Mn has been found to self-assemble into atomic chains running perpendicular to the surface dimer reconstruction on Si(001). They differ from other atomic chains by a striking asymmetric appearance in filled state scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. This has prompted complicated structural models involving up to three Mn atoms per chain unit. Combining STM, atomic force microscopy and density functional theory we find that a simple necklace-like chain of single Mn atoms reproduces all their prominent features, including their asymmetry not captured by current models. The upshot is a remarkably simpler structure for modelling the electronic and magnetic properties of Mn atom chains on Si(001).

Understanding the carrier dynamics of nanostructures is the key for development and optimization of novel semiconductor nano-devices. Here, we study the optical properties and carrier dynamics of (InGa)(AsSb)/GaAs/GaP quantum dots (QDs) by means of n on-resonant energy and temperature modulated time-resolved photoluminescence. Studying this material system is important in view of the ongoing implementation of such QDs for nano memory devices. Our set of structures contains a single QD layer, QDs overgrown by a GaSb capping layer, and solely a GaAs quantum well, respectively. Theoretical analytical models allow us to discern the common spectral features around the emission energy of 1.8 eV related to GaAs quantum well and GaP substrate. We observe type-I emission from QDs with recombination times between 2 ns and 10 ns, increasing towards lower energies. The distribution suggests the coexistence of momentum direct and indirect QD transitions. Moreover, based on the considerable tunability of the dots depending on Sb incorporation, we suggest their utilization as quantum photonic sources embedded in complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) platforms, since GaP is almost lattice-matched to Si. Finally, our analysis confirms the nature of the pumping power blue-shift of emission originating from the charged-background induced changes of the wavefunction topology.
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveals unusual sharp features in otherwise defect free bismuth nanolines self-assembled on Si(001). They appear as subatomic thin lines perpendicular to the bismuth nanoline at positive biases and as atomic size b eads at negative biases. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that these features can be attributed to buckled Si dimers substituting for Bi dimers in the nanoline, where the sharp feature is the counterintuitive signature of these dimers flipping during scanning. The perfect correspondence between the STM data and the DFT simulation demonstrated in this study highlights the detailed understanding we have of the complex Bi-Si(001) Haiku system.

To quantify charge transport through molecular junctions fabricated using the conducting probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) platform, information on the number of molecules $N$ per junction is absolutely necessary. $N$ can be currently obtained o nly via contact mechanics, and the Youngs modulus $E$ of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) utilized in the key quantity for this approach. The experimental determination of $E$ for SAMs of CP-AFM junctions fabricated using oligophenylene dithiols (OPDn, $1 leq n leq 4$) and gold electrodes turned out to be too challenging. Recent measurements (Z. Xie et al, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 139 (2017) 5696) merely succeeded to provide a low bound estimate ($E approx 58,$GPa). It is this state of affairs that motivated the present theoretical investigation. Our microscopic calculations yield values $E approx 240 pm 6,$GPa for the OPDn SAMs of the aforementioned experimental study, which are larger than those of steel ($ E approx 180 - 200,$GPa) and silicon ($E approx 130 - 185,$GPa). The fact that the presently computed $E$ is much larger than the aforementioned experimental lower bound explain why experimentally measuring $E$ of OPDn SAMs is so challenging. Having $E approx 337 pm 8,$GPa, OPDn SAMs with herringbone arrangement adsorbed on fcc (111)Au are even stiffer than Si$_3$N$_4$ ($E approx 160 - 290,$GPa).
Polaron dephasing processes are investigated in InAs/GaAs dots using far-infrared transient four wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy. We observe an oscillatory behaviour in the FWM signal shortly (< 5 ps) after resonant excitation of the lowest energy con duction band transition due to coherent acoustic phonon generation. The subsequent single exponential decay yields long intraband dephasing times of 90 ps. We find excellent agreement between our measured and calculated FWM dynamics, and show that both real and virtual acoustic phonon processes are necessary to explain the temperature dependence of the polarization decay.
The terahertz spectra of the dynamic conductivity and radiation absorption coefficient in germanium-silicon heterostructures with arrays of Ge hut clusters (quantum dots) have been measured for the first time in the frequency range of 0.3-1.2 THz at room temperature. It has been found that the effective dynamic conductivity and effective radiation absorption coefficient in the heterostructure due to the presence of germanium quantum dots in it are much larger than the respective quantities of both the bulk Ge single crystal and Ge/Si(001) without arrays of quantum dots. The possible microscopic mechanisms of the detected increase in the absorption in arrays of quantum dots have been discussed.
