We discuss the solitary wave solutions of a particular two-component scalar field model in two-dimensional Minkowski space. These solitary waves involve one, two or four lumps of energy. The adiabatic motion of these composite non-linear non-dispersive waves points to variations in shape.

Theoretical and experimental results on optical ring dark solitary waves are presented, emphasizing the interplay between initial dark beam contrast, phase-shift magnitude, background-beam intensity and saturation of the nonlinearity are presented. T he results are found to confirm qualitatively the existing analytical theory and are in agreement with the numerical simulations carried out.
We study asymptotic stability of solitary wave solutions in the one-dimensional Benney-Luke equation, a formally valid approximation for describing two-way water wave propagation. For this equation, as for the full water wave problem, the classic var iational method for proving orbital stability of solitary waves fails dramatically due to the fact that the second variation of the energy-momentum functional is infinitely indefinite. We establish nonlinear stability in energy norm under the spectral stability hypothesis that the linearization admits no non-zero eigenvalues of non-negative real part. We also verify this hypothesis for waves of small energy.
We consider the interplay between nonlocal nonlinearity and randomness for two different nonlinear Schrodinger models. We show that stability of bright solitons in presence of random perturbations increases dramatically with the nonlocality-induced f inite correlation length of the noise in the transverse plane, by means of both numerical simulations and analytical estimates. In fact, solitons are practically insensitive to noise when the correlation length of the noise becomes comparable to the extent of the wave packet. We characterize soliton stability using two different criteria based on the evolution of the Hamiltonian of the soliton and its power. The first criterion allows us to estimate a time (or distance) over which the soliton preserves its form. The second criterion gives the life-time of the solitary wave packet in terms of its radiative power losses. We derive a simplified mean field approach which allows us to calculate the power loss analytically in the physically relevant case of weakly correlated noise, which in turn serves as a lower estimate of the life-time for correlated noise in general case.
We study the interactions of two or more solitons in the Adlam-Allen model describing the evolution of a (cold) plasma of positive and negative charges, in the presence of electric and transverse magnetic fields. In order to show that the interaction s feature an exponentially repulsive nature, we elaborate two distinct approaches: (a) using energetic considerations and the Hamiltonian structure of the model; (b) using the so-called Manton method. We compare these findings with results of direct simulations, and identify adjustments necessary to achieve a quantitative match between them. Additional connections are made, such as with solitons of the Korteweg--de Vries equation. Future challenges are also mentioned in connection to this model and its solitary waves.

A higher-order dispersive equation is introduced as a candidate for the governing equation of a field theory. A new class of solutions of the three-dimensional field equation are considered, which are not localized functions in the sense of the integ rability of the square of the profile over an infinite domain. For this new class of solutions, the gradient and/or the Hessian/Laplacian are square integrable. In the linear limiting case, an analytical expression for the pseudolocalized solution is found and the method of variational approximation is applied to find the dynamics of the centers of the quasi-particles (QPs) corresponding to these solutions. A discrete Lagrangian can be derived due to the localization of the gradient and the Laplacian of the profile. The equations of motion of the QPs are derived from the discrete Lagrangian. The pseudomass (wave mass) of a QP is defined as well as the potential of interaction. The most important trait of the new QPs is that at large distances, the force of attraction is proportional to the inverse square of the distance between the QPs. This can be considered analogous to the gravitational force in classical mechanics.
