The Raman shifts of nanocrystalline GaSb excited by an Ar+ ion laser of wavelengths 514.5, 496.5, 488.0, 476.5, and 457.9 nm are studied by experiment and explained by phonon confinement, tensile stress, resonance Raman scattering and quantum size effects. The Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman spectra of GaSb nanocrystals strongly support the Raman feature of GaSb nanocrystals. Calculated optical spectra compare well with experimental data on Raman scattering GaSb nanocrystals.

We present spatially resolved Raman images of the G and 2D lines of single-layer graphene flakes. The spatial fluctuations of G and 2D lines are correlated and are thus shown to be affiliated with local doping domains. We investigate the position of the 2D line -- the most significant Raman peak to identify single-layer graphene -- as a function of charging up to |n|~4 10^12 cm^-2. Contrary to the G line which exhibits a strong and symmetric stiffening with respect to electron and hole-doping, the 2D line shows a weak and slightly asymmetric stiffening for low doping. Additionally, the line width of the 2D line is, in contrast to the G line, doping-independent making this quantity a reliable measure for identifying single-layer graphene.
Resonance Raman (RR) peaks of and stretching modes and their higher harmonics have been observed superimposed on photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of thin films. Commercial fluorine doped thin films deposited by sputtering on glass and thin films depos ited on Si by laser ablation have been studied. The dispersions of CO and OH stretching RR modes are ~ 600 cm-1/eV and 800 cm-1 respectively. The dispersion of the third harmonic of CO stretching mode is ~ 2000 cm-1/eV. Similar dispersion of RR peak of stretching modes and higher harmonics superimposed on PL spectra has been observed in Mo1-xFexO2 thin films and SiO2 bulk glass. Large dispersion of RR peaks seems to be a common property of oxides with impurities of and .
We studied metastable $alpha$-FeGe$_2$, a novel layered tetragonal material, embedded as a spacer layer in spin valve structures with ferromagnetic Fe$_3$Si and Co$_2$FeSi electrodes. For both types of electrodes, spin valve operation is demonstrated with a metallic transport behavior of the $alpha$-FeGe$_2$ spacer layer. The spin valve signals are found to increase both with temperature and spacer thickness, which is discussed in terms of a decreasing magnetic coupling strength between the ferromagnetic bottom and top electrodes. The temperature-dependent resistances of the spin valve structures exhibit characteristic features, which are explained by ferromagnetic phase transitions between 55 and 110~K. The metallic transport characteristics as well as the low-temperature ferromagnetism are found to be consistent with the results of first-principles calculations.
X-ray diffraction experiments were performed on MnO confined in mesoporous silica SBA-15 and MCM-41 matrices with different channel diameters. The measured patterns were analyzed by profile analysis and compared to numerical simulations of the diffra ction from confined nanoparticles. From the lineshape and the specific shift of the diffraction reflections it was shown that the embedded objects form ribbon-like structures in the SBA-15 matrices with channels diameters of 47-87 {AA}, and nanowire-like structures in the MCM-41 matrices with channels diameters of 24-35 {AA}. In the latter case the confined nanoparticles appear to be narrower than the channel diameters. The physical reasons for the two different shapes of the confined nanoparticles are discussed.
Raman forbidden modes and surface defect related Raman features in SnO_2 nanostructures carry information about disorder and surface defects which strongly influence important technological applications like catalysis and sensing. Due to the weak int ensities of these peaks, it is difficult to identify these features by using conventional Raman spectroscopy. Tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) studies conducted on SnO_2 nanoparticles (NPs) of size 4 and 25 nm have offered significant insights of prevalent defects and disorders. Along with one order enhancement in symmetry allowed Raman modes, new peaks related to disorder and surface defects of SnO_2 NPs were found with significant intensity. Temperature dependent Raman studies were also carried out for these NPs and correlated with the TERS spectra. For quasi-quantum dot sized 4 nm NPs, the TERS study was found to be the best technique to probe the finite size related Raman forbidden modes.
