In recent years, the availability of highly pure stable isotopes has made possible the investigation of the dependence of the physical properties of crystals, in particular semiconductors, on their isotopic composition. Following the investigation of the specific heat ($C_p$, $C_v$) of monatomic crystals such as diamond, silicon, and germanium, similar investigations have been undertaken for the tetrahedral diatomic systems ZnO and GaN (wurtzite structure), for which the effect of the mass of the cation differs from that of the anion. In this article we present measurements for a semiconductor with rock salt structure, namely lead sulfide. Because of the large difference in the atomic mass of both constituents ($M_{rm Pb}$= 207.21 and ($M_{rm S}$=32.06 a.m.u., for the natural isotopic abundance) the effects of varying the cation and that of the anion mass are very different for this canonical semiconductor. We compare the measured temperature dependence of $C_p approx C_v$, and the corresponding derivatives with respect to ($M_{rm Pb}$ and $M_{rm S}$), with textit{textit{ab initio}} calculations based on the lattice dynamics obtained from the local density approximation (LDA) electronic band structure. Quantitative deviations between theory and experiment are attributed to the absence of spin-orbit interaction in the ABINIT program used for the electronic band structure calculations.

We study the dependence of thermal conductivity of single walled nanotubes (SWNT) on chirality and isotope impurity by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method with accurate potentials. It is found that, contrary to electronic conductivity, the therm al conductivity is insensitive to the chirality. The isotope impurity, however, can reduce the thermal conductivity up to 60% and change the temperature dependence behavior. We also study the dependence of thermal conductivity on tube length for tubes of different radius at different temperatures.

Phase transitions in superconducting mesoscopic disks have been studied over the H-T phase diagram through heat capacity measurement of an array of independent aluminium disks. These disks exhibit non periodic modulations versus H of the height of th e heat capacity jump at the superconducting to normal transition. This behaviour is attributed to giant vortex states characterized by their vorticity L. A crossover from a bulk-like to a mesoscopic behaviour is demonstrated. $C_{rm p}$ versus H plots exhibit cascades of phase transitions as L increases or decreases by one unity, with a strong hysteresis. Phase diagrams of giant vortex states inside the superconducting region are drawn in the vortex penetration and expulsion regimes and phase transitions driven by temperature between vortex states are thus predicted in the zero field cooled regime before being experimentally evidenced.
Magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance have been studied in Dy(Co1-xSix)2 [x=0, 0.075 and 0.15] compounds. Magnetocaloric effect has been calculated in terms of adiabatic temperatue change (Delta Tad) as well as isothermal magnetic entropy chang e (Delta SM) using the heat capacity data. The maximum values of DeltaSM and DeltaTad for DyCo2 are found to be 11.4 JKg-1K-1 and 5.4 K, respectively. Both DSM and DTad decrease with Si concentration, reaching a value of 5.4 JKg-1K-1 and 3 K, respectively for x=0.15. The maximum magnetoresistance is found to about 32% in DyCo2, which decreases with increase in Si. These variations are explained on the basis of itinerant electron metamagnetism occurring in these compounds.

Based on an accurate first principles description of the energetics in H-bonded KDP, we conduct a first study of nuclear quantum effects and of the changes brought about by deuteration. Cluster tunneling involving also heavy ions is allowed, the main effect of deuteration being a depletion of the proton probability density at the O-H-O bridge center, which in turn weakens its proton-mediated covalent bonding. The ensuing lattice expansion couples selfconsistently with the proton off-centering, thus explaining both the giant isotope effect, and its close connection with geometrical effects.
A new calorimeter for measurements of the AC heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect of small samples in pulsed magnetic fields is discussed for the exploration of thermal and thermodynamic properties at temperatures down to 2 K. We tested the method up to mu 0H = 50 Tesla, but it could be extended to higher fields. For these measurements we used carefully calibrated bare chip Cernoxtextregistered and RuO2 thermometers, and we present a comparison of their performance. The monotonic temperature and magnetic field dependences of the magneto resistance of RuO2 allow us to carry on precise thermometry with a precision as good as pm 1mK at T = 2 K. To test the performance of our calorimeter, AC heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect for the spin-dimer compound Sr3Cr2O8 and the triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 are presented.
