A simple non-local theoretical model is developed considering concentrated ionic surfactant solutions as regular ones. Their thermodynamics is described by the Cahn-Hilliard theory coupled with electrostatics. It is discovered that unstable solutions possess two critical temperatures, where the temperature coefficients of all characteristic lengths are discontinuous. At temperatures below the lower critical temperature ionic surfactant solutions separate into thin layers of oppositely charged liquids spread across the whole system and the electric potential is strictly periodic. At temperatures between the two critical temperatures separation can occur only near the solution surface thus leading to an oscillatory-decaying electric double layer. At temperatures above the higher critical temperature as well as in stable solutions there is no separation and the electric potential decays exponentially.

The electric double layer (EDL) formed around charged nanostructures at the liquid-solid interface determines their electrochemical activity and influences their electrical and optical polarizability. We experimentally demonstrate that restructuring of the EDL at the nanoscale can be detected by dark-field scattering microscopy. Temporal and spatial characterization of the scattering signal demonstrates that the potentiodynamic optical contrast is proportional to the accumulated charge of polarisable ions at the interface and its time derivative represents the nanoscale ionic current. The material-specificity of the EDL formation is used in our work as a label-free contrast mechanism to image nanostructures and perform spatially-resolved cyclic voltametry on ion current density of a few attoamperes, corresponding to the exchange of only a few hundred ions.
A new modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation accounting for the finite size of the ions valid for realistic salt-free concentrated suspensions has been derived, extending the formalism developed for pure salt-free suspensions [Roa et al., Phys. Chem. Ch em. Phys., 2011, 13, 3960-3968] to real experimental conditions. These realistic suspensions include water dissociation ions and those generated by atmospheric carbon dioxide contamination, in addition to the added counterions released by the particles to the solution. The electric potential at the particle surface will be calculated for different ion sizes and compared with classical Poisson-Boltzmann predictions for point-like ions, as a function of particle charge and volume fraction. The realistic predictions turn out to be essential to achieve a closer picture of real salt-free suspensions, and even more important when ionic size effects are incorporated to the electric double layer description. We think that both corrections have to be taken into account when developing new realistic electrokinetic models, and surely will help in the comparison with experiments for low-salt or realistic salt-free systems.
Anisotropic colloidal particles constitute an important class of building blocks for self-assembly directed by electrical fields. The aggregation of these building blocks is driven by induced dipole moments, which arise from an interplay between diel ectric effects and the electric double layer. For particles that are anisotropic in shape, charge distribution, and dielectric properties, calculation of the electric double layer requires coupling of the ionic dynamics to a Poisson solver. We apply recently proposed methods to solve this problem for experimentally employed colloids in static and time-dependent electric fields. This allows us to predict the effects of field strength and frequency on the colloidal properties.

This work shows that bulk ionic liquids (ILs) and their water solution can be conveniently investigated by synchrotron-based UV resonance Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy. The main advantages of this technique for the investigation of the local structure an d intermolecular interactions in imidazolium-based ILs are presented and discussed. The unique tunability of synchrotron source allows one to selectively enhance in the Raman spectra the vibrational signals arising from the imidazolium ring. Such signals showed good sensitivity to the modifications induced in the local structure of ILs by i) the change of anion and ii) the progressively longer alkyl chain substitution on the imidazolium ring. Moreover, some UVRR signals are specifically informative on the effect induced by addition of water on the strength of cation-anion H-bonds in IL-water solutions. All of these results corroborate the potentiality of UVRR to retrieve information on the intermolecular interactions in IL-water solutions, besides the counterpart obtained by employing on these systems the spontaneous Raman scattering technique.
We have applied recent machine learning advances, deep convolutional neural network, to three-dimensional (voxels) soft matter data, generated by Molecular Dynamics computer simulation. We have focused on the structural and phase properties of a coar se-grained model of hydrated ionic surfactants. We have trained a classifier able to automatically detect the water quantity absorbed in the system, therefore associating to each hydration level the corresponding most representative nano-structure. Based on the notion of transfer learning, we have next applied the same network to the related polymeric ionomer Nafion, and have extracted a measure of the similarity of these configurations with those above. We demonstrate that on this basis it is possible to express the static structure factor of the polymer at fixed hydration level as a superposition of those of the surfactants at multiple water contents. We suggest that such a procedure can provide a useful, agnostic, data-driven, precise description of the multi-scale structure of disordered materials, without resorting to any a-priori model picture.
