We have generated more than 100 watts of radial polarized beam from a Yb fiber laser using a photonics crystal segmented half-wave-plate. We demonstrated the high power handling capability of such a photonics crystal segmented half-wave-plate and show that it is a promising external radial polarization converter for high power Yb fiber laser used in laser cutting industry.
We have constructed an achromatic half wave plate (AHWP) suitable for the millimeter wavelength band. The AHWP was made from a stack of three sapphire a-cut birefringent plates with the optical axes of the middle plate rotated by 50.5 degrees with re
spect to the aligned axes of the other plates. The measured modulation efficiency of the AHWP at 110 GHz was $96 pm 1.5$%. In contrast, the modulation efficiency of a single sapphire plate of the same thickness was $43 pm 4$%. Both results are in close agreement with theoretical predictions. The modulation efficiency of the AHWP was constant as a function of incidence angles between 0 and 15 degrees. We discuss design parameters of an AHWP in the context of astrophysical broad band polarimetry at the millimeter wavelength band.
We present a simple novel scheme that converts a Gaussian beam into an approximated radially polarized beam using coherent polarization manipulation together with Poynting walk-off in birefringent crystals. Our scheme alleviates the interferometric s
tability required by previous schemes that implemented this coherent mode summation using Mach-Zehnder-like interferometers. A symmetrical arrangement of two walk-off crystals with a half-wave plate, allows coherence control even when the laser has short temporal coherence length. We generated 14 watts of radially polarized beam from an Ytterbium fiber laser, only limited by the available fiber laser power.
We demonstrate photonic crystal nanobeam cavities that support both TE- and TM-polarized modes, each with a Quality factor greater than one million and a mode volume on the order of the cubic wavelength. We show that these orthogonally polarized mode
s have a tunable frequency separation and a high nonlinear spatial overlap. We expect these cavities to have a variety of applications in resonance-enhanced nonlinear optics.
We demonstrate a cylindrically-symmetric polarization retarder for generating exact radially polarized light. It involves an uni-axial crystal whose crystallographic optics axis is aligned to its optical axis. This method offers high power-handling capability
The resonance band in hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF), while leading to high-loss region in the fiber transmission spectrum, has been successfully used for generating phase-matched dispersive wave (DW). Here, we report that the spectral w
idth of the resonance-induced DW can be largely broadened due to plasma-driven blueshifting soliton. In the experiment, we observed that in a short length of Ar-filled single-ring HC-PCF the soliton self-compression and photoionization effects caused a strong spectral blueshift of the pump pulse, changing the phase-matching condition of the DW emission process. Therefore, broadening of DW spectrum to the longer-wavelength side was obtained with several spectral peaks, which correspond to the generation of DW at different positions along the fiber. In the simulation, we used super-Gauss windows with different central wavelengths to filter out these DW spectral peaks, and studied the time-domain characteristics of these peaks respectively using Fourier transform method. The simulation results verified that these multiple-peaks on the DW spectrum have different delays in the time domain, agreeing well with our theoretical prediction. Remarkably, we found that the whole time-domain DW trace can be compressed to ~29 fs using proper chirp compensation. The experimental and numerical results reported here provide some insight into the resonance-induced DW generation process in gas-filled HC-PCFs, they could also pave the way to ultrafast pulse generation using DW-emission mechanism.
