The charge response in the spin chain/ladder compound Sr_14-xCa_xCu_24O_41 is characterized by DC resistivity, low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy and optical spectroscopy. We identify a phase transition below which a charge-density wave (CDW) develops in the ladder arrays. Calcium doping suppresses this phase with the transition temperature decreasing from 210 K for x=0 to 10 K for x=9, and the CDW gap from 130 meV down to 3 meV, respectively. This suppression is due to the worsened nesting originating from the increase of the inter-ladder tight-binding hopping integrals, as well as from disorder introduced at the Sr sites. These results altogether speak in favor of two-dimensional superconductivity under pressure.

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations feature prominently in the phase diagram of the cuprates, motivating competing theories of whether fluctuating CDW correlations aid superconductivity or whether static CDW order coexists with superconductivity i n inhomogeneous or spatially modulated states. Here we report Cu $L$-edge resonant x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements of CDW correlations in superconducting La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ $x=0.11$. Static CDW order is shown to exist in the superconducting state at low temperatures and to persist up to at least 85% of the CDW transition temperature. We discuss the implications of our observations for how emph{nominally} competing order parameters can coexist in the cuprates.
We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on the charge density wave observed in underdoped cuprates. We studied YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c$=61 K) using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and reveal an extreme sensitivity of the phonon anomalies related to the charge density wave (CDW) order to HP. The amplitudes of the normal state broadening and superconductivity induced phonon softening at Q$_{CDW}$ rapidly decrease as HP is applied, resulting in the complete suppression of signatures of the CDW below $sim$1 GPa. Additional IXS measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ demonstrate that this very rapid effect cannot be explained by pressure-induced modification of the doping level and highlight the different role of external pressure and doping in tuning the phase diagram of the cuprates. Our results provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the CDW formation and its interplay with superconductivity.

The unconventional normal-state properties of the cuprates are often discussed in terms of emergent electronic order that onsets below a putative critical doping of xc = 0.19. Charge-density wave (CDW) correlations represent one such order; however, experimental evidence for such order generally spans a limited range of doping that falls short of the critical value xc, leading to questions regarding its essential relevance. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to demonstrate that CDW correlations in La2-xSrxCuO4 persist up to a doping of at least x = 0.21. The correlations show strong changes through the superconducting transition, but no obvious discontinuity through xc = 0.19, despite changes in Fermi surface topology and electronic transport at this doping. These results demonstrate the interaction between CDWs and superconductivity even in overdoped cuprates and prompt a reconsideration of the role of CDW correlations in the high-temperature cuprate phase diagram.
Here we report a systematic investigation on the evolution of the structural and physical properties, including the charge density wave and superconductivity of the polycrystalline CuIr2Te4-xIx. X-ray diffraction results indicate that both of a and c lattice parameters increase linearly. The resistivity measurements indicate that the charge density wave is destabilized with slight x but reappears when x is large than 0.9. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature enhances as x raises and reaches a maximum value of around 2.95 K for the optimal composition CuIr2Te3.9I0.1 followed by a slight decrease with higher iodine doping content. The specific heat jump for the optimal composition CuIr2Te3.9I0.1 is approximately 1.46, which is close to the Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer value which is 1.43, indicating it is a bulk superconductor. The results of thermodynamic heat capacity measurements under different magnetic fields, magnetization and magneto-transport measurements further suggest that CuIr2Te4-xIx bulks are type II superconductors. Finally, an electronic phase diagram for this CuIr2Te4-xIx system has been constructed. The present study provides a suitable material platform for further investigation of the interplay of the CDW and superconductivity.
The discovery of charge-density wave (CDW)-related effects in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of cuprates holds the tantalizing promise of clarifying the interactions that stabilize the electronic order. Here, we report a compr ehensive RIXS study of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) finding that CDW effects persist up to a remarkably high doping level of x = 0.21 before disappearing at x = 0.25. The inelastic excitation spectra remain essentially unchanged with doping despite crossing a topological transition in the Fermi surface. This indicates that the spectra contain little or no direct coupling to electronic excitations near the Fermi surface, rather they are dominated by the resonant cross-section for phonons and CDW-induced phonon-softening. We interpret our results in terms of a CDW that is generated by strong correlations and a phonon response that is driven by the CDW-induced modification of the lattice.
