This paper focuses on the study of open curves in a manifold M, and proposes a reparameterization invariant metric on the space of such paths. We use the square root velocity function (SRVF) introduced by Srivastava et al. in [11] to define a reparameterization invariant metric on the space of immersions M = Imm([0,1], M) by pullback of a metric on the tangent bundle TM derived from the Sasaki metric. We observe that such a natural choice of Riemannian metric on TM induces a first-order Sobolev metric on M with an extra term involving the origins, and leads to a distance which takes into account the distance between the origins and the distance between the SRV representations of the curves. The geodesic equations for this metric are given, as well as an idea of how to compute the exponential map for observed trajectories in applications. This provides a generalized theoretical SRV framework for curves lying in a general manifold M .

We find a family of Kahler metrics invariantly defined on the radius $r_0>0$ tangent disk bundle ${{cal T}_{M,r_0}}$ of any given real space-form $M$ or any of its quotients by discrete groups of isometries. Such metrics are complete in the non-negat ive curvature case and non-complete in the negative curvature case. If $dim M=2$ and $M$ has constant sectional curvature $K eq0$, then the Kahler manifolds ${{cal T}_{M,r_0}}$ have holonomy $mathrm{SU}(2)$; hence they are Ricci-flat. For $M=S^2$, just this dimension, the metric coincides with the Stenzel metric on the tangent manifold ${{cal T}_{S^2}}$, giving us a new most natural description of this well-know metric.

We show that $phi$-invariant submanifolds of metric contact pairs with orthogonal characteristic foliations make constant angles with the Reeb vector fields. Our main result is that for the normal case such submanifolds of dimension at least $2$ are all minimal. We prove that an odd-dimensional $phi$-invariant submanifold of a metric contact pair with orthogonal characteristic foliations inherits a contact form with an almost contact metric structure, and this induced structure is contact metric if and only if the submanifold is tangent to one Reeb vector field and orthogonal to the other one. Furthermore we show that the leaves of the two characteristic foliations of the differentials of the contact pair are minimal. We also prove that when one Reeb vector field is Killing and spans one characteristic foliation, the metric contact pair is a product of a contact metric manifold with $mathbb{R}$.
We study reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics on spaces of regular curves. We discuss their completeness properties and the resulting usability for applications in shape analysis. In particular, we will argue, that the development of efficient numerical methods for higher order Sobolev type metrics is an extremely desirable goal.
We consider geometries on the space of Riemannian metrics conformally equivalent to the widely studied Ebin L^2 metric. Among these we characterize a distinguished metric that can be regarded as a generalization of Calabis metric on the space of Kahl er metrics to the space of Riemannian metrics, and we study its geometry in detail. Unlike the Ebin metric, the geodesic equation involves non-local terms, and we solve it explicitly by using a constant of the motion. We then determine its completion, which gives the first example of a metric on the space of Riemannian metrics whose completion is strictly smaller than that of the Ebin metric.
The {em focal curve} of an immersed smooth curve $gamma:smapsto gamma(s)$, in Euclidean space $R^{m+1}$, consists of the centres of its osculating hyperspheres. The focal curve may be parametrised in terms of the Frenet frame of $gamma$ (${bf t},{bf n}_1, ...,{bf n}_m$), as $C_gamma(s)=(gamma+c_1{bf n}_1+c_2{bf n}_2+...+c_m{bf n}_m)(s)$, where the coefficients $c_1,...,c_{m-1}$ are smooth functions that we call the {em focal curvatures} of $gamma$. We discovered a remarkable formula relating the Euclidean curvatures $kappa_i$, $i=1,...,m$, of $gamma$ with its focal curvatures. We show that the focal curvatures satisfy a system of Frenet equations (not vectorial, but scalar!). We use the properties of the focal curvatures in order to give, for $k=1,...,m$, necessary and sufficient conditions for the radius of the osculating $k$-dimensional sphere to be critical. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a point of $gamma$ to be a vertex. Finally, we show explicitly the relations of the Frenet frame and the Euclidean curvatures of $gamma$ with the Frenet frame and the Euclidean curvatures of its focal curve $C_gamma$.
