameters as well.
