Let $G$ be a connected, absolutely almost simple, algebraic group defined over a finitely generated, infinite field $K$, and let $Gamma$ be a Zariski dense subgroup of $G(K)$. We show, apart from some few exceptions, that the commensurability class of the field $mathcal{F}$ given by the compositum of the splitting fields of characteristic polynomials of generic elements of $Gamma$ determines the group $G$ upto isogeny over the algebraic closure of $K$.
We give a method to describe all congruence images of a finitely generated Zariski dense group $H leq mathrm{SL}(n, mathbb{Z})$. The method is applied to obtain efficient algorithms for solving this problem in odd prime degree $n$; if $n=2$ then we c
In this note we give a self-contained proof of the following classification (up to conjugation) of subgroups of the general symplectic group of dimension n over a finite field of characteristic l, for l at least 5, which can be derived from work of K
The Cremona group is the group of birational transformations of the complex projective plane. In this paper we classify its subgroups that consist only of elliptic elements using elementary model theory. This yields in particular a description of the
In this paper we consider the density of maximal order elements in $mathrm{GL}_n(q)$. Fixing any of the rank $n$ of the group, the characteristic $p$ or the degree $r$ of the extension of the underlying field $mathbb{F}_q$ of size $q=p^r$, we compute
We give a simple derivation of the formula for the number of normal elements in an extension of finite fields. Our proof is based on the fact that units in the Galois group ring of a field extension act simply transitively on normal elements.
