We investigate non-Gaussianity properties for a set of classical one-mode states obtained by subtracting photons from a thermal state. Three distance-type degrees of non-Gaussianity used for these states are shown to have a monotonic behaviour with respect to their mean photon number. Decaying of their non-Gaussianity under damping is found to be consistently described by the distance-type measures considered here. We also compare the dissipative evolution of non-Gaussianity when starting from $M$-photon-subtracted and $M$-photon-added thermal states

We present a study of optical quantum states generated by subtraction of photons from the thermal state. Some aspects of their photon number and quadrature distributions are discussed and checked experimentally. We demonstrate an original method of u p to ten photon subtracted state preparation with use of just one single-photon detector. All the states where measured with use of balanced homodyne technique, and the corresponding density matrices where reconstructed. The fidelity between desired and reconstructed states exceeds 99%
The estimation of high order correlation function values is an important problem in the field of quantum computation. We show that the problem can be reduced to preparation and measurement of optical quantum states resulting after annihilation of a s et number of quanta from the original beam. We apply this approach to explore various photon bunching regimes in optical states with gamma-compounded Poisson photon number statistics. We prepare and perform measurement of the thermal quantum state as well as states produced by subtracting one to ten photons from it. Maximum likelihood estimation is employed for parameter estimation. The goal of this research is the development of highly accurate procedures for generation and quality control of optical quantum states.

We report the experimental reconstruction of a nonclassicality quasiprobability for a single-photon added thermal state. This quantity has significant negativities, which is necessary and sufficient for the nonclassicality of the quantum state. Our m ethod presents several advantages compared to the reconstruction of the P function, since the nonclassicality filters used in this case can regularize the quasiprobabilities as well as their statistical uncertainties. A-priori assumptions about the quantum state are therefore not necessary. We also demonstrate that, in principle, our method is not limited by small quantum efficiencies.

We consider one-dimensional propagation of quantum light in the presence of a block of material, with a full account of dispersion and absorption. The electromagnetic zero-point energy for some frequencies is damped (suppressed) by the block below th e free-space value, while for other frequencies it is increased. We also calculate the regularized (Casimir) zero-point energy at each frequency and find that it too is damped below the free-space value (zero) for some frequencies. The total Casimir energy is positive.
We suggest an improved version of Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty relation for canonically conjugate variables by taking into account a pair of characteristics of states: non-Gaussianity and mixedness quantified by using fidelity and entropy, respe ctively. This relation is saturated by both Gaussian and Fock states, and provides strictly improved bound for any non-Gaussian states or mixed states. For the case of Gaussian states, it is reduced to the entropy-bounded uncertainty relation derived by Dodonov. Furthermore, we consider readily computable measures of both characteristics, and find weaker but more readily accessible bound. With its generalization to the case of two-mode states, we show applicability of the relation to detect entanglement of non-Gaussian states.
