A novel stochastic fluid model is proposed with non-ideal structure factor consistent with compressibility, and adjustable transport coefficients. This Stochastic Hard Sphere Dynamics (SHSD) algorithm is a modification of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithm and has several computational advantages over event-driven hard-sphere molecular dynamics. Surprisingly, SHSD results in an equation of state and pair correlation function identical to that of a deterministic Hamiltonian system of penetrable spheres interacting with linear core pair potentials. The fluctuating hydrodynamic behavior of the SHSD fluid is verified for the Brownian motion of a nano-particle suspended in a compressible solvent.

We combine the shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of amorphous plasticity with Edwards statistical theory of granular materials to describe shear flow in a disordered system of thermalized hard spheres. The equations of motion for this system are developed within a statistical thermodynamic framework analogous to that which has been used in the analysis of molecular glasses. For hard spheres, the system volume $V$ replaces the internal energy $U$ as a function of entropy $S$ in conventional statistical mechanics. In place of the effective temperature, the compactivity $X = partial V / partial S$ characterizes the internal state of disorder. We derive the STZ equations of motion for a granular material accordingly, and predict the strain rate as a function of the ratio of the shear stress to the pressure for different values of a dimensionless, temperature-like variable near a jamming transition. We use a simplified version of our theory to interpret numerical simulations by Haxton, Schmiedeberg and Liu, and in this way are able to obtain useful insights about internal rate factors and relations between jamming and glass transitions.
Low-energy dynamics of many-body fracton excitations necessary to describe topological defects should be governed by a novel type of hydrodynamic theory. We use a Poisson bracket approach to systematically derive hydrodynamic equations from conservat ion laws of scalar theories with fracton excitations. We study two classes of theories. In the first class we introduce a general action for a scalar with a shift symmetry linear in the spatial coordinates, while the second class serves as a toy model for disclinations and dislocations propagating along the Burgers vector. We apply our construction to study hydrodynamic fluctuations around equilibrium states and derive the dispersion relations of hydrodynamic modes.
The collective dynamics of liquid Gallium close to the melting point has been studied using Inelastic X-ray Scattering to probe lengthscales smaller than the size of the first coordination shell. %(momentum transfers, $Q$, $>$15 nm$^{-1}$). Although the structural properties of this partially covalent liquid strongly deviate from a simple hard-sphere model, the dynamics, as reflected in the quasi-elastic scattering, are beautifully described within the framework of the extended heat mode approximation of Enskogs kinetic theory, analytically derived for a hard spheres system. The present work demonstrates the applicability of Enskogs theory to non hard- sphere and non simple liquids.
We compute the rheological properties of inelastic hard spheres in steady shear flow for general shear rates and densities. Starting from the microscopic dynamics we generalise the Integration Through Transients (textsc{itt}) formalism to a fluid of dissipative, randomly driven granular particles. The stress relaxation function is computed approximately within a mode-coupling theory---based on the physical picture, that relaxation of shear is dominated by slow structural relaxation, as the glass transition is approached. The transient build-up of stress in steady shear is thus traced back to transient density correlations which are computed self-consistently within mode-coupling theory. The glass transition is signalled by the appearance of a yield stress and a divergence of the Newtonian viscosity, characterizing linear response. For shear rates comparable to the structural relaxation time, the stress becomes independent of shear rate and we observe shear thinning, while for the largest shear rates Bagnold scaling, i.e., a quadratic increase of shear stress with shear rate, is recovered. The rheological properties are qualitatively similar for all values of $varepsilon$, the coefficient of restitution; however, the magnitude of the stress as well as the range of shear thinning and thickening show significant dependence on the inelasticity.
When granular systems are modeled by frictionless hard spheres, particle-particle collisions are considered as instantaneous events. This implies that while the velocities change according to the collision rule, the positions of the particles are the same before and after such an event. We show that depending on the material and system parameters, this assumption may fail. For the case of viscoelastic particles we present a universal condition which allows to assess whether the hard-sphere modeling and, thus, event-driven Molecular Dynamics simulations are justified.
