In this paper we examine in detail the implementation, with its associated difficulties, of the Killing conditions and gauge fixing into the variational principle formulation of Bianchi-Type cosmologies. We address problems raised in the literature concerning the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formulations: We prove their equivalence, make clear the role of the Homogeneity Preserving Diffeomorphisms in the phase space approach, and show that the number of physical degrees of freedom is the same in the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations. Residual gauge transformations play an important role in our approach, and we suggest that Poincare transformations for special relativistic systems can be understood as residual gauge transformations. In Appendices, we give the general computation of the equations of motion and the Lagrangian for any Bianchi-Type vacuum metric and for spatially homogeneous Maxwell fields in a nondynamical background (with zero currents). We also illustrate our counting of degrees of freedom in an Appendix.

We analyze how a quantum-gravity-induced change in the number of thermal dimensions (through a modified dispersion relation) affects the geometry and the thermodynamics of a charged black hole. To that end we resort to Kiselevs solution as the impact such modifications have on the evaporation rate of the black hole becomes more clear. As an application, we study the case for which the thermal dimension is reduced to two.
We present in detail the Einstein equations in the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura formulation for the case of $D$ dimensional spacetimes with $SO(D-d)$ isometry based on a method originally introduced in Ref.1. Regularized expressions are given f or a numerical implementation of this method on a vertex centered grid including the origin of the quasi-radial coordinate that covers the extra dimensions with rotational symmetry. Axisymmetry, corresponding to the value $d=D-2$, represents a special case with fewer constraints on the vanishing of tensor components and is conveniently implemented in a variation of the general method. The robustness of the scheme is demonstrated for the case of a black-hole head-on collision in $D=7$ spacetime dimensions with $SO(4)$ symmetry.

Many theories of quantum gravity live in higher dimensions, and their reduction to four dimensions via mechanisms such as Kaluza-Klein compactification or brane world models have associated problems. We propose a novel mechanism of dimensional reduct ion via spontaneous symmetry breaking of a higher dimensional local Lorentz group to one in lower dimensions. Working in the gauge theory formulation of gravity, we couple a scalar field to spin connections, include a potential for the field, and show that for a suitable choice of scalar vacuum, the local Lorentz symmetry of the action gets spontaneously reduced to one in a lower dimension. Thus effectively the dimension of spacetime gets reduced by one. This provides a viable mechanism for the dimensional reduction, and may have applications in theories of quantum gravity.
We extend recent discussions of singularity avoidance in quantum gravity from isotropic to anisotropic cosmological models. The investigation is done in the framework of quantum geometrodynamics (Wheeler-DeWitt equation). We formulate criteria of sin gularity avoidance for general Bianchi class A models and give explicit and detailed results for Bianchi I models with and without matter. We find that the classical singularities can generally be avoided in these models.
Some cosmological solutions of massive strings are obtained in Bianchi I space-time following the techniques used by Letelier and Stachel. A class of solutions corresponds to string cosmology associated with/without a magnetic field and the other cla ss consists of pure massive strings, obeying the Takabayashi equation of state.
