Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been carried out on a powder sample of Cu2PO4OH, which consists of diamond-shaped tetramer spin units with S=1/2. We have observed two nearly dispersionless magnetic excitations at E1~12 and E2~20 meV, whose energy width are broader than the instrumental resolution. The simplest square tetramer model with one dominant interaction, which predicts two sharp excitation peaks at E1 and E2(=2E1), does not explain the experimental result. We found that two diagonal intratetramer interactions compete with the main interaction and weak intertetramer interactions connect the tetramers. The main intratetramer interaction is found to split into two inequivalent ones due to a structural distortion below 160 K. Cu2PO4OH is considered to be a good material to study the S=1/2 Heisenberg tetramer system.

We measured the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat and the magnetic-field dependence of the magnetization of CuInVO$_5$. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{rm N} = 2.7$ K. We observed a $frac {1}{2}$ quantum magnetization plateau above 30 T at 1.3 K. We show that the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic spin-$frac{1}{2}$ tetramers with $J_1 = 240 pm 20$ and $J_2 = -142 pm 10$ K for the intratetramer interactions.
Unlike most quantum systems which rapidly become incoherent as temperature is raised, strong correlations persist at elevated temperatures in $S=1/2$ dimer magnets, as revealed by the unusual asymmetric lineshape of their excitations at finite temper atures. Here we quantitatively explore and parameterize the strongly correlated magnetic excitations at finite temperatures using the high resolution inelastic neutron scattering on the model compound BaCu$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ which we show to be an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin$-1/2$ chain. Comparison to state of the art computational techniques shows excellent agreement over a wide temperature range. Our findings hence demonstrate the possibility to quantitatively predict coherent behavior at elevated temperatures in quantum magnets.
A neutron scattering investigation of the magnetoelectric coupling in PbFe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}O_{3} (PFN) has been undertaken. Ferroelectric order occurs below 400 K, as evidenced by the softening with temperature and subsequent recovery of the zone center transverse optic phonon mode energy (hbar Omega_{0}). Over the same temperature range, magnetic correlations become resolution limited on a terahertz energy scale. In contrast to the behavior of nonmagnetic disordered ferroelectrics (namely Pb(Mg,Zn)_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_{3}), we report the observation of a strong deviation from linearity in the temperature dependence of (hbar Omega_{0})^{2}. This deviation is compensated by a corresponding change in the energy scale of the magnetic excitations, as probed through the first moment of the inelastic response. The coupling between the short-range ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic correlations is consistent with calculations showing that the ferroelectricity is driven by the displacement of the body centered iron site, illustrating the multiferroic nature of magnetic lead based relaxors in the dynamical regime.
The weakly interacting S=1/2 dimers system Sr3Cr2O8 has been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. Our data reveal a structural phase transition below room temperature corresponding to an antiferro-orbital order ing with nearly 90 degrees arrangement of the occupied 3z^2-r^2 d-orbital. This configuration leads to a drastic reduction of the inter-dimer exchange energies with respect to the high temperature orbital-disorder state, as shown by a spin-dimer analysis of the super-superexchange interactions performed using the Extended Huckel Tight Binding method. Inelastic neutron scattering reveals the presence of a quasi non-dispersive magnetic excitation at 5.4 meV, in agreement with the picture of weakly-interacting dimers.

Static magnetic susceptibility chi, ac susceptibility chi_{ac} and specific heat C versus temperature T measurements on polycrystalline samples of In2VO5 and chi and C versus T measurements on the isostructural, nonmagnetic compound In2TiO5 are repor ted. A Curie-Wiess fit to the chi(T) data above 175 K for In2VO5 indicates ferromagnetic exchange between V^{4+} (S = 1/2) moments. Below 150 K the chi(T) data deviate from the Curie-Weiss behavior but there is no signature of any long range magnetic order down to 1.8 K. There is a cusp at 2.8 K in the zero field cooled (ZFC) chi(T) data measured in a magnetic field of 100 Oe and the ZFC and field cooled (FC) data show a bifurcation below this temperature. The frequency dependence of the chi_{ac}(T) data indicate that below 3 K the system is in a spin-glass state. The difference Delta C between the heat capacity of In2VO5 and In2TiO5 shows a broad anomaly peaked at 130 K. The entropy upto 300 K is more than what is expected for S = 1/2 moments. The anomaly in Delta C and the extra entropy suggests that there may be a structural change below 130 K in In2VO5.
