{it Ab initio} investigations of the full static dielectric response and Born effective charge of BN nanotubes (BN-NTs) have been performed for the first time using finite electric field method. It is found that the ionic contribution to the static dielectric response of BN-NTs is substantial and also that a pronounced chirality-dependent oscillation is superimposed on the otherwise linear relation between the longitudinal electric polarizability and the tube diameter ($D$), as for a thin dielectric cylinderical shell. In contrast, the transverse dielectric response of the BN-NTs resemble the behavior of a thin (non-ideal) conducting cylindrical shell of a diameter of $D+4$AA$ $, with a screening factor of 2 for the inner electric field. The medium principal component $Z_y^*$ of the Born effective charge corresponding to the transverse atomic displacement tangential to the BN-NT surface, has a pronounced $D$-dependence (but independent of chirality), while the large longitudinal component $Z_z^*$ exhibits a clear chirality dependence (but nearly $D$-independent), suggesting a powerful way to characterize the diameter and chirality of a BN-NT.

Wannier tight-binding models are effective models constructed from first-principles calculations. As such, they bridge a gap between the accuracy of first-principles calculations and the computational simplicity of effective models. In this work, we extend the existing methodology of creating Wannier tight-binding models from first-principles calculations by introducing the symmetrization post-processing step, which enables the production of Wannier-like models that respect the symmetries of the considered crystal. Furthermore, we implement automatic workflows, which allow for producing a large number of tight-binding models for large classes of chemically and structurally similar compounds, or materials subject to external influence such as strain. As a particular illustration, these workflows are applied to strained III-V semiconductor materials. These results can be used for further study of topological phase transitions in III-V quantum wells.
A degenerate perturbation $kcdot p$ approach for effective mass calculations is implemented in the all-electron density functional theory (DFT) package WIEN2k. The accuracy is tested on major group IVA, IIIA-VA, and IIB-VIA semiconductor materials. T hen, the effective mass in graphene and CuI with defects is presented as illustrative applications. For states with significant Cu-d character additional local orbitals with higher principal quantum numbers (more radial nodes) have to be added to the basis set in order to converge the results of the perturbation theory. Caveats related to a difference between velocity and momentum matrix elements are discussed in the context of application of the method to non-local potentials, such as Hartree-Fock/DFT hybrid functionals and DFT+U.
Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes can provide reactive sites on the porphyrin-like defects. Its well known that many porphyrins have transition metal atoms, and we have explored transition metal atoms bonded to those porphyrin-like defects in N-doped c arbon nanotubes. The electronic structure and transport are analyzed by means of a combination of density functional theory and recursive Greens functions methods. The results determined the Heme B-like defect (an iron atom bonded to four nitrogens) as the most stable and with a higher polarization current for a single defect. With randomly positioned Heme B-defects in a few hundred nanometers long nanotubes the polarization reaches near 100% meaning an effective spin filter. A disorder induced magnetoresistance effect is also observed in those long nanotubes, values as high as 20000% are calculated with non-magnectic eletrodes.
The hyperfine interaction between the quadrupole moment of atomic nuclei and the electric field gradient (EFG) provides information on the electronic charge distribution close to a given atomic site. In ferroelectric materials, the loss of inversion symmetry of the electronic charge distribution is necessary for the appearance of the electric polarization. We present first-principles density functional theory calculations of ferroelectrics such as BaTiO3, KNbO3, PbTiO3 and other oxides with perovskite structures, by focusing on both EFG tensors and polarization. We analyze the EFG tensor properties such as orientation and correlation between components and their link with electric polarization. This work supports previous studies of ferroelectric materials where a relation between EFG tensors and polarization was observed, which may be exploited to study ferroelectric order when standard techniques to measure polarization are not easily applied.

The electronic structures of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) doped by different organic molecules under a transverse electric field were investigated via first-principles calculations. The external field reduces the energy gap of BNNT, thus makes the molecular bands closer to the BNNT band edges and enhances the charge transfers between BNNT and molecules. The effects of the electric field direction on the band structure are negligible. The electric field shielding effect of BNNT to the inside organic molecules is discussed. Organic molecule doping strongly modifies the optical property of BNNT, and the absorption edge is red-shifted under static transverse electric field.
