We studied the influence of sample preparation and defects in the superconducting properties samples using atomic ratios of Mg:B=1:1 and Mg:B=1:2. Samples were characterized by SEM, and XRD, and the magnetization properties were examined in a SQUID magnetometer. The presence of Mg vacancies was determined by Rietveld analysis. Most of the samples exhibited sharp superconducting transitions with Tcs between 37- 39 K. We found a strong correlation between the crystal strain and the Tc. This strain was related to the presence of Mg vacancies. In addition, results showed that some samples degraded with time when exposed to ambient conditions. In these samples the Tc did not change with time, but the superconducting transition became broader and the Meissner fraction decreased. This effect was only present in samples with poor connectivity between grains and smaller grain sizes. The degradation was related to a surface decomposition as observed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. No correlation was found between this effect and the presence of Mg vacancies.

We report a novel synthesis for near monodisperse, sub-10-nm Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. At first, a new reduction route to bismuth nanoparticles is described which are applied as starting materials in the formation of rhombohedral Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. Af ter ligand removal by a novel hydrazine hydrate etching procedure, the nanoparticle powder is spark plasma sintered to a pellet with preserved crystal grain sizes. Unlike previous works on the properties of Bi2Te3 nanoparticles, the full thermoelectric characterization of such sintered pellets shows a highly reduced thermal conductivity and the same electric conductivity as bulk n-type Bi2Te3.
The recent reports of superconductivity in Nd1-xSrxNiO2/SrTiO3 heterostructures have reinvigorated interest in potential superconductivity of low-valence nickelates. Synthesis of Ni1+-containing compounds is notoriously difficult. In the current work , a combined sol-gel combustion and high-pressure annealing technique was employed to prepare polycrystalline perovskite Nd1-xSrxNiO3 (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.2). Metal nitrates and metal acetates were used as starting materials, and the latter were found to be superior to the former in terms of safety and reactivity. The Nd1-xSrxNiO3 compounds were subsequently reduced to Nd1 xSrxNiO2 using calcium hydride in a sealed, evacuated quartz tube. To understand the synthesis pathway, the evolution from NdNiO3 to NdNiO2 was monitored using in-situ synchrotron X ray diffraction during the reduction process. Electrical transport properties were consistent with an insulator-metal transition occurring between x = 0 and 0.1 for Nd1-xSrxNiO3. Superconductivity was not observed in our bulk samples of Nd1-xSrxNiO2. Neutron diffraction experiments at 3 K and 300 K were performed on Nd0.9Sr0.1NiO2, in which no magnetic Bragg reflections were observed, and the results of structural Rietveld refinement are provided.
Heusler compounds form a numerous class of intermetallics, which include two families of compositions ABC and AB2C, usually referred to as half- and full-Heusler compounds, respectively. Given their tunable electronic properties, made possible by adj usting the chemical composition, these materials are currently considered for the possible use in sustainable technologies such as solar energy and thermoelectric conversion. According to theoretical predictions, Sb substitution in the TiFe2Sn full-Heusler compound is thought to yield band structure modifications that should enhance the thermoelectric power factor. In this work we tested the phase stability and the structural and microstructural properties of such heavily-doped compounds. We synthesized polycrystalline TiFe2Sn1-xSbx samples (x=0,0.1,0.2 and 1.0) by arc melting, followed annealing. The structural characterization, performed by x-ray powder diffraction and microscopy analyses, confirmed the formation of the Heusler AB2C structure (cF16, Fm-3m, prototype: MnCu2Al) in all samples, with only few percent amounts of secondary phases and only slight deviations from nominal stoichiometry. With increasing Sb substitution we found a steady decrease of the lattice parameter, confirming that the replacement takes place at the Sn site. Quite unusually, the as cast samples exhibited a higher lattice contraction than the annealed ones. The fully substituted x=1.0 compound, again adopting the MnCu2Al structure, does not form as stoichiometric phase and turned out to be strongly Fe deficient. The physical behavior at room temperature indicated that annealing with increasing temperature is beneficial for electrical and thermoelectrical transport. Moreover, we measured a slight improvement of electrical and thermoelectrical properties in the x=0.1 sample and a suppression in the x=0.2 sample, as compared to the undoped x=0 sample.
Powder Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ ($0.70leq xleq 0.84$) samples were synthesized and characterized carefully by X-ray diffraction analysis, inductive-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and redox titration. It was proved that $gamma$-Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2} $ is formed only in the narrow range of $0.70leq xleq 0.78$. Nevertheless, the magnetic properties depend strongly on $x$. We found, for the first time, two characteristic features in the magnetic susceptibility of Na$_{0.78}$CoO$_{2}$, a sharp peak at $T_{p}=16$ K and an anomaly at $T_{k}=9$ K, as well as the transition at $T_{c}=22$ K and the broad maximum at $T_{m}=50$ K which had already been reported. A type of weak ferromagnetic transition seems to occur at $T_{k}$. The transition at $T_{c}$, which is believed to be caused by spin density wave formation, was observed clearly for $xgeq 0.74$ with constant $T_{c}$ and $T_{p}$ independent of $x$. On the other hand, ferromagnetic moment varies systematically depending on $x$. These facts suggest the occurrence of a phase separation at the microscopic level, such as the separation into Na-rich and Na-poor domains due to the segregation of Na ions. The magnetic phase diagram and transition mechanism proposed previously should be reconsidered.
Stable polyyne chains terminated with biphenyl end groups (a,u-biphenylpolyynes) were synthesized in a single step through a simple procedure by using the Cadiot-Chodkiewicz reaction conditions. The a,ubiphenylpolyynes were separated through HPLC ana lysis and identified by means of their electronic absorption spectra. The a,u-biphenylpolyynes were studied by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy and the spectral interpretation was supported with DFT calculations. A peculiarly low reactivity of a,u-biphenylpolyynes with ozone was observed.
