Using the VLA, a series of high velocity resolution observations have been made of the M82 starburst at 1.6 GHz. These observations follow up on previous studies of the main line OH maser emission in the central kiloparsec of this starburst region, but with far greater velocity resolution, showing significant velocity structure in some of the maser spots for the first time. A total of thirteen masers were detected, including all but one of the previously known sources. While some of these masers are still unresolved in velocity, these new results clearly show velocity structure in spectra from several of the maser regions. Position-velocity plots show good agreement with the distribution of H{sc i} including interesting velocity structure on the blueward feature in the west of the starburst which traces the velocity distribution seen in the ionised gas.

A study of the distribution of OH gas in the central region of the nearby active starburst galaxy M82 has confirmed two previously known bright masers and revealed several new main line masers. Three of these are seen only at 1665 MHz, one is detecte d only at 1667 MHz, while the rest are detected in both lines. Observations covering both the 1665 and 1667 MHz lines, conducted with both the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. This has allowed a comparison with catalogued continuum features in the starburst such as HII regions and supernova remnants, as well as known water and satellite line OH masers. Most of the main line masers appear to be associated with known HII regions although the two detected only at 1665 MHz are seen along the same line of sight as known supernova remnants.
We present a (sub)millimeter line survey of the methanol maser outflow located in the massive star-forming region DR21(OH) carried out with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 217/227 GHz and 337/347 GHz. We find transitions from several molecules towar ds the maser outflow such as CH$_3$OH, H$_2$CS, C$^{17}$O, H$^{13}$CO$^+$ and C$^{34}$S. However, with the present observations, we cannot discard the possibility that some of the observed species such as C$^{17}$O, C$^{34}$S, and H$_2$CS, might be instead associated with the compact and dusty continuum sources located in the MM2 region. Given that most of transitions correspond to methanol lines, we have computed a rotational diagram with CASSIS and a LTE synthetic spectra with XCLASS for the detected methanol lines in order to estimate the rotational temperature and column density in small solid angle of the outflow where enough lines are present. We obtain a rotational temperature of $28pm 2.5$K and a column density of $6.0pm 0.9 times 10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. These values are comparable to those column densities/rotational temperatures reported in outflows emanating from low-mass stars. Extreme and moderate physical conditions to excite the maser and thermal emission coexist within the CH$_3$OH flow. Finally, we do not detect any complex molecules associated with the flow, e.g., CH3OCHO, (CH3)2CO, and CH$_3$CH$_2$CN.
The current paradigm for the AGN phenomenon is a central engine that consists of an inflow of material accreting in the form of a disk onto a supermassive black hole. Observations in the UV and optical find high velocity ionized material outflowing f rom the black hole. We present results from Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of intrinsic NAL quasars with high velocity outflows. Our derived values of the intrinsic column densities of the X-ray absorbers are consistent with an outflow scenario in which NAL quasars are viewed at smaller inclination angles than BAL quasars. We find that the distributions of alpha_ox and Dalpha_ox of the NAL quasars of our sample differ significantly from those of BAL quasars and SDSS radio-quiet quasars. The NAL quasars are not significantly absorbed in the X-ray band and the positive values of Dalpha_ox suggest absorption in the UV band. The positive values of Dalpha_ox of the intrinsic NAL quasars can be explained in a geometric scenario where our lines of sight towards the compact X-ray hot coronae of NAL quasars do not traverse the absorbing wind whereas lines of sight towards their UV emitting accretion disks do intercept the outflowing absorbers.
We use high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck Observatory to measure the stellar velocity dispersions of 19 super star clusters (SSCs) in the nuclear starburst of M82. The clusters have ages on the order of 10 Myr, which is many times l onger than the crossing times implied by their velocity dispersions and radii. We therefore apply the Virial Theorem to derive the kinematic mass for 15 of the SSCs. The SSCs have masses of 2 x 10^5 to 4 x 10^6 solar masses, with a total population mass of 1.4 x 10^7 solar masses. Comparison of the loci of the young M82 SSCs and old Milky Way globular clusters in a plot of radius versus velocity dispersion suggests that the SSCs are a population of potential globular clusters. We present the mass function for the SSCs, and find a power law fit with an index of gamma = -1.91 +/- 0.06. This result is nearly identical to the mass function of young SSCs in the Antennae galaxies.

We report measurements and analysis of high-velocity (> 20,000 km/s) and photospheric absorption features in a series of spectra of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2009ig obtained between -14d and +13d with respect to the time of maximum B-band luminosity . We identify lines of Si II, Si III, S II, Ca II and Fe II that produce both high-velocity (HVF) and photospheric-velocity (PVF) absorption features. SN 2009ig is unusual for the large number of lines with detectable HVF in the spectra, but the light-curve parameters correspond to a slightly overluminous but unexceptional SN Ia (M_B = -19.46 mag and Delta_m15 (B) = 0.90 mag). Similarly, the Si II lambda_6355 velocity at the time of B-max is greater than normal for a SN Ia, but it is not extreme (v_Si = 13,400 km/s). The -14d and -13d spectra clearly resolve HVF from Si II lambda_6355 as separate absorptions from a detached line forming region. At these very early phases, detached HVF are prevalent in all lines. From -12d to -6d, HVF and PVF are detected simultaneously, and the two line forming regions maintain a constant separation of about 8,000 km/s. After -6d all absorption features are PVF. The observations of SN 2009ig provide a complete picture of the transition from HVF to PVF. Most SN Ia show evidence for HVF from multiple lines in spectra obtained before -10d, and we compare the spectra of SN 2009ig to observations of other SN. We show that each of the unusual line profiles for Si II lambda_6355 found in early-time spectra of SN Ia correlate to a specific phase in a common development sequence from HVF to PVF.
