We combine results from interferometry, asteroseismology and spectroscopy to determine accurate fundamental parameters of 23 bright solar-type stars, from spectral type F5 to K2 and luminosity classes III to V. For some stars we can use direct techniques to determine the mass, radius, luminosity and effective temperature, and we compare with indirect methods that rely on photometric calibrations or spectroscopic analyses. We use the asteroseismic information available in the literature to infer an indirect mass with an accuracy of 4-15 percent. From indirect methods we determine luminosity and radius to 3 percent. For Teff we find a slight offset of -40+-20 K between the spectroscopic method and the direct method, meaning the spectroscopic temperatures are too high. From the spectroscopic analysis we determine the detailed chemical composition for 13 elements, including Li, C and O. We find no significant offset between the spectroscopic surface gravity and the value from combining asteroseismology with radius estimates. From the spectroscopy we also determine vsini and we present a new calibration of macro- and microturbulence. From the comparison between the results from the direct and spectroscopic methods we claim that we can determine Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] with absolute accuracies of 80 K, 0.08 dex, and 0.07 dex. The indirect methods are important to obtain reliable estimates of the fundamental parameters of relatively faint stars when interferometry cannot be used. Our study is the first to compare direct and indirect methods for a large sample of stars, and we conclude that indirect methods are valid, although slight corrections may be needed.

We present a detailed spectroscopic study of 93 solar-type stars that are targets of the NASA/Kepler mission and provide detailed chemical composition of each target. We find that the overall metallicity is well-represented by Fe lines. Relative abun dances of light elements (CNO) and alpha-elements are generally higher for low-metallicity stars. Our spectroscopic analysis benefits from the accurately measured surface gravity from the asteroseismic analysis of the Kepler light curves. The log g parameter is known to better than 0.03 dex and is held fixed in the analysis. We compare our Teff determination with a recent colour calibration of V-K (TYCHO V magnitude minus 2MASS Ks magnitude) and find very good agreement and a scatter of only 80 K, showing that for other nearby Kepler targets this index can be used. The asteroseismic log g values agree very well with the classical determination using Fe1-Fe2 balance, although we find a small systematic offset of 0.08 dex (asteroseismic log g values are lower). The abundance patterns of metals, alpha elements, and the light elements (CNO) show that a simple scaling by [Fe/H] is adequate to represent the metallicity of the stars, except for the stars with metallicity below -0.3, where alpha-enhancement becomes important. However, this is only important for a very small fraction of the Kepler sample. We therefore recommend that a simple scaling with [Fe/H] be employed in the asteroseismic analyses of large ensembles of solar-type stars.

The study of detached eclipsing binaries is one of the most powerful ways to investigate the properties of individual stars and stellar systems. We present preliminary masses, radii and effective temperatures for the eclipsing binary WW Aurigae, whic h is composed of two metallic-lined A-type stars. We also reanalyse the data on HD 23642, an A-type eclipsing binary member of the Pleiades open cluster with a metallic-lined component, and determine its distance to be 139 +/- 4 pc. This is in agreement with the traditional Pleiades distance, but in disagreement with distance to the Pleiades, and to HD 23642 itself, derived from Hipparcos trigonometrical parallaxes.
