We show that the dynamic structure factor of a one-dimensional Bose liquid has a power-law singularity defining the main mode of collective excitations. Using the Lieb-Liniger model, we evaluate the corresponding exponent as a function of the wave vector and the interaction strength.
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of a class of isolated one-dimensional systems possessing two degenerate ground states, initialized in a low-energy symmetric phase. We report the emergence of a time-scale separation between fast (radiatio
n) and slow (kink or domain wall) degrees of freedom. We find a universal long-time dynamics, largely independent of the microscopic details of the system, in which the kinks control the relaxation of relevant observables and correlations. The resulting late-time dynamics can be described by a set of phenomenological equations, which yield results in excellent agreement with the numerical tests.
We study inelastic decay of bosonic excitations in a Luttinger liquid. In a model with linear excitation spectrum the decay rate diverges. We show that this difficulty is resolved when the interaction between constituent particles is strong, and the
excitation spectrum is nonlinear. Although at low energies the nonlinearity is weak, it regularizes the divergence in the decay rate. We develop a theoretical description of the approach of the system to thermal equilibrium. The typical relaxation rate scales as the fifth power of temperature.
The ground state of a spinor Bose liquid is ferromagnetic, while the softest excitation above the ground state is the magnon mode. The dispersion relation of the magnon in a one-dimensional liquid is periodic in the wavenumber q with the period 2pi n
, determined by the density n of the liquid. Dynamic correlation functions, such as e.g. spin-spin correlation function, exhibit power-law singularities at the magnon spectrum, $omegatoomega_m(q,n)$. Without using any specific model of the inter-particle interactions, we relate the corresponding exponents to independently measurable quantities $partialomega_m/partial q$ and $partialomega_m/partial n$.
We study elementary excitations of a system of one-dimensional bosons with weak contact repulsion. We show that the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, in which the excitations are the well-known Bogoliubov quasiparticles and dark solitons, does not extend to t
he low energy limit. Instead, the spectra of both excitations have finite curvatures at zero momentum, in agreement with the phenomenological picture of fermionic quasiparticles. We describe analytically the crossover between the Gross-Pitaevskii and the low-energy regimes, and discuss implications of our results for the behavior of the dynamic structure factor.
We report the observation of harmonic generation and strong nonlinear coupling of two collective modes of a condensed gas of rubidium atoms. Using a modified TOP trap we changed the trap anisotropy to a value where the frequency of the m=0 high-lying
mode corresponds to twice the frequency of the m=0 low-lying mode, thus leading to strong nonlinear coupling between these modes. By changing the anisotropy of the trap and exciting the low-lying mode we observed significant frequency shifts of this fundamental mode and also the generation of its second harmonic.
