We present HI observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 2974, obtained with the Very Large Array. These observations reveal that the previously detected HI disc in this galaxy (Kim et al. 1988) is in fact a ring. By studying the harmonic expansion of the velocity field along the ring, we constrain the elongation of the halo and find that the underlying gravitational potential is consistent with an axisymmetric shape. We construct mass models of NGC 2974 by combining the HI rotation curve with the central kinematics of the ionised gas, obtained with the integral-field spectrograph SAURON. We introduce a new way of correcting the observed velocities of the ionised gas for asymmetric drift, and hereby disentangle the random motions of the gas caused by gravitational interaction from those caused by turbulence. To reproduce the observed flat rotation curve of the HI gas, we need to include a dark halo in our mass models. A pseudo-isothermal sphere provides the best model to fit our data, but we also tested an NFW halo and Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), which fit the data marginally worse. The mass-to-light ratio M/L_I increases in NGC 2974 from 4.3 (M/L_I)sun at one effective radius to 8.5 (M/L_I)sun at 5 Re. This increase of M/L already suggests the presence of dark matter: we find that within 5 Re at least 55 per cent of the total mass is dark.

The relative importance of the physical processes shaping the thermodynamics of the hot gas permeating rotating, massive early-type galaxies is expected to be different from that in non-rotating systems. Here, we report the results of the analysis of XMM-Newton data for the massive, lenticular galaxy NGC 7049. The galaxy harbours a dusty disc of cool gas and is surrounded by an extended hot X-ray emitting gaseous atmosphere with unusually high central entropy. The hot gas in the plane of rotation of the cool dusty disc has a multi-temperature structure, consistent with ongoing cooling. We conclude that the rotational support of the hot gas is likely capable of altering the multiphase condensation regardless of the $t_{rm cool}/t_{rm ff}$ ratio, which is here relatively high, $sim 40$. However, the measured ratio of cooling time and eddy turnover time around unity ($C$-ratio $approx 1$) implies significant condensation, and at the same time, the constrained ratio of rotational velocity and the velocity dispersion (turbulent Taylor number) ${rm Ta_t} > 1$ indicates that the condensing gas should follow non-radial orbits forming a disc instead of filaments. This is in agreement with hydrodynamical simulations of massive rotating galaxies predicting a similarly extended multiphase disc.
We present the resolved stellar populations in the inner and outer halo of the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC~3115. Using deep HST observations, we analyze stars two magnitudes fainter than the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). We study three fields along the minor axis of this galaxy, 19, 37 and 54 kpc from its center -- corresponding to 7, 14, 21 effective radii (r_{e}). Even at these large galactocentric distances, all of the fields are dominated by a relatively enriched population, with the main peak in the metallicity distribution decreasing with radius from [Z/H] ~ -0.5 to -0.65. The fraction of metal-poor stars ([Z/H] < -0.95) increases from 17%, at 16-37 kpc, to 28%, at ~54 kpc. We observe a distinct low metallicity population (peaked at [Z/H] ~ -1.3 and with total mass 2*10^{10}M_{odot} ~ 14% of the galaxys stellar mass) and argue that this represents the detection of an underlying low metallicity stellar halo. Such halos are generally predicted by galaxy formation theories and have been observed in several late type galaxies including the Milky Way and M31. The metallicity and spatial distribution of the stellar halo of NGC~3115 are consistent with the galaxys globular cluster system, which has a similar low metallicity population that becomes dominant at these large radii. This finding supports the use of globular clusters as bright chemo-dynamical tracers of galaxy halos. These data also allow us to make a precise measurement of the magnitude of the TRGB, from which we derive a distance modulus of NGC~3115 of 30.05pm0.05pm0.10_{sys} (10.2pm0.2pm0.5_{sys} Mpc).
The NGC 1052 group, and in particular the discovery of two ultra diffuse galaxies with very low internal velocity dispersions, has been the subject of much attention recently. Here we present radial velocities for a sample of 77 globular clusters ass ociated with NGC 1052 obtained on the Keck telescope. Their mean velocity and velocity dispersion are consistent with that of the host galaxy. Using a simple tracer mass estimator, we infer the enclosed dynamical mass and dark matter fraction of NGC 1052. Extrapolating our measurements with an NFW mass profile we infer a total halo mass of 6.2 ($pm$0.2) $times$ 10$^{12}$ M$_{odot}$. This mass is fully consistent with that expected from the stellar mass--halo mass relation, suggesting that NGC 1052 has a normal dark matter halo mass (i.e. it is not deficient in dark matter in contrast to two ultra diffuse galaxies in the group). We present a phase space diagram showing the galaxies that lie within the projected virial radius (390 kpc) of NGC 1052. Finally, we briefly discuss the two dark matter deficient galaxies (NGC 1052--DF and DF4) and consider whether MOND can account for their low observed internal velocity dispersions.
Recent results from the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph (PN.S) survey have revealed a rapidly falling velocity dispersion profile in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 3379, casting doubts on whether this intermediate-luminosity galaxy has the kind of da rk matter halo expected in LambdaCDM cosmology. We present a detailed dynamical study of this galaxy, combining long-slit spectroscopy, SAURON integral-field data, and PN.S velocities, reaching to more than seven effective radii (R_e). We construct spherical and axisymmetric dynamical models for these data with the flexible made-to-measure NMAGIC code, in a sequence of gravitational potentials with varying dark halo mass. We find that the data are consistent both with near-isotropic spherical systems dominated by the stellar mass, and with models in massive halos with strongly radially anisotropic outer parts (beta >~ 0.8 at 7R_e). Formal likelihood limits would exclude (at 1 sigma) the model with stars only, as well as halo models with v_circ(7R_e) >~ 250 km/s. A sequence of more realistic axisymmetric models of different inclinations and a small number of triaxial tests confirm the spherical results. All valid models fitting all the data are dynamically stable over Gyrs, including the most anisotropic ones. NGC 3379 may well have a dark matter halo as predicted by recent merger models within LambdaCDM cosmology, provided its outer envelope is strongly radially anisotropic. (abridged)
A recently discovered young, high-velocity giant star J01020100-7122208 is a good candidate of hypervelocity star ejected from the Galactic center, although it has a bound orbit. If we assume that this star was ejected from the Galactic center, it ca n be used to constrain the Galactic potential, because the deviation of its orbit from a purely radial orbit informs us of the torque that this star has received after its ejection. Based on this assumption, we estimate the flattening of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way by using the Gaia DR2 data and the circular velocity data from Eilers et al. (2019). Our Bayesian analysis shows that the orbit of J01020100-7122208 favors a prolate dark matter halo within $sim$ 10 kpc from the Galactic center. The posterior distribution of the density flattening $q$ shows a broad distribution at $q gtrsim1$ and peaks at $q simeq 1.5$. Also, 98.5% of the posterior distribution is located at $q>1$, highly disfavoring an oblate halo.
