We report single-mode lasing in subwavelength GaAs disks under optical pumping. The disks are fabricated by standard photolithography and two steps of wet chemical etching. The simple fabrication method can produce submicron disks with good circularity, smooth boundary and vertical sidewalls. The smallest lasing disks have a diameter of 627 nm and thickness of 265 nm. The ratio of the disk diameter to the vacuum lasing wavelength is about 0.7. Our numerical simulations confirm that the lasing modes are whispering-gallery modes with the azimuthal number as small as 4 and very small mode volume.

Erbium-doped lithium niobate high-Q microdisk cavities were fabricated in batches by UV exposure, inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching and chemo-mechanical polishing. The stimulated emission at 1531.6 nm was observed under the pump of a na rrow-band laser working at 974 nm in erbium-doped lithium niobate microdisk cavity with threshold down to 400 {mu}W and a conversion efficiency of 3.1{times}10^{-4} %, laying the foundation for the LNOI integrated light source research.
We demonstrate lasing mode selection in nearly circular semiconductor microdisks by shaping the spatial profile of optical pump. Despite of strong mode overlap, adaptive pumping suppresses all lasing modes except the targeted one. Due to slight defor mation of the cavity shape and boundary roughness, each lasing mode has distinct emission pattern. By selecting different mode to be the dominant lasing mode, we can switch both the lasing frequency and the output direction. Such tunability by external pump after the laser is fabricated enhances the functionality of semiconductor microcavity lasers.
Optically pumped InAs quantum dot microdisk lasers with grooves etched on their surface by a focused ion beam is studied. It is shown that the radial grooves, depending on their length, suppress the lasing of specific radial modes of the microdisk. T otal suppression of all radial modes except for the fundamental radial one is also demonstrated. The comparison of laser spectra measured at 78 K before and after ion beam etching for microdisk of 8 $mu$m in diameter shows a six-fold increase of mode spacing, from 2.5 nm to 15.5 nm, without significant decrease of the dominant mode quality factor. Numerical simulations are in good agreement with experimental results.
In this letter, the characteristics of noise and long-term stability of near- and mid-infrared (near-IR and mid-IR) gas-filled fiber Raman lasers have been investigated for the first time. The results reveal that an increase in Raman pulse energy is associated with a decrease in noise, and that the relative pulse peak intensity noise (RIN) is always lower than the relative pulse energy noise (REN). We also demonstrate that long-term drift of the pulse energy and peak power are directly linked with the high amount of heat release during the Raman Stokes generation. The demonstrated noise and long-term stability performance provide necessary references for potential spectroscopic applications as well as further improvements of the emerging mid-IR gas-filled hollow-core fiber (HCF) Raman laser technology.
Modern scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) has become an indispensable tool in material research. However, as the s-SNOM technique marches into the far-infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) regimes, emerging experiments someti mes produce puzzling results. For example, anomalies in the near-field optical contrast have been widely reported. In this Letter, we systematically investigate a series of extreme subwavelength metallic nanostructures via s-SNOM near-field imaging in the GHz to THz frequency range. We find that the near-field material contrast is greatly impacted by the lateral size of the nanostructure, while the spatial resolution is practically independent of it. The contrast is also strongly affected by the connectivity of the metallic structures to a larger metallic ground plane. The observed effect can be largely explained by a quasi-electrostatic analysis. We also compare the THz s-SNOM results to those of the mid-IR regime, where the size-dependence becomes significant only for smaller structures. Our results reveal that the quantitative analysis of the near-field optical material contrasts in the long-wavelength regime requires a careful assessment of the size and configuration of metallic (optically conductive) structures.
