From Raman spectroscopy, magnetization, and thermal-expansion on the system La2/3(Ca1-xSrx)1/3MnO3, we have been able to provide a quantitative basis for the heterogeneous electronic model for manganites exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). We construct a mean-field model that accounts quantitatively for the measured deviation of TC(x) from the TC predicted by de Gennes double exchange in the adiabatic approximation, and predicts the occurrence of a first order transition for a strong coupling regime, in accordance with the experiments. The existence of a temperature interval TC<T<T* where CMR may be found is discussed, in connection with the occurrence of an idealized Griffiths phase.

We present results of our broadband ellipsometry measurements of the optical response of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$. Our data show that the ferromagnetic transition is accompanied by a transfer of optical spectral weight from an absorp tion band centered at 1.5 eV to a narrow component of the Drude-like peak. The associated reduction of the intraband kinetic energy is significantly larger than $k_{rm B}T_c$, confirming that the double exchange plays a major role in the ferromagnetism of doped cobaltites. In conjunction with results of recent theoretical studies, the temperature dependence of the Drude-like peak suggests that the double exchange is mediated by $t_{2g}$ orbitals.
The phase diagram of the simplest approximation to Double-Exchange systems, the bosonic Double-Exchange model with antiferromagnetic super-exchange coupling, is fully worked out by means of Monte Carlo simulations, large-N expansions and Variational Mean-Field calculations. We find a rich phase diagram, with no first-order phase transitions. The most surprising finding is the existence of a segment like ordered phase at low temperature for intermediate AFM coupling which cannot be detected in neutron-scattering experiments. This is signaled by a maximum (a cusp) in the specific heat. Below the phase-transition, only short-range ordering would be found in neutron-scattering. Researchers looking for a Quantum Critical Point in manganites should be wary of this possibility. Finite-Size Scaling estimates of critical exponents are presented, although large scaling corrections are present in the reachable lattice sizes.

We study the competition between different possible ground states of the double-exchange model with strong ferromagnetic exchange interaction between itinerant electrons and local spins. Both for classical and quantum treatment of the local spins the homogeneous canted state is shown to be unstable against a phase separation. The conditions for the phase separation into the mixture of the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic/canted states are given. We also discuss another possible realization of the phase-separated state: ferromagnetic polarons embedded into an antiferromagnetic surrounding. The general picture of a percolated state, which emerges from these considerations, is discussed and compared with results of recent experiments on doped manganaties.
The ability to tune exchange (magnetic) interactions between 3d transition metals in perovskite structures has proven to be a powerful route to discovery of novel properties. Here we demonstrate that the introduction of 3d-5d exchange pathways in dou ble perovskites enables additional tunability, a result of the large spatial extent of 5d wave functions. Using x-ray probes of magnetism and structure at high pressure, we show that compression of Sr2FeOsO6 drives an unexpected continuous change in the sign of Fe-Os exchange interactions and a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferrimagnetic order. We analyze the relevant electron-electron interactions, shedding light into fundamental differences with the more thoroughly studied 3d-3d systems.

Epitaxially strained LaCoO3 (LCO) thin films were grown with different film thickness, t, on (001) oriented (LaAlO3)0.3(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates. After initial pseudomorphic growth the films start to relieve their strain partly by the for mation of periodic nano-twins with twin planes predominantly along the <100> direction. Nano-twinning occurs already at the initial stage of growth, albeit in a more moderate way. Pseudomorphic grains, on the other hand, still grow up to a thickness of at least several tenths of nanometers. The twinning is attributed to the symmetry lowering of the epitaxially strained pseudo-tetragonal structure towards the relaxed rhombohedral structure of bulk LCO. However, the unit-cell volume of the pseudo-tetragonal structure is found to be nearly constant over a very large range of t. Only films with t > 130 nm show a significant relaxation of the lattice parameters towards values comparable to those of bulk LCO.
