The problem of image reconstruction in thermoacoustic tomography requires inversion of a generalized Radon transform, which integrates the unknown function over circles in 2D or spheres in 3D. The paper investigates implementation of the recently discovered backprojection type inversion formulas for the case of spherical acquisition in 3D. A numerical simulation of the data acquisition with subsequent reconstructions are made for the Defrise phantom as well as for some other phantoms. Both full and partial scan situations are considered. The results are compared with the implementation of a previously used approximate inversion formula.

We present a family of closed form inversion formulas in thermoacoustic tomography in the case of a constant sound speed. The formulas are presented in both time-domain and frequency-doma
The paper surveys recent progress in establishing uniqueness and developing inversion formulas and algorithms for the thermoacoustic tomography. In mathematical terms, one deals with a rather special inverse problem for the wave equation. In the case of constant sound speed, it can also be interpreted as a problem concerning the spherical mean transform.
Fast image reconstruction techniques are becoming important with the increasing number of scientific cases in high resolution micro and nano tomography. The processing of the large scale three-dimensional data demands new mathematical tools for the t omographic reconstruction task because of the big computational complexity of most current algorithms as the sizes of tomographic data grow with the development of more powerful acquisition hardware and more refined scientific needs. In the present paper we propose a new fast back-projection operator for the processing of tomographic data and compare it against other fast reconstruction techniques.

Many applications require multi-dimensional numerical integration, often in the form of a cubature formula. These cubature formulas are desired to be positive and exact for certain finite-dimensional function spaces (and weight functions). Although t here are several efficient procedures to construct positive and exact cubature formulas for many standard cases, it remains a challenge to do so in a more general setting. Here, we show how the method of least squares can be used to derive provable positive and exact formulas in a general multi-dimensional setting. Thereby, the procedure only makes use of basic linear algebra operations, such as solving a least squares problem. In particular, it is proved that the resulting least squares cubature formulas are ensured to be positive and exact if a sufficiently large number of equidistributed data points is used. We also discuss the application of provable positive and exact least squares cubature formulas to construct nested stable high-order rules and positive interpolatory formulas. Finally, our findings shed new light on some existing methods for multivariate numerical integration and under which restrictions these are ensured to be successful.
Filtered backprojection (FBP) is an efficient and popular class of tomographic image reconstruction methods. In photoacoustic tomography, these algorithms are based on theoretically exact analytic inversion formulas which results in accurate reconstr uctions. However, photoacoustic measurement data are often incomplete (limited detection view and sparse sampling), which results in artefacts in the images reconstructed with FBP. In addition to that, properties such as directivity of the acoustic detectors are not accounted for in standard FBP, which affects the reconstruction quality, too. To account for these issues, in this papers we propose to improve FBP algorithms based on machine learning techniques. In the proposed method, we include additional weight factors in the FBP, that are optimized on a set of incomplete data and the corresponding ground truth photoacoustic source. Numerical tests show that the learned FBP improves the reconstruction quality compared to the standard FBP.