We report the abundances of C, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd, and Sm in 25 solar-type stars in the solar neighbourhood, and their correlations with ages, kinematics, and orbital parameters. The spectrosc opic analysis, based high resolution and high S/N ratio data, was differential to the Sun and applied to atomic line EWs and to C and C2 spectral synthesis. We performed a statistical study using a tree clustering analysis, searching for groups of stars sharing similar abundance patterns. We derived Teff, log(g), and [Fe/H] with errors of 30 K, 0.13 dex, and 0.05 dex, respectively. The average error in [X/Fe] is 0.06 dex. Ages were derived from theoretical HR diagrams and memberships in kinematical moving groups. We identified four stellar groups: with over-solar abundances (<[X/H]> = +0.26 dex), under-solar abundances (<[X/H]> = -0.24 dex), and intermediate values (<[X/H]> = -0.06 and +0.06 dex) but with distinct chemical patterns. Stars sharing solar metallicity, age, and Galactic orbit possibly have non-solar abundance, an effect either of chemical heterogeneity in their natal clouds or migration. A trend of [Cu/Fe] with [Ba/Fe] seems to exist, in agreement with previous claims in the literature, and maybe also of [Sm/Fe] with [Ba/Fe]. No such correlation involving C, Na, Mn, and Zn is observed. [Mg/Fe], [Sc/Fe], and [Ti/Fe] increase with age. [Mn/Fe] and [Cu/Fe] first increase towards younger stars up to the solar age, and then decrease, a result we interpret as possibly related to time-varying yields of SN Ia and the weak s-process. [Sr/Fe], [Y/Fe], [Sr/Mg], [Y/Mg], [Sr/Zn], and [Y/Zn] linearly increase towards younger stars. [Zr/Fe], [Ce/Fe], [Nd/Fe], [Ba/Mg], [Ba/Zn], and [Sr,Y,Ba/Sm] increase but only for stars younger than the Sun. The steepest negative age relation is due to [Ba/Fe], but only for stars younger than the Sun.
Effective temperatures and luminosities are calculated for 1,475,921 Tycho-2 and 107,145 Hipparcos stars, based on distances from Gaia Data Release 1. Parameters are derived by comparing multi-wavelength archival photometry to BT-Settl model atmosphe res. The 1-sigma uncertainties for the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos stars are +/-137 K and +/-125 K in temperature and +/-35 per cent and +/-19 per cent in luminosity. The luminosity uncertainty is dominated by that of the Gaia parallax. Evidence for infrared excess between 4.6 and 25 microns is found for 4256 stars, of which 1883 are strong candidates. These include asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, Cepheids, Herbig Ae/Be stars, young stellar objects, and other sources. We briefly demonstrate the capabilities of this dataset by exploring local interstellar extinction, the onset of dust production in AGB stars, the age and metallicity gradients of the solar neighbourhood and structure within the Gould Belt. We close by discussing the potential impact of future Gaia data releases.
Stellar models applied to large stellar surveys of the Milky Way need to be properly tested against a sample of stars with highly reliable fundamental stellar parameters. We have established a program aiming to deliver such a sample. We present new f undamental stellar parameters of nine dwarfs that will be used as benchmarks for large stellar surveys. One of these stars is the solar-twin 18Sco, which is one of the Gaia-ESO benchmarks. The goal is to reach a precision of 1% in Teff. This precision is important for accurate determinations of the full set of fundamental parameters and abundances of stars observed by the surveys. We observed HD131156 (xiBoo), HD146233 (18Sco), HD152391, HD173701, HD185395 (thetaCyg), HD186408 (16CygA), HD186427 (16CygB), HD190360 and HD207978 (15Peg) using the high angular resolution optical interferometric instrument PAVO/CHARA. We derived limb-darkening corrections from 3D model atmospheres and determined Teff directly from the Stefan-Boltzmann relation, with an iterative procedure to interpolate over tables of bolometric corrections. Surface gravities were estimated from comparisons to Dartmouth stellar evolution model tracks. We collected spectroscopic observations from the ELODIE spectrograph and estimated metallicities ([Fe/H]) from a 1D non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundance analyses of unblended lines of neutral and singly ionized iron. For eight of the nine stars, we measure the Teff less than 1%, and for one star better than 2%. We determined the median uncertainties in logg and Fe/H as 0.015dex and 0.05dex, respectively. This study presents updated fundamental stellar parameters of nine dwarfs that can be used as a new set of benchmarks. All parameters were based on consistently combining interferometric observations, 3D limb-darkening modelling and spectroscopic analysis. The next paper will extend our sample to metal-rich giants.
