Ever since high Tc superconductivity was discovered in La-based mixed oxide system by Bednorz and Muller, enormous efforts have been put in by several researchers around the world in understanding the origin and mechanism of superconductivity in these, as well as in systems derived from them. It is a proven fact that the superconductivity in RE-123 superconductors is governed by the oxygen content, which in turn is responsible for the carrier concentration in the system. Due to their dependence on oxygen content, RE-123 superconductors undergo structural transformation from orthorhombic to tetragonal as a function of oxygen content making them very difficult compounds to work with, in terms of technological applications, such as device fabrication. Hence, it would be interesting to obtain a stable compound whose superconducting properties, are not only insensitive directly to oxygen content but, having dependence of its carrier concentration and Tc on the nature and amount of the substituted cation. In the present work, we focus our investigations for such a compound, which has been derived from a tetragonal RE-123 superconducting system. In this chapter, we present a brief review of the studies carried out on La-2125 compounds to elucidate the role of dopants in modifying the superconducting properties and establish a structure-property correlation in them.

We report on a systematic study of the stress transferred from an electromechanical piezo-stack into GaAs wafers under a wide variety of experimental conditions. We show that the strains in the semiconductor lattice, which were monitored in situ by m eans of X-ray diffraction, are strongly dependent on both the wafer thickness and on the selection of the glue which is used to bond the wafer to the piezoelectric actuator. We have identified an optimal set of parameters that reproducibly transfers the largest distortions at room temperature. We have studied strains produced not only by the frequently used uniaxial piezostressors but also by the biaxial ones which replicate the routinely performed experiments using substrate-induced strains but with the advantage of a continuously tunable lattice distortion. The time evolution of the strain response and the sample tilting and/or bending are also analyzed and discussed.
Recent investigations have shown that Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ can be made superconducting by annealing it in Se and O vapors. The current lore is that these chalcogen vapors induce superconductivity by removing the magnetic excess Fe atoms. To i nvestigate this phenomenon we performed a combination of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and transport measurements together with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations on Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ treated with Te vapor. We conclude that the main role of the Te vapor is to quench the magnetic moments of the excess Fe atoms by forming FeTe$_{m}$ (m $geq$ 1) complexes. We show that the remaining FeTe$_{m}$ complexes are still damaging to the superconductivity and therefore that their removal potentially could further improve superconductive properties in these compounds.
By introducing a superconducting gap in Weyl- or Dirac semi-metals, the superconducting state inherits the non-trivial topology of their electronic structure. As a result, Weyl superconductors are expected to host exotic phenomena such as non-zero-mo mentum pairing due to their chiral node structure, or zero- energy Majorana modes at the surface. These are of fundamental interest to improve our understanding of correlated topological systems, and moreover practical applications in phase coherent devices and quantum applications have been proposed. Proximity-induced superconductivity promises to allow such experiments on non-superconducting Weyl semi-metals. Here we show a new route to reliably fabricating superconducting microstructures from the non-superconducting Weyl semi-metal NbAs under ion irradiation. The significant difference in the surface binding energy of Nb and As leads to a natural enrichment of Nb at the surface during ion milling, forming a superconducting surface layer (Tc~3.5K). Being formed from the target crystal itself, the ideal contact between the superconductor and the bulk may enable an effective gapping of the Weyl nodes in the bulk due to the proximity effect. Simple ion irradiation may thus serve as a powerful tool to fabricating topological quantum devices from mono-arsenides, even on an industrial scale.

Simple cubic (SC) phase has been long experimentally determined as the high-pressure phase III of elemental calcium (Ca) since 1984. However, recent density functional calculations within semi-local approximation showed that this SC phase is structur ally unstable by exhibiting severely imaginary phonons, and is energetically unstable with respect to a theoretical body-centered tetragonal I41/amd structure over the pressure range of phase III. These calculations generated extensive debates on the validity of SC phase. Here we have re-examined the SC structure by performing more precise density functional calculations within hybrid functionals of Heyd-Scuseria-Erhzerhof (HSE) and PBE0. Our calculations were able to rationalize fundamentally the phase stability of SC structure over all other known phases by evidence of its actual energetic stability above 33 GPa and its intrinsically dynamical stability without showing any imaginary phonons in the entire pressure range studied. We further established that the long-thought theoretical I41/amd structure remains stable in a narrow pressure range before entering SC phase and is actually the structure of experimental Ca-III synthesized recently at low temperature 14 K as supported by the excellent agreement between our simulated X-ray diffraction patterns and the experimental data. Our results shed strong light on the crucial role played by the precise electron exchange energy in a proper description of the potential energy of Ca.
Inelastic neutron scattering and neutron powder diffraction experiments were carried out to investigate a localized mode, proposed from various bulk measurements, in the beta-pyrochlore AOs2O6 (A=K, Rb, Cs). The localized mode was identified in all t he three compounds as well as another beta-pyrochlore CsW2O6. The anharmonicity of the mode is weak in RbOs2O6 and CsOs2O6 but substantial in KOs2O6.
