A degenerate perturbation $kcdot p$ approach for effective mass calculations is implemented in the all-electron density functional theory (DFT) package WIEN2k. The accuracy is tested on major group IVA, IIIA-VA, and IIB-VIA semiconductor materials. Then, the effective mass in graphene and CuI with defects is presented as illustrative applications. For states with significant Cu-d character additional local orbitals with higher principal quantum numbers (more radial nodes) have to be added to the basis set in order to converge the results of the perturbation theory. Caveats related to a difference between velocity and momentum matrix elements are discussed in the context of application of the method to non-local potentials, such as Hartree-Fock/DFT hybrid functionals and DFT+U.

We study the general problem of mixing for ab-initio quantum-mechanical problems. Guided by general mathematical principles and the underlying physics, we propose a multisecant form of Broydens second method for solving the self-consistent field equa tions of Kohn-Sham density functional theory. The algorithm is robust, requires relatively little finetuning and appears to outperform the current state of the art, converging for cases that defeat many other methods. We compare our technique to the conventional methods for problems ranging from simple to nearly pathological.
Efficient ab initio calculations of correlated materials at finite temperature require compact representations of the Greens functions both in imaginary time and Matsubara frequency. In this paper, we introduce a general procedure which generates spa rse sampling points in time and frequency from compact orthogonal basis representations, such as Chebyshev polynomials and intermediate representation (IR) basis functions. These sampling points accurately resolve the information contained in the Greens function, and efficient transforms between different representations are formulated with minimal loss of information. As a demonstration, we apply the sparse sampling scheme to diagrammatic $GW$ and GF2 calculations of a hydrogen chain, of noble gas atoms and of a silicon crystal.
Cyclometalled Ir(III) compounds are the preferred choice as organic emitters in Organic Light Emitting Diodes. In practice, the presence of the transition metals surrounded by carefully designed ligands allows the fine tuning of the emission frequenc y as well as a good efficiency of the device. To support the development of new compounds the experimental measurements are generally compared with ab-initio calculation of the absorption and emission spectra. The standard approach for these calculations is TDDFT with hybrid exchange and correlation functional like the B3LYP. Due to the size of these compounds the application of more complex quantum chemistry approaches can be challenging. In this work we used Many Body Perturbation Theory approaches (in particular the GW approximation with the Bethe-Salpeter equation) implemented in gaussian basis sets, to calculate the quasiparticle properties and the adsorption spectra of six cyclometalled Ir(III) complexes going behind TDDFT. In the presented results we compared standard TDDFT simulation with BSE calculations performed on top on perturbative G 0 W 0 and accounting for eigenvalue self consistency. Moreover, in order to investigate in detail the effect of the DFT starting point, we concentrate on Ir(ppy) 3 performing GW-BSE simulations starting from different DFT exchange and correlation potentials.
A procedure is presented that combines density functional theory computations of bulk semiconductor alloys with the semiconductor Bloch equations, in order to achieve an ab initio based prediction of the optical properties of semiconductor alloy hete rostructures. The parameters of an eight-band kp-Hamiltonian are fitted to the effective band structure of an appropriate alloy. The envelope function approach is applied to model the quantum well using the kp-wave functions and eigenvalues as starting point for calculating the optical properties of the heterostructure. It is shown that Luttinger parameters derived from band structures computed with the TB09 density functional reproduce extrapolated values. The procedure is illustrated by computing the absorption spectra for a (AlGa)As/Ga(AsP)/(AlGa)As quantum well system with varying phosphide content in the active layer.
We extend the recently developed converse NMR approach [T. Thonhauser, D. Ceresoli, A. Mostofi, N. Marzari, R. Resta, and D. Vanderbilt, J. Chem. Phys. textbf{131}, 101101 (2009)] such that it can be used in conjunction with norm-conserving, non-loca l pseudopotentials. This extension permits the efficient ab-initio calculation of NMR chemical shifts for elements other than hydrogen within the convenience of a plane-wave pseudopotential approach. We have tested our approach on several finite and periodic systems, finding very good agreement with established methods and experimental results.
