The local and non-local contents of non-local probability distributions are studied using the approach of Elitzur, Popescu and Rohrlich [Phys. Lett. A textbf{162}, 25 (1992)]. This work focuses on distributions that can be obtained by single-copy von Neumann measurements on bipartite quantum systems. For pure two-qubit states Psi(theta)=cos(theta)|00>+sin(theta)|11>, with cos(theta)>=sin(theta), the local content of the corresponding probability distribution is found to lie between 1-sin(2*theta) and cos(2*theta). For the family Psi(gamma)= (|00>+|11>+gamma*|22>)/sqrt(2+gamma^2) of two-qutrit states, non-zero local content is found for gamma>2.

Distinct from the type of local realist inequality (known as the Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu or CGLMP inequality) usually used for bipartite qutrit systems, we formulate a new set of local realist inequalities for bipartite qutrits by general izing Wigners argument that was originally formulated for the bipartite qubit singlet state. This treatment assumes existence of the overall joint probability distributions in the underlying stochastic hidden variable space for the measurement outcomes pertaining to the relevant trichotomic observables, satisfying the locality condition and yielding the measurable marginal probabilities. Such generalized Wigner inequalities (GWI) do not reduce to Bell-CHSH type inequalities by clubbing any two outcomes, and are violated by quantum mechanics (QM) for both the bipartite qutrit isotropic and singlet states using trichotomic observables defined by six-port beam splitter as well as by the spin-$1$ component observables. The efficacy of GWI is then probed in these cases by comparing the QM violation of GWI with that obtained for the CGLMP inequality. This comparison is done by incorporating white noise in the singlet and isotropic qutrit states. It is found that for the six-port beam splitter observables, QM violation of GWI is more robust than that of the CGLMP inequality for singlet qutrit states, while for isotropic qutrit states, QM violation of the CGLMP inequality is more robust. On the other hand, for the spin-$1$ component observables, QM violation of GWI is more robust for both the type of states considered.

The no-signaling constraint on bi-partite correlations is reviewed. It is shown that in order to obtain non-trivial Bell-type inequalities that discern no-signaling correlations from more general ones, one must go beyond considering expectation value s of products of observables only. A new set of nontrivial no-signaling inequalities is derived which have a remarkably close resemblance to the CHSH inequality, yet are fundamentally different. A set of inequalities by Roy and Singh and Avis et al., which is claimed to be useful for discerning no-signaling correlations, is shown to be trivially satisfied by any correlation whatsoever. Finally, using the set of newly derived no-signaling inequalities a result with potential cryptographic consequences is proven: if different parties use identical devices, then, once they have perfect correlations at spacelike separation between dichotomic observables, they know that because of no-signaling the local marginals cannot but be completely random.
Topological quantum error correction codes are known to be able to tolerate arbitrary local errors given sufficient qubits. This includes correlated errors involving many local qubits. In this work, we quantify this level of tolerance, numerically st udying the effects of many-qubit errors on the performance of the surface code. We find that if increasingly large area errors are at least moderately exponentially suppressed, arbitrarily reliable quantum computation can still be achieved with practical overhead. We furthermore quantify the effect of non-local two-qubit correlated errors, which would be expected in arrays of qubits coupled by a polynomially decaying interaction, and when using many-qubit coupling devices. We surprisingly find that the surface code is very robust to this class of errors, despite a provable lack of a threshold error rate when such errors are present.

Most studies of collective dephasing for bipartite as well as multipartite quantum systems focus on a very specific orientation of magnetic field, that is, z-orientation. However, in practical situations, there are always small fluctuations in stocha stic field and it is necessary that more general orientations of fields should be considered. We extend this problem to qubit-qutrit systems and study correlation dynamics for entanglement and local quantum uncertainty for some specific quantum states. We find that certain quantum states exhibit freezing dynamics both for entanglement and local quantum uncertainty. We analyze the asymptotic states and find the conditions for having non-zero entanglement and local quantum uncertainty. Our results are relevant for ion-trap experiments and can be verified with current experimental setups.
What singles out quantum mechanics as the fundamental theory of Nature? Here we study local measurements in generalised probabilistic theories (GPTs) and investigate how observational limitations affect the production of correlations. We find that if only a subset of typical local measurements can be made then all the bipartite correlations produced in a GPT can be simulated to a high degree of accuracy by quantum mechanics. Our result makes use of a generalisation of Dvoretzkys theorem for GPTs. The tripartite correlations can go beyond those exhibited by quantum mechanics, however.
