Experiments of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) were performed on Co$% ^{2+}$ substituting Zn$^{2+}$ or Mg$^{2+}$ in powder samples of Zn$_2$(OH)PO$_4$ and Mg$_2$(OH)AsO$_4$. The observed resonances are described with a theoretical model that considers the departures from the two perfect structures. It is shown that the resonance in the penta-coordinated complex is allowed, and the crystal fields that would describe the resonance of the Co$^{2+}$ in the two environments are calculated. The small intensity of the resonance in the penta-coordinated complex is explained assuming that this site is much less populated than the octahedral one; this assumption was verified by a molecular calculation of the energies of the two environments, with both Co and Zn as central ions in Zn$_2$(OH)PO$_4$.

We study the effect of Zn alloying on the hydrogen desorption properties of Mg(BH$_4$)$_2$ using $it{ab initio}$ simulations. In particular, we investigate formation/reaction enthalpies/entropies for a number of compounds and reactions at a wide rang e of temperatures and Zn concentrations in Mg$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$(BH$_4$)$_2$. Our results show that the thermodynamic stability of the resulting material can be significantly lowered through Zn alloying. We find that e.g. the solid solution Mg$_{2/3}$Zn$_{1/3}$(BH$_4$)$_2$ has a reaction enthalpy for the complete hydrogen desorption of only 25.3 kJ/mol H$_2$$-$a lowering of 15 kJ/mol H$_2$ compared to the pure phase and a corresponding lowering in critical temperature of 123 K. In addition, we find that the enthalpy of mixing is rather small and show that the decrease in reaction enthalpy with Zn concentration is approximately linear.
Macroscopic magnetic properties and microscopic magnetic structure of Rb$_2$Mn$_3$(MoO$_4$)$_3$(OH)$_2$ (space group $Pnma$) are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The compounds crystal s tructure contains bond-alternating [Mn$_3$O$_{11}$]$^{infty}$ chains along the $b$-axis, formed by isosceles triangles of Mn ions occupying two crystallographically nonequivalent sites (Mn1 site on the base and Mn2 site on the vertex). These chains are only weakly linked to each other by nonmagnetic oxyanions. Both SQUID magnetometry and neutron diffraction experiments show two successive magnetic transitions as a function of temperature. On cooling, it transitions from a paramagnetic phase into an incommensurate phase below 4.5~K with a magnetic wavevector near ${bf k}_{1} = (0,~0.46,~0)$. An additional commensurate antiferromagnetically ordered component arises with ${bf k}_{2} = (0,~0,~0)$, forming a complex magnetic structure below 3.5~K with two different propagation vectors of different stars. On further cooling, the incommensurate wavevector undergoes a lock-in transition below 2.3~K. The experimental results suggest that the magnetic superspace group is $Pnma.1(0b0)s0ss$ for the single-${bf k}$ incommensurate phase and is $Pnma(0b0)00s$ for the 2-${bf k}$ magnetic phase. We propose a simplified magnetic structure model taking into account the major ordered contributions, where the commensurate ${bf k}_{2}$ defines the ordering of the $c$-axis component of Mn1 magnetic moment, while the incommensurate ${bf k}_{1}$ describes the ordering of the $ab$-plane components of both Mn1 and Mn2 moments into elliptical cycloids
The magnetic properties of the cobaltite {BCAO}, a good realization of the quasi two-dimensional frustrated honeycomb-lattice system with strong planar anisotropy, have been reinvestigated by means of spherical neutron polarimetry with CRYOPAD. From accurate measurements of polarization matrices both on elastic and inelastic contributions as a function of the scattering vector {bf{Q}}, we have been able to determine the low-temperature magnetic structure of {BCAO} and reveal its puzzling in-plane spin dynamics. Surprisingly, the ground-state structure (described by an incommensurate propagation vector ${bf{k}}_{1}=(k_{x}, 0, k_{z}$), with $k_{x}=0.270{pm}0.005$ and $k_{z} approx -1.31$) appears to be a quasi-collinear structure, and not a simple helix, as previously determined. In addition, our results have revealed the existence of a non-negligible out-of-plane moment component $ approx 0.25{mu}_{B}$/Co$^{2+}$, representing about 10% of the in-plane component, as demonstrated by the presence of finite off-diagonal elements $P_{yz}$ and $P_{zy}$ of the polarization matrix, both on elastic and inelastic magnetic contributions. Despite a clear evidence of the existence of a slightly inelastic contribution of structural origin superimposed to the magnetic excitations at the scattering vectors ${bf{Q}}=(0.27, 0, 3.1)$ and ${bf{Q}}=(0.73, 0, 0.8)$ (energy transfer ${Delta}E approx 2.3$ meV), no strong inelastic nuclear-magnetic interference terms could be detected so far, meaning that the nuclear and magnetic degrees of freedom have very weak cross-correlations. The strong inelastic $P_{yz}$ and $P_{zy}$ matrix elements can be understood by assuming that the magnetic excitations in {BCAO} are spin waves associated with trivial anisotropic precessions of the magnetic moments involved in the canted incommensurate structure.
We present the magnetic properties of complete solid solutions of ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ and CoCr$_2$O$_4$: two well-studied oxide spinels with very different magnetic ground states. ZnCr$_2$O$_4$, with non-magnetic $d^{10}$ cations occupying the A site and m agnetic $d^3$ cations on the B site, is a highly frustrated antiferromagnet. CoCr$_2$O$_4$, with magnetic $d^7$ cations (three unpaired electrons) on the A site as well, exhibits both Neel ferrimagnetism as well as commensurate and incommensurate non-collinear magnetic order. More recently, CoCr$_2$O$_4$ has been studied extensively for its polar behavior which arises from conical magnetic ordering. Gradually introducing magnetism on the A site of ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ results in a transition from frustrated antiferromagnetism to glassy magnetism at low concentrations of Co, and eventually to ferrimagnetic and conical ground states at higher concentrations. Real-space Monte-Carlo simulations of the magnetic susceptibility suggest that the first magnetic ordering transition and features of the susceptibility across $x$ are captured by near-neighbor self- and cross-couplings between the magnetic A and B atoms. We present as a part of this study, a method for displaying the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility in a manner which helps distinguish between compounds possessing purely antiferromagnetic interactions from compounds where other kinds of ordering are present.
We report pressure-dependent reflection and transmission measurements on ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and CdCr$_2$O$_4$ single crystals at room temperature over a broad spectral range 200-24000 cm$^{-1}$. The pressure dependence of the phonon modes and the high-frequency electronic excitations indicates that all three compounds undergo a pressure-induced structural phase transition with the critical pressure 15 GPa, 12 GPa, and 10 GPa for CdCr$_2$O$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, respectively. The eigenfrequencies of the electronic transitions are very close to the expected values for chromium crystal-field transitions. In the case of the chalcogenides pressure induces a red shift of the electronic excitation which indicates a strong hybridization of the Cr d-bands with the chalcogenide bands.
